He could be low in iron. That can cause frequent nosebleeds also. My sister and I both suffered from it as children. Once we started taking Iron supplements in childhood, the bleeds stopped.
I am baffeled about my 11 yr olds constant nose bleeds. They come out of nowhere. We could be outside playing and he starts bleeding. Even in the house doing homework it will just start bleeding and he wont know till he has dripped all over his work. I have had a couple of calls from school for the same thing. I thought at first he was picking his nose, but that wasn't it. I have tried saline thinking his nose was too dry and nothing is working.

You should get him to his doctors due to it could be a bigger medical problem. I have seen this before and it could be very serious...
Hi There,
Have you tried using a humidifier? I've lived in Atlanta for 10 years. However, I moved to Michigan for one year and had the same problem. I had nose bleeds several times a day. My doctor said it was because of the change in climate since it's so dry up there. Try using the humidifier and if that doesn't work, you may want to head to the doctor.
Good Luck!

My mother and I both had nosebleeds like that throughout our childhood. I never really found a reason WHY, exactly..... but here's a great tip to stop the bleeding: keep anything metal (we usually used a butter knife)in the freezer and when a nosebleed starts, place the COLD metal object on the back of the neck just below his nead. It works like a charm. We never tried an icepack, but that might work. However, it was from my grandmother's family and they all swore that it had to be metal! Good luck!
Very well could be a sinus infection or it could be something MORE serious. My daughter was doing this until November of 2007 when she had her tonsils removed and now they have stopped. I would Contact his Doctor. Good luck.

He may have to be cauterized (sinus area) - my son also experienced nose bldeds. Although he is young - another sign of nose bleeds is high blood pressure. Does it run in your family?
My son is 11 and has the same problem. It happens almost weekly. Does anyone else in your family have this problem?
My father did and finally ended up having to get a small capillary in his nose cauterized. That's what was causing it. The capillary had grown up to the surface of his nasal passage and would occassionally bleed into his nose. Ask your piediatrician about that. I need to remember to do the same.

Saline will actually dry out the membranes more - because it has salt in it. Try the spray labeled "extra moisturizing", that contains oxymetazoline, to actually keep the membranes from drying out. But you'll probably need to bring him to the doc to find out what's causing them.
I had nose bleeds as a kid, and my mom gave me oranges daily and increased my daily intake vitamin c by 1000 milligrams, try it you may see a reduction or at least keep away nasty colds! It cant hurt.
I am sorry to hear about the nose bleed problem, but nose bleeds were common for my 3 brothers and I during childhood. We were constantly in the nurse's office at school especially in the Summer, but pretty much year round. The only solution (unfortunately) is to have your doctor cauterize the nose, which I can guarantee will stop nose bleeds forever (unless child has an injury, breaks his nose, etc.). It is a painful procedure, but if done with anesthesia and by a good doctor, it shouldn't be too bad. It does work and it is a solution OR you can just deal with it and by the time he is in his adulthood (30's) he will grow out of it, we did. My older brother's nose was cauterized and he didn't have to suffer with the nose bleeds as we did. Hope this helps, talk to your doctor about cauterizing. Take care, A. "Lily"

I had the same problem when I was that age..My nose would bleed for no reason. My ped. at that time told me it was related to allergies..He told me that I would outgrow it..and I did..He told me that Benadryl would help.
Good luck!

Hi R., my daugter use to have nosebleeds like your son. They would just come on out of the blue and I would check her fingers to see if you could tell if she was a picker but nothing. This started at the age of 3 and she is now 9. When she was 5 they really started to alarm me how often they were coming on. So, I finally pushed the doctor on the issue more and Christmas 2004 she had her adnoids and tonsils out and boy what a difference. They said her adnoids were large for her age and she does have allergies so the combo made her more prone to get them. She still gets some but now it is only when the season is changing from summer to fall due to allergies. The Q-tip and vasoline trick is a good idea. I hope this helped and I wish you luck.

Don't rule out the possibilty of a bleeding disorder. If your son shows signs of brusing fairly easy that is another clue. You should let his doctor know about the nosebleeds so they can make sure it isn't something more serious.
I used to have nosebleeds a lot as a kid. If you just looked at my nose it would bleed. Same with my dad. My doctor told my mom I would grow out of it which is true but I still get more nosebleeds than most adults.
My son had the same problem. He had a blood vessel in his nose too close to the surface. Initially, the ENT physician cauterized the blood vessel, but after a few months, the nosebleeds would start again. He eventually had surgery to have the blood vessel removed and that stopped the problem. My daughter has experienced the same, but cauterization seems to work for her.
THere is an old wives tale that really worked for my brother when he was little. You might not believe it, though!
Find an oak tree, have the child stand up next to the tree to see how tall he is. You know, like measuring his height.
Mark the tree like you would a wall. Right on that mark, make a small hole in the tree saving the shavings that fall out.
Take a little of the childs hair and put into the hole, then fill the hole back in with the shavings. When the child grows taller than the hole, the nosebleeds stop. It worked!
I know that you can't wait that long for them to stop. Have you read webmd.com about this? Or maybe searched for home remedies??
I am not sure if nose bleeds are a symptom of any kind of disorder or problem.
Hope this helps!!
If you have tried those things and nothing works, I think I would see the Dr. Praying it is nothing, but no need to ignore it and not see the Dr. I hope everything goes well and it could be sinus related.
I too used to have nose bleeds as a kid. The Doctor told my Mom that when my nose was not bleeding to use a q-tip and dip it in Vaseline. Gently rub the inside of the nostrils with the q-tip. Do this several times a day. To keep the membraines moist and keep them from rupturing. If you are using saline-it has salt in it and that just dries it out more. Especially coat the nostrils before bedtime. Try using a cool mist humidifier in his room also. Hope this helps. I know it has for me. Good Luck!

