Paint Color - Woodinville,WA

Hello Everyone,

I am interested in people paint color choices. I have a large kitchen with maple cabinets, black speckeled granite and a warm natural stone backsplash. The room is North facing, but has large windows so there is plenty of light.

I stink at picking a color - I can't afford to hire a color person and hoping that you all can give me some good choices that I can pick from. I like warm tones, but open to others. Right now there are patches of yellow up, that I think may be too bright.

We will most likely be buying the paint from the main paint store in Woodinville - Mallory Paint which sells Benjamin Moore paint.

Thank you for your time.
M.

Hi M.,

I stink at picking colors too. Here's where I went (per my paint shop): www.voiceofcolor.com. If you go to this website, there's a couple of links--the color sense game (tells you what colors match your personality) and their is the visions of glance (it will show you whatever room you are thinking of painting) and you can actually pick out different colors and see what they will look like on the wall. I did this for both my bedroom and kitchen--and it worked out very well. I saw what it would look like, wrote down the color, and bought the paint.

Hope this helps,

M.

The Benjamin Moore site has a personal color viewer where you can select a room and paint color, and it will give you a visual of what the room will look like. It's pretty cool. You can use a stock photo or upload one of your own.

If I were you, I would select something warm, but clean looking. I think kitchens look great in green or yellow (sage or squash). Also make sure that your kitchen color works with color of the rooms that adjoin it.

When you are ready to put something on the wall, get a small amount - benjamin moore makes small sample size containers or get a quart. Paint a 2x2 section of a wall to get a good idea of what the color will look like. It's amazing to see the difference between what the paint chip looks like versus what you put on your wall.

M.,
I love to paint. My mom and grandmother both painted. I learned to paint and wallpaper (Yes, Wallpaper, in small doses, is making a comeback.) from them. I paint and repaint my house. I am no professional, my husband would tell you I watch a lot of HGTV. I do love color but don't know anything about it. The best advice I've heard about color, specifically kitchen color , is to think about food and what you like to cook. If you love making your own homemade sauce, think red. If you love to bake bread, a golden hue. I personally love deep veggie colors, red peppers, eggplant, asparagus. I chose a color called Artichoke.
I also tend to like earthy and rich colors. My living room is a dark squash color. Think about what you are doing in the kitchen that you love to do and choose a color that would mirror that. If you don't cook think about how a certain color would make you feel while you are in that space. It's not about picking a color you think looks good in a space it's about how that color makes you feel within the space. Just remember it's only paint and if you don't like what you choose change it, it is only paint. Paint just a square and live with it for a while. Then paint it or try another.

I painted my kitchen with a cream color and then sponged over it with a pale beige color. I also added accents with bumble bees and lavender
If your cabinets are a natural maple then pick something with more color, mine are a cherry maple. So they are sort of redish in tone.
Go pick a kitchen towel that is printed from a local store and pick a color from there. Most places can color match these days.

I just painted my kitchen Raffia Ribbon by Behr and I love it! It's a warm mustardy gold color leaning more to the brown than yellow.

Hi M.,

I have green and black counter tops with oak colored cabinets.....I painted it a light pastel yellow. I agree a light gold color might be good......or a beige.....you might be able to do a Carmel color......go get some paint strips from the hardware store, bring them home, then put them next to the cabinet, the floor, the wood, etc....and see how it looks in each place. That usually helps me.

My kitchen, which has granite countertops--beige-y with black speckles--and a stone backsplash, is Pismo Dunes (taupe) by Benjamin Moore. It's a great neutral color! I like it because with a neutral wall color, I can change out accents--kitchen towels & such.
Good luck!
