Hello Moms,
I have a 19mo and have not yet taken him to the Dentist. According to
PARENTS MAGAZINE they say to start taking the child when they reach 1yo.
How young is too young, and also..What age was your child when you first took
him/her to the dentist?

What can I do next?

I didn't take my first son until he was 4. I put it off because I knew it was going to be a terrible experience. And on his first appointment the dentist said there was tooth that looked like it was getting a cavity. I just took my second son for his first visit the other day, he's 9 months old and has had 8 teeth since he's been 6 months. The dentist found plaque on his teeth already. I was shocked. I would take your son as soon as you can. I can't hurt anything and can only help. Most dental insurances cover pediatric dentistry. We go to Jared Welch on Val Vista and Pecos.

Ugh, I think PARENTS magazine give the absolute WORST advice, so check some other legitimate sources. I started taking mine at age 3.

I just too my 3 yr old to a fantastic dentist Seville Family Dentistry on Chandler Heights and Higley. Dr. Joy or Howie Brauer. My daughter wants to see "her dentist" all the time now. Very helpful and great with kids.

I have been taking both of my children (ages 10 & 3) to Dr. Johnson at the East Valley Pediatric Dentistry. I can say nothing but good things about the staff and Dr. Johnson. They are located on Higley and the 202. My 3 year old has been going there since he was 1 1/2. Here is the website for you to look at. Good luck!

I just had my son at the doctor today for his 18month check and I asked him this very question. He said that unless you notice something unusual in their mouth, they do not need to see a dentist until 3 years old.

Hey L.! I took my daughter to a dentist when she was 2 1/2, she cried the first 2 times, but after that she did great!! The first visit they pretty much just brush their teeth! I plan on taking my son to my daughters next appoint he will almost be 2 1/2. We go to a great ped. dentist at the 202 and Higley if you are interested in the # let me know :)

I have two boys 6 & 2 1/2. My 2 1/2 year old has gone to the dentist twice so far, so he has tagged along with big brother since he was 1 1/2. I actually make an appt. for each of them, but the dentist only does a visual check on my little one. He counts teeth, checks spacing, looks at cleanliness etc. He will start cleaning his teeth when he sees that they need cleaning and feels that he will hold still and open wide. That may be in another 6 mo. or in another year, so you don't have anything to worry about now. They won't do x-rays until needed so as not to expose them to the radiation. We go to John Culp in Ahwatukee of Jungle Roots Children's Dentistry ###-###-####. I know there are pediatric dentists closer, but he was recommended in Phoenix magazine's best doctors issue and my cousin's dentist in Havasu told them to fly down here to see him when their son had a tooth accident.

Hmmm. Just saw that someone said their pediatrician said wait until 3. My daughter just had her 2 year check up yesterday, and her pediatrician told me we should have started going around 1 (we haven't gone yet, but I am hoping to find a pediatric dentist soon just to get her checked out). My guess is that there are lots of opinions out there about this. Do what your gut is telling you to!
p.s. I LOVE Parents mag. I saw that one mom doesn't like it, but I think it's great.
