New Refrigerator

We just bought a Samsung 28.5 cu ft. black refrigerator with French doors and the freezer on the bottom. I LOVE the spaciousness of it, however, when it arrived I noticed that the finish was a smooth shiny black. I thought it was going to be a textured (Matte?) black finish....don't know why I would assume that, but that's what I wanted. Do any of you have problems keeping your black refrigerators clean of smudges and finger prints? Do they even make the textured finishes anymore in higher end models? How do you keep yours clean on the outside? My other stainless one was modeled with streaks and spots and looked awful....my husband tried to put some muscle power into it, and he couldn't even get it clean. I wanted to get your overall advice on this type of french door/freezer on bottom type, as well. If you have one, do you like it? We have 30 days to live with this one and decide whether we want to trade it in or not. (It also sticks out farther than our other one, leaving a very narrow pass by, because of the island....but I love all the extra space in the fridge!) I'm torn. Thanks for any advice you can offer!

What can I do next?

We have the same fridge, only we got the "matte" stainless. It's almost like brushed nickel, and we love it! 3 young kids, a teenager and one more baby on the way, and I only clean my fridge doors once a week with GreenWorks. Good luck!

I have that same fridge, only in stainless. If you decide to keep it, get an extended warranty for it. Apparently, the ice maker always breaks and from what we've read online, isn't really fixable. I now just buy ice and put it in the ice container. Huge bummer. But, other than that, I like it. I like the freezer part best. It seems to hold a ton of food. I still haven't figured out the best layout for the top part though. Seems to fill up really fast.

Send it back and get the one your wanted. Don't wait, call your supplier and let them know you are not happy with finish and it is not what your ordered.

Those things cost a lot of money so I say get what you wanted.

Blessings..

Hi Monca---Sounds like you will never be happy with this fridge. I would take it back, first of all to get something that fits. There should be a minimum space between the refrigerator and the island, about 36", I think. Double check with a knowledgable person.

If you will always be 'grumpy' because you have to continually clean finger prints off of that shiny black surface, you will come to hate the situation. And, it shouldn't even be a question if it doesn't fit in the space properly.

Good luck. D.

i have a fridge like that, so sad to say that i do not love it. i dont like the shiny finish, its always a mess with the little kids, plus they climb/hang on the handles, and have recently discovered that they can stand on the ledge of the freezer door. i dont know how long the doors are gonna last since they are now a jungle gym. however, even if your kids arent little acrobats like mine, i still dont like the double doors. i love all the space inside, but i find that with the narrow doors and the narrow shelves its harder to get the stuff in the back, so everything ends up in front and when you go for stuff in the back, you sometimes take stuff out of the fridge to get back there. i cant tell you how many things i have found a day later on top of the fridge. and theres not enough tall space for bottles.

Send it back. I have the shiny black doors. I, not a child, I used a kitchen dish rag to wash it. A few days later it was sunny and it had scratches everywhere. I also noticed where people put magnets on and off there were more scratches.
I asked to buy textured doors or doors that can be covered with cabinets at my cost. I was told I was stuck with these doors AND the warranty doesn't cover it. There are even more scratches on it now.
There is a cleaner that covers scratches, but we are afraid of making it worse.

My husband is in the appliance biz. VERY few "textured" black surfaces, and they are on the low end models, usually the "old-fashioned" freezer on the top style.

BTW - my husband says a Samsung is a great fridge. Sounds like you have a "full-depth" one since it sticks out from the counter. They do have a lot of room though. We have a "counter-depth" fridge in the kitchen (we also have an island) and a full-depth one in the basement. Is that an option for you? Or maybe the larger one in the garage? Your model (or very similar) likely comes in the counter depth model also.

As for cleaning, just use an "all-surface" cleaner. Pledge makes a good one. Shiny black is kind of like stainless, smudges just tend to show. We have a stainless and I spray it once a day with the cleaner, then in between if I notice a smudge I just wipe with a dry dishtowel. That "polishes" it up quite well.

Good luck!

Send it back. Get what you ordered.

Smooth finishes - just like stainless steel - are hard to keep "clean"...what a pain in the backside!!!

I truly want a trio. I have 4 friends who LOVE LOVE LOVE theirs!!

Remeasure your space and the fridge. A narrow space may not work. You may have to find one that 'fits'!

Good luck!