Like several people that wrote in, I had many nose bleeds during adolescence. It ran in my family. First go to the doctor to rule out any nasal issues. I have a friend that needed a small surgical procedure on some kind of vein...I forget the details. Not a big deal as I remember.
I found that blowing my nose helped stop the bleeding. I usually got out a little blood clot and then held the nose close for a minut or two. I found it soooo embarrassing during school!
I had the same problem from about 14 to about 20. I went to the doctor about it and they said that they could cauterize the inside of my nose but they didn't feel too excited about creating a bunch of scar tissue. (The reason cauterizing works is because it takes the thin skin of you nasal passages and turns it into scar tissue.) The dry air of winter air exacerbated by our using heaters is a culprit. For me, even diving too deep under water caused it. Anyway, it's something I eventually outgrew. I would recommend a vaporizer in your son's room at night and a product called Ayr (sp?) &/or Ocean spray. I would hesitate to cauterize the inside of his nose. Assuming he has no underlying health problem that's causing the bleeding, he's likely to outgrow this.
It could totally be no big deal, possibly sinus stuff. I would take him in to the dr. just to be on the safe side. Maybe ask them to run a CBC (quick and easy lab test) that could check his platelets. Keep us posted on how he is.
Consistent nosebleeds can be a sign of anemia- low iron content. You could take him to a nutritionalist to see what vitamins/ minerals he's lacking, or I'm sure a ped could do this too. In the meantime, it wouldn't hurt to start him on some iron supplements. Only problem there is they tend to constipate you. Liquid chlorophyl, which you can get at the health food store, is an excellent source of iron without the constipation side effect.
Hi R.,
Beth is right in that it usually occurs in someone with thin membranes in the nose. They tend to "pop" when irritated. But there is usually something that is irritating it. Dry heat, electric usually, can almost always cause a nosebleed in someone who is prone to them. Also, using saline gets the tissues wet but the salt has a drying effect so it is probably irritating also.
Synthetic chemicals can be a culprit. If you use Clorox, Windex, Cascade, Tide, etc then they are probably affecting him. They outgas so they are in the air whether the bottles are open or not. (Go down the chemical aisle at Wal-mart. The smell is not coming from broken bottles!)
The School system uses much stronger chemicals than you do at home so having nosebleeds at school would fit. I would detox the house and try a cool mist humidifier.
I speak to groups on environmental toxins in relation to cancers, child behavioral and neurological disorders like ADD, ADHD, Autism, SPD and also immune system disorders. If you would like any additional information, please feel free to email me or call me on my cell at ###-###-####. I'd love to help.

It may be allergies or a chronic sinus infection. Both can cause bad nosebleeds. The good news is that if they can stop easily (<5-10 min) they aren't dangerous. He should probably go to the doctor if they continue. You can also try some nasal gels to see if they work better than saline alone.
I had a ton of nose bleeds as a child they would happen just like your son's. I think they come up with that the membranes in my nose were thin so it was very easy for me to get nose bleeds. the older I got the less frequent they got. not I almost never get them. just teach him a few tricks on dealing with them, ie sucking on an ice cube can stop them faster than just holding a clothe to your nose. and using a blue wash cloth will make it easier to wash the blood out of. and always have something handy to stop the blood with.
Hello R.,
I heard that someone with nosebleeds could have a vitamin K deficiency. Here is what I found on the Internet.
VITAMIN K
Bleeding problems can occur with a vitamin K deficiency. Vitamin K helps the blood clotting process. Adequate amounts of vitamin K can be assured by consuming plenty of fruits and vegetables.
VITAMIN E
Vitamin E squeezed from a gel cap can be applied inside the nose as a lubricant to dry airways. However, Vitamin E is more likely to increase the risk of bleeding in patients on anticoagulant medications.
ZINC
Natural wound healer. Low zinc levels can impair wound healing
Good source of Vitamin K is in green leafy veg. such as found in Alfalfa, Broccoli, spinage, brussel sprout, cabbage, cauliflower, egg yolk, liver, oatmeal (not the suger ones)only use real maple syrup or blackstrap molasses in it to sweeten it up. My kids love their oatmeal like that. Molasses is also a good source of vitamin K too. Rye and safflower oil and wheat are too. I hope this helps. If your kids are a picky eater I suggest a good multi-vitamin from a whole food source. A Multi-vitamin that is cold processed and not heated. Made from whole food not synethic. I am a Distributor for Shaklee. They have wonderful vitamins for kids. My website is www.shaklee.net/bee_healthy. I find that sometimes it is hard to get my kids to eat good on some days. So it makes me feel good knowing they are taking a good natural food vitamin. Take care. I hope all works out for your son. ( I notice they underline my website it is hard to see the underscore in between bee and healthy. )

Hi R.,,,I think you should take your son to an Ear,Nose,Throat Doctor. Nosebleeds can be a sign of a more serious problem.Good Luck, M. R.
R.,
Go to his doctor and let him/her know what is going on. If you are sure he's not picking his nose it could be something else. My brother (who is now 26) had nosebleeds a lot when an adolescent and not until he was 19 and having surgery for a hernia did they notice he had a blood disease that makes his platlette count in his blood very large. He is now on medication for it, but they mentioned the fact that he had bloody noses a lot when he was younger might have been a sign. It is an easy blood test and can be ruled out early but I would definitely contact his doctor.
