I'm newly pregnant and also new to the area and I'm deciding between Lewisville Med. Center and Baylor Grapevine. Anyone have experiences they could share about either. I hear a lot of people say they had a friend who had a bad Lewisville experience but not many first hand stories. It sounds like a lot of people like Grapevine too but also sounds like they are quicker with the c-sections.
The things that are important to me are: myself (or hubby) to be with the baby at all times, friendly competant nurses, and a nursing staff/doc who isn't going to push induction or c-section unless its medically neccessary. I'm not a high risk case and I didn't have any complications last time so I'm hoping for the same again!
Also, any comments regarding Dr Van Dell, Dr Rose, or Dr Rost would be great too!!
thanks!!
I had a wonderful experience at Baylor Grapevine. So much so that when I needed to change to a new ob/gyn, I looked for one specifically at Baylor Grapevine. I don't know about the c-section thing, I didn't have that kind of experience and I don't know anyone else who has either.

I have never used Lewisville's hospital but I do go to Baylor Grapevine. I love it. I have also used Dr. Rost before and he is a good doctor but he didn't help me with my issues. I am not able to have children and he didnt do anything to try and figure out why. I use Dr. Julia Flowers in Grapevine and she is fantastic. She was a lifesaver to my husband and I during a really tough time. She is an excellent Doctor. I also have a friend that works in maternity at Baylor and she is so nice and caring towards everyone. I hope this helps.

I delivered my daughter at Lewisville Medical Center last year and had a great experience. The nurses were extremely competent, friendly and supportive. At one point, my doctor did think they would have to do a c-section because the babies heart rate was dropping. I asked if anything could be done to prevent or postpone the c-section and they put me on oxygen to get the heart rate up. The oxygen worked and I was able to have a normal delivery. Again, I would recommend the Lewisville hospital to all that inquire and if I have future children, I'll definitely go there again! Good luck with your decision.

I delivered both of my daughters at Lewisville Medical Center. Dr. Rose was the doctor on call when I had my first daughter. I had to have a C-section because she was breach. He did a great job. My water broke at 4:40. We drove to the hospital and by 6:15 we had a beautiful baby girl in our arms. The staff was excellent and they have the highest level NICU in Denton county. My second daughter was 5 weeks early and was in the NICU. The NICU staff was wonderful and very thorough.

I had planned to have as natural a birth as possible and while things didn't go as planned, I would definitely recommend Baylor Grapevine. I labored for 53 hours, and the nurses were very supportive of my decision to not have an epidural or IV (I did have a hep-lock). They got a CD player for me, I labored on an exercise ball, and even sat in the jacuzzi tub. While they probably didn't agree with all of my "natural" ways, they were very supportive. It was a great hospital for me to deliver.

hi J.
i just wanted to say what a WONDERFUL experience i had at Lewisville hospital. Not only was my doctor great..who by the way is Dr. Van Dell...i trust my life with that man!! If you do choose him, tell him his pre-eclamsic case sent you..(S. kirkland)...but he'll know who i am!!!!... but my nurses were over the top awesome!!! I had pre-eclampsia and was in terrible shape and uncomforable, i was rude and they were nice right back to me! :) I was on bed rest there for 5 days and then came right back for an emergency c-section the next day and even those nurses were wonderful and sensitive and patient. My son was in the NICU for 7 weeks and i am SOOOO glad i was at that hospital...the care we all received was excellent!!! If we do have another, no doubt in my mind, LEWISVILLE!!! (of course there is a new hospital going up in flower mound!! ;) ...) i hope you have a wonderful experience

Hi, I was just wanting to respond to your question. I would recommend Medical Center of Lewisville, it has a more cozy feel and has a great women's and children program. Both facilities have a NICU if there were to be any problems. Lewisville's NICU is a little smaller but you have the benefit to get to know the nurses by name and see them daily. The labor rooms are large and have nice wood floors. To make a final decision I would recommend touring both facilities and seeing which is easy to get to from your house. Also, check to see if your doctor has privledges at both facilities. He/She may only deliver at one or the other. My doctor (Dr. VanDell) delivers at both. Good luck and I hope you are comfortable were you decide to go. Again, both facilities are great I would just pick Lewisville because of the smaller feel and more attention. J.

