I would suggest going to a good ENT. It could be nothing or signs of something that should be taken care of.
About 5 years ago, he ran into a sliding glass door, and for about a year after that he had nosebleeds. Then, for the next 4 years, he really had no nosebleeds. Now he is getting nosebleeds again - each time for no apparent reason. It's not a problem getting them to stop or anything, but he's had about 5 in the past month. Is there something I should be doing about this? How concerned should I be?

I had frequent nose bleeds as a child. They were attributed to being in dry environment.
I always say - A trip to the doctor now is better than a "I wish I would have" later.
I am experiencing the same thing with my 15 year old. All the advice people have given are the same advice that I have been receiving. I don't have a problem stopping the nose bleeds. Since I have experienced it with my older son. People have also told me it's when they are growing. Ent doc told me not to worry unless it gets very bad. I seen sometimes he gets them often and at times he doesn't seem to get them for a while. Two years ago I had one of the nosterils cauterized and that helped. I also was told to put vaseline in the nosteril to keep it moist. My son doesn't use it often but when he gets the nose bleeds he uses it for a couple of days and it seems to help. If you aren't comfortable with peoples advice take him to a Ent doctor to put your mind at ease.
It could just be his sinuses. My kids due this sometimes when the humidity is high or during the winter when it gets dry. My Dr. has told me not worry unless it will not stop easily. You might ask your Dr. just to be on the safe side.
Hi - I like someone else had them frequently as a child and also into my teenage years. I still get them on occasion. I put vaseline in my nose every night!! Have for years as this coats the membranes and usually they are close to the surface when you get them frequently so this helps greatly.
Good luck!
As a child I had frequent nosebleeds.....had to have my nose packed one summer. I got my nosebleeds when I was over heated and or in the dry winter months.
I have a 5 1/2 yr old daughter who started getting them last winter. Had her ped check it out & nothing they could see.....so she told us to do the nose saline solution spray, two squrts twice a day to keep it moist up there.
You should have dr look at it as he may have a blood vessel near the surface inside his nose & the littlest trama or even blowing his nose may cause it to bleed, happened to my sister in law. had it cauterized & she never had any trouble after that...
GOOD LUCK!
Hello D.,
When I was about 5yrs. old, I got bit on the top of my head by a german shepard (working dog for my uncle who's blind and deaf), and I had massive nose bleeds, but also I was very accident prone. I ran into alot of things...anyhow, by the time I was 10 1/2yrs. old, and staying with one of my older sisters for the summer, I had gotten extremely hot and the heat always triggered the nose bleeds. So my sister took me up at the hospital, because we couldn't get it to stop and it soaked my shirt. Found out that I had a broken blood vessel from stress related and being accident prone, they had to fix it, from having a broken blood vessel it had caused me to have massive dizzy spells and when they had gone and burnt the vessel, no pain by the way..had helped me out alot from becoming ill and dizzy. Good Luck!
I would make an appointment with an Ear/Nose/Throat specialist to have his sinuses checked. In the meantime, try running a humidifier in the house to see if it helps. Sometimes extreme dry air can help cause nose bleeds. But definitely have it checked out.
My son had the same problem. We took him to an ear, nose and throat doctor who cauterized the "bleeder" in his nose. I'd get a referral from the pediatrician and go see an ENT doc.
We just recently had to take my daughter in to the dr because she was having nose bleeds for no apparent reason. One thing the dr said was that the number one cause is of course sticking your finger in your nose. But another thing is the change in the weather like when it gets dry like in winter.
But another thing to look for is have you noticed any other symptoms like less active, easy to bruise, lack in appetite, no energy? If he has any of these symptoms then you need to take him to the dr and have him checked for cancers. Nose bleeds for no reason could be a sign.
And finally, he may just have his blood vessels in his nose close to the surface. My husband had that when he was growing up and would have no bleeds all the time for no reason. They sent him to a Nose, Ear and Throat dr and they burned the vessels so they wouldn't bleed all the time.
Hope this info helps. I know how scary it is to see your child have nose bleeds and for no reason. My daughter woke us up with one in her bed. It was so scary.
Good luck,
J.
my son is 6 yrs. old and it seems like he wouldn't have any blood left in him after all the ones he gets. he sees an ENT specialist for chronic sinus disease(a snuffy nose that rarely goes away). his doc said he has thin membranes & is prone for easy nose bleeds. your child's pediatrician can look up his nose & tell you on your next visit.
My son and nephew both get nose bleeds similar to what you described...you may want to check into allergies. My son doesn't get them near as bad or as often as long as he takes his allergy medication.
Hello D.. This might be something you would want to consult your son's Doctor with. However, I can't be in hot water or hot areas for long because the heat thins your blood and then I get nose bleeds. Also, the air in your home or son's school could be too dry and that could be causing it. A humidifier is great if you can afford one, if not you could just boil water on the stove. Also, a children's asprin a day might help, but I would consult a Dr or Pharmasist PRIOR to doing that. When I am off of my asprin I get more frequent nose bleeds. Hope that helps some!
Try to get him to eat yogurt daily for a while. They SHOULD stop or get better. Make SURE it's decent yogurt, not some w/ lots of high fructose corn syrup, etc.
Hi D.. My son also gets frequent nose bleeds. Usually during the night though. I don't know how open you are to homeopathy, but I use a remedy called phopherus for nose bleeds. I usually have to go to Whole Foods or North Star (on 116th in Fishers) to get any remedies.
At that frequency, I personally would be calling the doctor. Unless of course he is taking a lot of allergy medicine - I know if I take Benadryl more than two days in a row I get nosebleeds.l I wouldn't freak out or anything, but certainly that is worth a doctors visit
If the air is really dry, maybe try putting a humidifier in his room at night.
I would call your pedi and ask. Out of the blue my step daughter will get nose bleeds, sometimes I think the weather has a lot to do it with it or it could be just allergies, not sure I'm not a Doc just a guess. Give them call and let us know. Take care.
Sounds to me like you need to express your concerns to your son's pediatrician. I think they'd be able to address your questions.
Hi D., I had nosebleeds a few years back and took 1,000 mg of timed release vitamin C every day and they stopped. I also eat a real orange each day to help with nosebleeds and a persistant sore throat. I've heard from chiropractors that vitamin C will help, if not eliminate, nosebleeds in children. You can purchase several kinds of vitamin C, including timed release and chewable. However, be cautious about the very inexpensive brands. Start low on the doseage and add more until you notice a difference. God Bless! M.
Hello, I had very bad nose bleeds as a child. I would suggest to see an ear/nose/throat doctor. I saw an ENT and had to have my nose culturized. After they did this I never had nosebleeds again. Take Care!
Hi D.! I have three kids and they range from 8,6, and 14 months. My son who is 8, gets them all the time and we tell him to Quit rubbing his nose so much and we have him use nose spray called ocean spray. They have it for kids. Christian has active airways and we think he is growing out of it but, when its really dry in our house he rubs his nose really hard and it always breaks this vein in is nose and thats why he gets them! Good Luck?! H. H.
