I used 1800contacts for several years because they were much cheaper than going through the Dr. Now I buy them at CostCo and I save a ton more.
Has anyone ever used the on-line discount contact len providers such as 1800contactlens.com, etc? If so, what did you think? Is it a lot cheaper than getting them at Walmart, Target or other optical stores? Are they the same quality as the retail stores and is it convenient?

I just bought my contact lenses about 3 weeks ago. As a matter of fact I had my prescription and was going to order from the exact website you are thinking about. The lenses there were $69.99 per box and I priced Wal-Mart and got them for $43 a box. So I saved a ton of money. I will never go to that website again after that price jump. Also I went to a website and put in the company of lenses my doc prescribed and printed out a coupon with my name on it for a free trial pair in my prescription. So there is another pair of free contacts. Good luck!
I've used 1800contactlense with no problems at all. I wish I had used them the last time I ordered. I was in a rush and was afraid that they wouldn't get mailed to me in time, so I used walmart.com and picked them up at the store. NEVER AGAIN. No one knew what was going on. I got an e-mail saying my contacts were at the store. They didn't have them and had no way to check the order to find out anything about it. When I called customer service, they didn't know where they were. We were about to leave to go out of the country and should have had 5 days leeway, instead I picked them up the night before I left and even then had to stop by the store and ask if they were there. They hadn't even thought about calling me to tell me they were in. NEVER AGAIN.
The contacts you get through 1800contacts are the same as you would get anywhere else, so it's not a different quality or anything like that. I will definantly use them in the future.
I have been using ACLens.com for a few years. I shopped around and found them to be cheaper than even Costco. I get the contacts within a few days.
I use either Coastalcontacts.com or Visiondirect.com for my contacts. Both are cheaper than Walmart or any other place I've used. 1800contacts tends to me a little more expensive. Coastalcontacts is my favorite though because I can order them and have them shipped and you don't have to pay anything up front if you choose not to. You have to pay by 15 days after the "shipped on" date.
I've ordered my contacts from 1800contact.com for 4 years now. They were a lot less expensive than going through my Doctor. Yes, they do call my eye doctor to verify my prescription, so they are legit. They are delivered right to your door, which is great--I used to have to make another trip to the Doctor's office which was a pain, especially with 2 kids in car seats!
Good luck!
Well, I have never purchased contacts online.. but this does run along the lines of saving money on contacts. I used to use the "name" brand contacts and those are a pretty penny. I told my doctor I needed something more affordable and he wrote for an "off" brand, not a brand that advertises or anything. Well, they work just fine and I love them! I have been using an off brand for 5+ years now with no problem and they are 1/2 the price of the name brand (I do use Sams too).
So if anyone has been leary to switch to a different brand, it never hurts to try! It saved me hundreds over the years.
I worked in the optics industry before my oldest, now six was born. It has been a while and the rules could have changed, but then these places were illegal in the state of Texas, California and Florida. They are only worried about the bottom dollar. I saw many cases where they never called to verify with our Dr and many more cases when they did call, the dr would not release the prescription because it had expired and they would fill the order anyway. If you are ordering from these places, you still need an eye exam at least once a year. Your eyes can and do change and getting a bad fit for contacts could ruin your eyes for a very long time. Not only does your perscription change, but the actual shape of your eyeball can change as well. Think of wearing a shoe that was too small or two big you can get ulcers rubbed on your eyes causing you to be out of contacts for months and sometimes forever.
Now saying that, if you see your optometrist on a regular basis, I think you are fairly safe.
I've been getting my contacts online for quite a few years now. I've never had any problems. They are the exact same contacts you get in the store. You have to have a prescription (you provide the dr. info and they verify it).
Different brands have different prices, and some online places will give different discounts so check around. You might do a search for contact stores, then look up your brand at each place. You'll find a better deal if you comparison shop! And it may be at a place you haven't heard of too! The place that sells my brand the cheapest is www.clecontactlenses.com
Good luck!!
I get my contacts from Walmart and have never had a problem. They are much cheaper than 1800contacts and I get them within 5 business days. After reading these posts, I may try Sams instead, but my contacts are pretty cheap anyway. :-)

Yes, I second that response. Sams and Costco are most definitely cheaper than Wal-Mart and Target.
I've used them and had a great experience. Yes, same exact contacts I get from my dr. My dr. is actually out of town (I haven't gone to one since we moved here), so it's a pretty big hassle ordering contacts from him. This was much easier and a little cheaper. Plus, I get more at a time from 1800contacts. I've never gotten contacts from Walmart or Target, so I can't compare the prices there. The only thing you need for 1800contacts is your prescription from your eye dr....they say that they will call them to make sure it is accurate (not sure if they actually do, but you have to give the name, etc. of your dr.) hope that helps!
I just did this research last week. Costco did not carry my brand so I had to order on-line. 1-800-CONTACTS was one of the most expensive, by far. I finally ended up ordering from expresscontacts.com.
Good luck
They are the same quality. I never had problems with 1800contacts, but now I found Sams to be the cheapest.
I just made a purchase from shipmycontacts.com. They are located here in TX, so I got them very fast (helped that they upgraded my shipping with no charge.) 1800contacts tends to be very expensive, in my opinion. There are also rebates available for most brands, so make sure to check that out, too.
I use Vision Direct (www.visiondirect.com). I've never had any trouble with them and they're definitely a much better price than my eye dr. I haven't compared them to Wal-mart but it's very convenient.
