North Hills Hospital Vs. Baylor

I'm somewhat new to the Ft Worth Area and I have picked out an OB that is affiliated only with North Hills Hospital. Baylor would be a geographically better location for us, but my question is have any of you had recent good/bad experiences with either hospital?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies for sharing your experiences with me. I feel more comfortable with the idea of going to North Hills Hospital and have kept my appointment with the OB that I've selected. I will be touring the hospital as soon as time permits just to be certain, but I'm sure I'll like it.

Hi M.,

I don't really have any experience with North Hills hospital but I absolutely love Baylor Grapevine. My obgyn is Michael White and he is so wonderful. I delivered my first daughter there and had such a good experience. I'm due with my second baby in May and plan on delivering at Baylor Grapevine again.

I wouldn't recommend Baylor to anyone; I have had several bad experiences with Baylor. None were to do with childbirth but I was very disappointed with there quality of care, and they had very poor communication and horrible follow up with the patients.

I just had baby #2 at North Hills, and I could not have been happier. Both trips there were great. With my second we had to go back in the hospital when she was a week old due to Jaundice issues and they were wonderful, we were there overnight and although I was not there patient, they took care of both of us. The nurses and other staff there are great. Good luck with #3.

We had a terrible experience at Baylor with our son (who was not born there). It was not a child birth experience, but an emergency room experience, but was awful.

Good luck to you! :)

Please note that this is not firsthand information but rather information I have heard from our pediatrician (who chose not to use North Hills) and others in the medical field over the past many years.

My understanding is that North Hills has staph infection in the facility and it is very difficult to get that eradicated. I would therefore not want to go there.

Additional note: I received a message back from Jonathon who works at NHH and told me that I was in error on thinking they have any different staph than any other hospital. I hope he is correct. It sounds from many posts like this is a great place to deliver a baby.

I had a baby at North Hills October 29, 2006 and I loved it...I was literally the only Mommy and baby on the labor and delivery floor for two days...crazy,but awesome, cause I got so much attention...they were awesome!!!! It's a little further but I do belive that they may have already started constructing the new labor and delivery unit which is a multi-million dollar project...its going to be beautiful...I had Dr. Alcalen and she also has a office in Keller...for after baby check ups too!!! BTW...I was going to Baylor but I was on Medicaid and they kicked me out b/c off that when I was 31 weeks along and NHH was the only hospital to take me in...they are a diamond in the rough!!!

M.: I had my son at Baylor Grapevine two years ago and had a very good experience. I believe they have since built a new wing onto the birth center so the facilities may be new. My suggestion would be to go over to both and just do a walk through. You will meet some of the nurses on duty and could probably get a feeling of which facility and staff you feel most comfortable with. Good luck!

I was very pleased with N. Hills. I had Dr. Allen as my OBGYN but Dr. Safely delivered. Both Dr's are great and the facility was fabulous.

Love North Hills Hospital! I was induced April 2006 and ended up in an emergency C-Section...SCARED OUT OF MY MIND!! The nurses and doctors were absolutely wonderful and I felt very blessed to be in such good hands!! Two of my siblings and a nephew were also born there (1989, 1992, 1994). Just checked my mother-in-law out of there after a week of admission (not related to L&D, though, obviously!). No complaints...none.

M.-
Congrats on number three. I have had two sons born at North Hills and my twins at Baylor. I loved North Hills. It is small so you get that extra attention and care. They were wonderful there. But with my twins and the fact that they were likely to come premature, we chose to go to Baylor for the level 3 NICU. It was a good decision because they were premature and had to go to the NICU. I can't say enough about about the NICU staff there. Wonderful! For delivery though it was not the best situation. They were overcrowded. When I should of been in anti-partum to stop the labor I was in delivery. After they were born, I went to anti-partum. I didn't go to postpartum until right before I left the hospital. It was crazy. One women even dlivered in the hallway because it was so crowded while I was there. CRAZY!
Good luck choosing.

Hi M.,

I have been in the emergency room and have had some tests done at North Hills Hospital. Also, I've had some family members that were cared for there. The staff has always been helpful and friendly. When I've gone for tests, they've always been very punctual as well. Finding a hospital you like is an important decision! I wish you the best of luck.

We've been to North Hills for day surgery and Baylor for tests in the hospital. We got more attention and better care from the staff at North Hills, but that may have been because we weren't checked into the hospital at Baylor. Both seemed to give very good care, medically speaking. No problems.

I had my baby at Baylor just two months ago and had a great experience! The nurses were great, the food was great, and the lactation consultants were awesome! I had a c-section and the nurses checked on me frequently and were very helpful. I had a lot of family in town, and they were very respectful of them too.

I really liked the North Hills Hospital's facilities, and how they encourage you to try other things other than just laying in bed....the nursing staff was great....I took the tour there, and classes as well, and felt great about it. They don't seem to have a good reputation in other kinds of care for some reason, but I was really happy with the labor/delivery stuff that I saw, and there was even a bed in the suites for the spouse to stay with you. HOWEVER, my water broke 6 weeks early and they were going to have to induce labor, but they didn't have a NICU on campus and would have to transfer the baby to Childrens or wherever. That was absolutely NOT acceptable for us, especially since we had no family/friends in town and couldn't bear the idea of having us at 2 separate facilities. They made emergency arrangements for me to be transferred by ambulance to Baylor Allsaints in downtown Ft Worth, which was great, and I can't say enough about the NICU there. However, there wasn't a bed for my husband and I did send him home every night.

I had my son at North Hills last April and could not have been happier. He was born GBS infected and the staff was awesome. They took care of him there (didn't have to transfer him) and he was on antibiotics (IV) for 10 days. I of course was discharged before he was able to go home, but the staff was so caring, and understanding and that made the near impossible task of leaving him, possible. They do have it where if you are discharged and they have rooms available you can "hotel" for $40. You get all your meals still, and linens of course, but no meds or medical care.

It's a beautiful labor and delivery ward and I was pleased that the lactation nurse called me at home after baby finally was released to see how nursing was going. She was very "real" and not like the other lactation nurse I had at another hospital. She was very helpful in encouraging nursing, but also realizing that my jaundiced baby needed more than what I was able to give him and helped mimic nursing with formula. (I forget the technical term for it)

I'm still in touch with a couple of the nurses that took care of us, if that gives you any indication of the level of commitment at North Hills.

Congrats on #3 and if you like your OB, don't be concerned about going to North Hills.
