Hi L.,
I have an 8 month old and we started out with Dr. Dickey as her ped. She came to me highly recommended by several people I used to work with. Overall, there are many great things about her and the office in general:
1) Dr. Dickey also has a PHD in child psychology so she is able to give good advice with behavioral issues.
2) The office is well staffed- I never had a problem getting in to see the Dr. or a nurse practitioner if I needed to, including Saturdays.
3) They have two office locations (Irving and Grapevine)
However, there were several issues that ultimately led me to make a change to a new pediatrician:
1) Dr. Dickey told me my daughter's head would require a helmet band to correct slight dissymetry on her face. She was adamant that the treatment was necessary. I sought a 2nd opinion from 2 other ped's and both disagreed. We took my baby to a craniofacial specialist who also agreed the treatment was not necessary and it would correct itself (which it's done) as she gets older. When I asked Dr. Dickey if the treatment was necessary she told me that while most people wouldn't even notice, she looked at my baby and it was enough of a problem to "bug her". It left me feeling really bad and we spent 2 months worrying about this condition before we had the appt. with the specialist only to find out that it wasn't so severe.
2) From the very beginning my baby has been at the top of the percentiles for both height and weight. At our 6 month appt. Dr. Dickey advised me to restrict her diet heavily. We hadn't even started solid foods yet and she told me not to give her rice cereal, bananas, crackers, bread, etc - basically anything starchy. I was once again made to feel really bad during the appt. and sought another opinion from one of the ped's I saw earlier. The 2nd Dr. totally disagreed with the advice to restrict her diet and told us it was important for her to have those foods at this age.
3) Dr. Dickey is adamant about making church-going a strong priority within the family. At each office visit she will ask you if you go to church. At the 4 month appt. she inquired what church we attended, how often, who the pastor was, etc. What she didn't bother to ask me was how well my baby was sleeping at night, how much she was eating, etc. which to me was the essential basics I assumed would be asked.
4) As a first time mom, I always have questions for the Dr. at each visit. I always left the appt. feeling like Dr. Dickey was so nonchalant with my questions like they weren't a big deal. This may just me being sensitive, and her way of trying to alleviate my fears about things that really aren't serious but I always felt like she just breezed over my questions.
Last month I made the decision that for me it just wasn't a fit and I opted to change pediatricians and it was amazing how much better I felt after the first visit with the new doctor (one of the ones I saw for the 2nd opinions earlier). For me it was the right move, however like I said I know several people who really love Dr. Dickey and her office.
I hope it helps. Feel free to contact me personally if you need to.