Lewisville was GREAT! I have been a patient of Dr Rose for almost 10 years now and he is wonderful! I had three children there. My first child was an emergency c-section, and everyone was great. Very nice nurses in the maternity ward. Definitely made you feel comfortable. I had my twin boys there 4 years ago and again they were great again. Since I was considered a high risk pregnancy (identical twins) I had to be there alot, and they also had the specialist I had to see on site too. When I had my c-section I had two sets of nurses, doctors, everything. They also really loaded me up with free stuff (since I had two babies) and made sure to give me all the numbers to call if I needed help or was having a hard time (emotionally) after I went home with them. I thought that was really nice, since bringing home two babies was alot more work! : )
They also had just upgraded their maternity ward and nursery so its really nice! Good luck where ever you decide! : )

A neighbor of mine used Dr. Rost for all 3 of her pregnancies. She did deliver via C-section, but there were some complications. Fortunately, all 3 babies/kids are doing great!
I don't personally use Dr. Rose, but I do see someone in his office. I delivered at Lewisville without being pushed into a C-section. It was a wonderful experience. A friend of mine had a baby at Lewisville about 7 months before me. Then, she had another one about 13 months after me. She said each was a very different experience, with the most recent being much more positive.
So, go check out both hospitals, but I do think you will have a great experience at Lewisville.

I couldn't have asked for anything better. I did have two C-Sections, but after pushing for over two hours, my son was not progressing AT ALL & it was necessary. Because he was so large I also had a C-Section with my daughter. Good luck with your decision. :)

I have been a patient of Dr. Rose in Lewisville for about 10 years. I adore him! He is so sweet and he and I click well. I had my first child at lewisville and had a perfectly wonderful experience. My husband, mom & sister were all with me in the delivery room. As soon as they took my daughter, my husband went with. I think they are changing that so that the mom can be there when they clean the baby up after birth...not sure yet. Talking to Dr. Rose tomorrow. My baby roomed with me and she only went to the nursery for little routine checks or if I wanted a little quiet time. The lactaction consultant was awesome! I had really bad problems with my milk and with my daughter latching and she worked with me for a couple of weeks. The nurses were all nice. A week after my daughter was born she had to be readmitted due to jaundice. The nurses were awesome! The lactation consultant came back to visit and see how things were going and help me out again! Overall, I have no complaints. I've used Lewisville ER on a few occasions and again...I've got no complaints about lewisville medical center. I do know they just opened a mother's boutique in the hospital and are making some neat changes. I'd visit both hospitals and dr's before making that final decision! Good luck! I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant and looking forward to another great experience at Lewisville!

With my first child nursing was one of the most emotional experince I had with the nurse trying to help me get baby to nurse and understand that meaning of nursing. I had no problems even with my other children. We even loved the fact on how they take saftey to consideration. One time a baby was not found they did a an emergency locked down until baby was found. What happen was that the dad had took baby and it was right before shift changes and nurse failed to inform the nurse so baby was not missing but it was great to see the caution they took. I really injoyed to see that it made me feel better about the saftey of my children. hope this helps you an GOD BLESS.

I delivered 2 of my 4 at Baylor Grapevine. I had a very good experience both times. I've also had several friends/relatives deliver there also with very good results - some even high-risk or special issues. I would recommend going there. If you are looking for a different kind of experience and an unmedicated birth, I agree with a PP about Inanna. I delivered the last 2 there and LOVE those women that work there. They are awesome. Also about BG, I did see that a PP said something about getting special permission for the baby to stay with you and I'm not sure if she was talking about the baby rooming in or not but I know that we did not have any issues with that at all and no special permission was required. Congratulations and all the best of luck to you and your family! Oh, and welcome to Texas!

Have you visited either hospital? I would go to them and ask questions and see where you feel more comfortable. I delivered both children at Baylor. Yes, they were c-section but my amniotic fluid got low with my first one. We induced but I would not dialate and I had to have her within a week. I have friends that use Dr. Rost and like him but I used Dr. Kerry Neal. He is at the womens center in Baylor. Good luck to you and YOUR decision.

Just about everyone I know, including myself, delivered at Lewisville Medical Center. I have NEVER heard a bad story from any of them.
When I had my daughter I had two requests: to please not give her a pacifier and that I wanted her in my room at all times. It was wonderful! After she was delivered (via c-section due to complications)my husband was allowed to go into the nursery with her while they finished my surgery. Once they were done with all her tests, she was in my room the rest of the time. Of course they did take her back down occasionally to do any shots or lab work that was required. They have the nicest staff I have ever seen (L&D and nursery). I highly recommend them.
I did not personally see any of the docs you mentioned, but my sister in law does see Dr.VanDell and is very happy with him. (She is on her 2nd child to be delivered by him)
Hope you find this helpful. Good luck!

I delivered my twin boys at Baylor Grapevine and it was fantastic. The rooms were nice and the nurses were really great. My doctor is Dr. Rebecca Robert and she was fantastic. All twins are delivered in the OR even if the are not C-section so that is where mine were born. The surprising thing is that my twins were born an hour and fifty minutes apart. A less patient doctor probably would have taken my second by C-section but since Dr. Robert was really patient and he wasn't in distress I got to avoid that. I think how quick they are to do a C-section is probably more about the doctor than the hospital.

