Hi, we are currently living in London but will be moving back to the Dallas area this summer. We have 2 boys, ages 3 and 6, the 6 yr old is in first grade now. We are looking at the Plano area to buy a house and getting a little overwhelmed. Any advice on good elem schools in the Plano ISD, personal experience with them? Would prefer to stay to the east side of Plano, maybe central.

What can I do next?

We live in the neighborhood near Davis Elementary, Haggard Middle School and Plano Sr. High. This is a very affordable area, while the homes are still nice. The schools are EXCELLENT. It is bordered on the west by Independence Parkway, on the north by Parker Road, on the south by Park Blvd., on the east by Custer Road.

I know of an excellent realtor who can help you--she had 5 children and LOTS of school and real estate experience.

All three of my children went to Davis Elementry School. Central Plano, I loved the school and the kids did great. Davis has also been a Blue ribbon school. Good luck with the house hunting.

Sorry this is late, but we moved from Houston to the Dallas area as a relo last year. I absolutely recommend renting for a bit first. We ended up buying in an area we weren't really considering, and we ended up totally being turned off by some of the areas that we were thinking that we wanted to live in because they, "looked good on paper." Traffic was a huge consideration for me! I am not going to give my two cents on where you should live, but am so thankful that we rented and didn't end up making a huge mistake by buying in the wrong place.

Plano's school district website has some great information. If you look at the elementary schools it will tell you what programs it participates in and who/what are active in the school and it should tell you how they are ranked. Blue Ribbon, Recognized, Acceptable etc. with test scores. I hope that helps a little. I live in DISD, but am a Realtor and this is a much asked question. I would start there as it will help you fit your child's preferences better.

Check out the Plano ISD website www.pisd.edu You can view the cluster schools, see testing results, and go to each school website.

We have a physical address of Allen but we are PISD schools. Our daughter went through Beverly which is a fantastic school. Ms Kirby has a great staff, Blue Ribbon School, nationally recognized and rates exemplary.

As of now, Beverly is in the East cluster, west of 75 at Custer/Hedgcoxe area. I've heard boundary lines will be changing and if so it will probably move to the Central cluster.

Best wishes on your move.

We live right in the middle of Plano and our kids go to Wells Elementry. It is Redbook Magazines "Best Elementry School in America" and gets the Blue Ribbon of Excellence Award(only 13 schools in Texas get that) every year. We moved her from Tennessee specifically so our kids could go to this school and I could not be happier! The High School has a 98% rate of kids who go on to college, that is unheard of except at a private school. The homes here range from $165-300,000 range.

I live in West Plano and have always been told to stay to the West. I can't help you in East Plano but the schools in West Plano are good. Hope this helps.

Hi L. Jane!

I have a girlfriend I am going to put you in touch with that grew up on the East side and is a former teacher. Email my regular email address and I will give you her details. Also, she has a son the same age as Jacob and a daughter the same age as Drew, so you will want to meet her anyway!

With that said, typically the west side is the area known for the schools not East. Not being biased because I grew up here...they are the schools with national rankings. You cannot go wrong with Plano schools, but if you are flexable with where you live, you might want to look west.

I personally wouldn't live on the East or West side of Plano. The best elementary school in Plano, by far, is Houston Elementary. My kids went to Wyatt, but the staff has changed and it isn't as warm. I have a sister that has been a teacher there for years. The principal is the best one around. Houston is in the Central cluster. With the boundary lines changing, I would stick to the middle whatever school you chose. I don't know if you plan on being in Plano for High School but that is something you need to consider. Stay in the Central!!!

If you want to consider West Plano, I absolutely love where my children go to school. I actually just put my house on the market to rent. You might want to think about renting before you purchase so you can figure out where you want to live.

Admittedly it has been a *few* years, but I attended Shepard Elementary, Wilson Middle, Vines High, and Plano Sr High. I really enjoyed all those schools, but I know that things have changed in the last 30 years. My sisters have sent their kids to the same schools and been happy with them. I would love to send my children to the same ones (I also happen to like the neighborhood), but I live in Norway. Am thinking about moving to Plano for one year for the sole purpose of getting my kids into Shepard.

Good luck. I don't think you can go very wrong anywhere in Plano or the Plano ISD; it is a great place to live!

I live just west of 75. I pretty happy with Shepard Elemenatary. It is in an older neighborhood. Plus the jr high and high school are all in the my neighborhood which means no major street crossign for child until he is 11th grade.

I did a TON of research about Plano, Allen, Frisco, and Lewisville ISDs, exactly this time last year when we were moving from the m-streets in Dallas. After everything I considered: location, school quality, neighborhoods, proximity to schools, school feeder patterns, proximity to parks, I chose our neighborhood because it fit everything I wanted (we live in the neighborhood that is adjoined with Carlisle Elem, Schimelpfenig MS, Jack Carter Park/pool and the Plano dog park). We are really happy about our choice. The MLS doesn’t always show the correct schools (or any) in the listings, but the Elementary’s that feed to Schimelpfenig MS (then Jasper HS and Plano Sr) are Bethany, Matthews and Carlisle.

PISD really has such a superb program. I really didn’t come across any schools that were “bad” – there’s just better and best.

We are in the realty/mortgage business and mainly handle "distress" sales - properties where the owner owes more on it than it's worth. We chose Plano because of the time-tested housing values as compared to the other areas.

Good Luck - contact me if you have additional questions

I moved to Plano from San Antonio a year ago. I have found the schools in Plano to be great. It was a sudden move for me, so I didn't do the research of which school was the best, however, I know that my children are learning a lot and are doing just as well as they did before. I live on the East side of Plano, which I'd probably have gotten a place on the west side of 75 if I did it again. I settled here because my parents had live in an apartment on the east side for 7 years, I used their address when I first moved here because I hadn't decided where I wanted to live. Anyway, the schools have been great. The teachers are very caring and supportive. My children are in honors classes and I feel they do get challenged and they do have lots of opportunities. I think Plano ISD is great where ever you live.
Welcome to Texas!

L., You should check out the Murphy area. (East Cluster) It's up and coming. Great home values with large lots, small town feel. New development is going on now with great new shopping centers and restaurants as well of some great new neighborhoods. What really makes them awesome is their schools, all PISD. Go to PISD website and check out the stats for Hunt, Boggess and Murphy Middle School. They all offer a "private-school" feel. A new high school will be built before your children reaches this stage of their academic life. Another great area is Parker in Spring Hill Estates or Dublin Road. This part of Parker feeds into a great elementary school, Hickey, but not so great middle, Bowman. But, things are changing for the good. Another nice thing about both of these two communities is their quick access to 75 and George Bush with the feel and qualities expected in a small community. Welcome back to the USA. London, however, is quite a neat place to live. How awesome for your children.

L.,

I moved to Plano, Texas from Canada in 1995 and I too had two young children at that time. However, my move was not that bad because my company assisted me in this move. The realtor I dealt with was not good at all but yet I bought my home through her.

Well years later, I became a realtor myself and I would love to assist you with your house and school search. Plano has excellent schools. Some good elementary schools are Skaggs, Matthews and Beverly on the West side but since you are interested in the East side there are a few in both Allen and Plano. In order for me to best assist you, please answer these questions for me.

1. What is price range or the maximum price you will pay for your home.

2. Age of the home. Do you want a newer home like brand new or a few years old?

4. Do you want a 2 storey or single storey home?

Any other preferences about this home?

I look forward to working with you. Please email or phone me anytime.
