Here is what you do. You go to your gyn and ask for a sonogram. IF you had a cyst burst (which is horribly painful and takes a while to stop hurting because all of that fluid that comes out of the cyst is VERY irritating to your pelvic cavity), then the cyst won't be there anymore. If you wonder why it's important to know that, once you have a bursting cyst, it is kind of normal to get another one. And that means going through an AWFUL pain again. (I know this because it happened to me twice.)
If you STILL have an ovarian cyst and it has NOT burst, that's actually worse. These cysts get big and have to be removed. Mine was 7 cms by the time the doctor went in to get it. He told me that most of the time he couldn't save the ovary because of so much bleeding, but he was able to save mine. I had already had my children, so perhaps it didn't matter.
Your ER doctor was a jerk for not doing the sonogram right there and then. If he had, he could have seen the fluid in your pelvic floor and he would have been able to give you a definitive diagnosis. He lost the opportunity, which is a shame. Still, you need to know, so get to the gyn and get a sonogram.
I ended up having to take Mircette birth control pills to prevent the bursting cysts. Not all birth control pills prevent bursting cysts, so it's important to know which ones do.
Just to let you know, having your tubes tied won't prevent the cysts. Only taking out the ovaries would do that.
Good luck - I remember how awful that was and I hate you're going through it.