I had both my kids at the Lewisville with the same OB. Dr. Fliedner is great. I know about 5 people who have used him or are using him. We all have great things to say about him.
I really had a great experience with L/D and got to go home after 24 hours with my second. I have food allergies and the hospital never can manage to feed me well. I get rice, chicken, and salad at every meal. It's so much better at home. I have the same problem at my mother-in-law's too, so I don't think it's the hospital's fault. I just have a daunting list of allergies. Either way you go, you'll have a beautiful healthy baby.

I want to highly recommend Inanna Birth & Women's Center in Denton.. if you're in Argyle it's pretty close. I just had our son there two weeks ago and it was a better experience than I ever could have imagined! The midwives are amazing and even through I turned into a high-risk case, I was still able to have an amazing birth experience thanks to them. Like you, my hubby and I wanted to stay with the baby and let him come naturally without an induction or too many medical interventions. The ladies on this site gave me Inanna's name when my OB switched practices 6 1/2 months into my pregnancy, and I'm so glad they did. I just had to pass it along. www.inannabirth.com :)

I have been a womens services RN and educator for over 15 years and the one constant I have noticed is that it is not the hospitals policies but the individual physicians that make all of the difference. The hospital policies are important when it comes to things like rooming in, breastfeeding and pacifier use. I can tell you that Baylor Grapevine is a great hospital and Dr Rost is a very patient, compassionate and excellently skilled OB-GYN. I have never worked at Lewisville but I do teach classes and have some of my moms that have delivered there. You hear stories from almost every hospital but the majority of them are really wonderful. Ask your friends about the postpartum care and nursery nurses. This is what will make or break your stay. Choose your Dr carefully, this is what will make or break your delivery.
We teach all of the classes you need with all of the resources and honest answers at The Nestingplace. Please look at our website to see if you might like to come see us for your childbirth education. www.thenestingplace.net thanks and good luck,

I did have a c-section (my labor wasn't progressing b/c baby was in the wrong position and his head was starting to get stuck in my pelvic bone), and the anesthisiologist(sp?) was great before, during, and after the surgery at making sure I was comfortable and at calming my nerves.
My husband and I also learned a lot at the birthing classes. The nurse who led the class was very patient with answering all sorts of questions from everyone. Overall, I had a great experience!

Hi J.,
I had both of my kids at Baylor Grapevine and they were both wonderful experiences, I think the decision weather to do a c section or not is up to the doctor not the hospital. I understand the need to have first hand experience info, so I wanted to share my story. My daughter was born in late Jan of 07 and everything went great, but my niece was born exactly 6 weeks later (also at baylor grapevine and the same doctor) with what seemed like a normal birth. Long story so I will try and keep it short! Riley( my niece) was born by c-section after 8 hours of labor so our doctor does not rush them. She was brought into the room for a feeding after my sister was out of recovery and everything was fine but about 6 hours later she stopped eating. Thinking something was wrong my sister sent her back to the nursery to have them look at her. Come to find out, she had developed spinal meningitis due to my sister having strep b. The ironic thing about this is our doctor, as well as all others, testes us for that in the 1st trimester and again in the 3rd and she was negative. It happens so rarely that you really have it but test negative that the whole maternity ward was in shock. As a matter of fact, our doctor from that point on weather you test positive or negative gives the antibiotic in the iv while you're in labor. Riley ended up staying in the nicu for 30 days, before she was able to come home. There was a point there that we nor the doctor's thought she would pull through. We credit the nicu staff, doctors, and nurses for her amazing recovery, as a matter of fact our pedi. is also there so everytime she takes Riley to see him, she makes a special trip up there to see the nicu staff! I would not think of having a baby anywhere else, they are the best of the best as far as I am concerned. We use Dr. Angelo Mendez, a partner of Dr. Rost and from what I've heard he is also wonderful. Hope this helps make your decision and good luck.

Hi,
One of my friend had bad experience with baylor grapevine. I was going to go to lewisville in august 07 then decided to do home birth. But when you go to visit the hospital, ask the person who's giving you a tour that keeping baby with you is important and based on that you are making your decision. They could get special permission for baby to be with you all the time.

Hi J.. Congrats on the baby!! I am also pregnant, due at the end of Jan. I will be delivering at Baylor Grapevine even though I live in Lewisville. I do NOT like Medical Center of Lewisville at all! While I have no experience with the L/D part of the hospital, the experiences I have had there have NOT been pleasant. They make it quite clear that the bottom line for them is money, not patient care. A good friend of mine delivered there last year and said it was a nightmare. I know several people that have delivered at BG and loved it. I also have a friend that is a nurse in the mother/baby unit and she has said it's very well run and patient care is paramount. I have been there twice during my pregnancy, once for emergency GYN surgery and the second for problems related to that surgery and both experiences were good. I was not in the antepartum unit the second time only because they had just one available bed, so I opted to be placed on Med/Surg. Not my preference but having worked at Arlington Memorial on post partum and L/D I was not going to take that last antepartum bed from a woman who could possibly need it when I knew my pregnancy was stable. The second time I went in I did go through L/D triage, not the regular ER, and the care was fabulous!! So, if that's any precursor to how the care will be when I deliver then I know I have made the best choice. HTH and good luck!!
M.
P.S. Having worked on these units in the past I can tell you that the decision to section you is made totally by the doctor. A hospital cannot dictate the care that a physician gives to his patient. Though not to say they don't try in some instances, but most hospitals just like OB's want to avoid a C/S just because the risks are much greater to both mom and baby.

I work at Baylor Grapevine in Women and Children's Services - I delivered 2 of my own children there as well. Personally I love Dr. Rost - he delivered my second child - he SHOULD have been a c/s - but was not and it was a traumatic birth - Dr. Rost was sooooo sorry - no one at all could have anticipated his size - he was exellent on all levels.
I am biased since I work there - but we nurses are great!! We do have a high c/s rate - but a lot of it is PATIENT request - not pushed by doctors all the time.

I delivered my baby at Baylor Grapevine with Dr. Rost last October and had a great experience. I did 100% natural childbirth with no complications and a huge cheering section from the nurses there! The L&D nurses at B.Grapevine are amazing!! And the Recovery nurses were all fantastic as well. Dr. Rost is so thorough, knowledgable, and patient throughout the entire pregnancy. And he is very calm, focused, and supportive in those final moments of delivery. The term C-Section never came up that day. He is 100% on board with trying to make your "perfect" birth happen.
As for being with your baby after delivery: baby stayed in the room with us for a while - enough time to do the apgar, breastfeed, and cuddle & oogle a bit. Then they took him to the nursery to clean him up and do all the usual new baby stuff (hubby can watch this from the window). However, that was the time they used to clean me up too, feed me, and get me moved over to my recovery room. Once in recovery it was up to me and my husband on how much we had him in (or out of) our room.
I have recommended Dr. Rost to several of my friends who are now getting started with their families and all of them rave about him now too.
Good luck in your decision! I hope I was of some assistance.

I had both my boys at Lewisville Medical Center and my appendix removed there. I had great care all three times. The nurses I had with both my deliveries were very helpful and caring and the nurses who took care of me after delivery were great, too. I wouldn't go anywhere else to have a third child, if we decide to have another. The main reason I say this is because of the NICU staff. Both my sons spent some time in the NICU after they were born. My last son who was born last summer was in there for a week. I had to leave the hospital without my precious, new baby. I couldn't have done it if it weren't for the nurses in the NICU. They were the most kind, helpful, loving people I've ever had the opportunity to meet. The were never in a hurry with us. They took time to sit with us and answer all our questions and spoke to me over the phone when I had a question or just needed reassurance. They took excellent care of my baby. You may never need the services of the NICU, but they have a wonderful one if you do. The labor and delivery rooms are very nice, too. You can have your baby in the room with you after delivery and there is a bed for your spouse. As far as induction and c-sections go, that is something you and your doctor need to discuss. I don't think nurses have much say in that area. Good luck to you and your family!!

First of all I LOVE Dr. VanDell. He delivered my 10 month old at Baylor Grapevine. I am sure you wouldn't be disappointed by his care, I am a high risk pregnancy and he was very attentive.
I chose Baylor Grapevine because I have never been comfortable with Lewisville. I have taken my 6 year old to the ER a couple of times and they are absolutely clueless. I have had friends and family who have received services in other departments and they ended tragically. As far as OB I have heard good and bad. I was just much more comfortable with Baylor. Lewisville is literally 2 minutes from my house, but it was worth the drive to go to Baylor. I did have a male labor and delivery nurse at Baylor, and that was a little different, but he was very attentive.
Good luck!!

Dr.Van Dell is an excelent doctor, I am sorry you have heard bad things about Lewisville but I have to disagree. I used to be employed by Lewisville; however I gave birth to two of my children at Baylor Grapevine. I already had a doctor associated with Baylor for many years, so therefore I had no choice. I would have to say, Lewisville is more family friendly than Grapevine. The nurses at Lewisville seem to care more while the nurses at Grapevine seem to care more about the pay. Hi J.-
I've delivered at both - and hands down the best experiences for me were at Lewisville Medical Center. The nurses were awesome!
I used Dr. Rost with my first pregnancy - and did end up with a c-section. Looking back I think it could have ended differently, but I don't have any regrets. Now I use Dr. Stanley Franklin who is affiliated with Lewisville and love he and his staff.
