i was playing with my dog one day and my 5 year old came up behind me,i ended up smacking him right in the nose,it was pretty hard, and he got a nose bleed.it wasnt an extreme amount of blood, but not too little either,i dont really know. it kinda just flowed out in a little line.anyways it wasnt hard to stop.the problem is hes had a couple since then, playing with his little sister, they bounced their heads together(but not that hard)and he started to bleed, then one time he was crying and it happened.and just playing around(he thinks hes an army ninja guy so hes always sneaking around and trying to do little jumps)but hell end up with a little blood coming out of his nose.not as much as the first time, usually with some snot.i dont know he never had a nose bleed before, and i feel so bad.did i do something to him,or is it the weather?what?please help!! i might just be worrying over nothing but like i said hes always been so healthy.and the most bloodive ever seen coming from countless scraped knees and elbows!!

What can I do next?

Hi D. - I wouldnt worry about it too much. He may have some scabbing in there from the initial bump that is getting opened up again. You might try some saline spray like Ocean several times a day to keep the nasal tissues moist and to promote healing.

Its nothing. Chidren have nosebleeds frequenty. If you can stop them there is no cause for alarm. His nose was injured so the clot that he already had was prob dislodged. Move on its nothing.

Is there any mold in your house? If he's allergic & there is, it will only get worse. Try saline nose spray or a Q-tip with Neosporin on it to help with dryness. Any mold in your house could affect little ones, their immune systems just aren't strong enough.
I had this very problem with my daughter.

It could be a combination of things and not necessarily due to a health problem. The weather can play a big part in it and so can his actions. My son gets nose bleeds all the time. He will get one just sitting on the couch or in class-no impact or anything. You can use saline sprays to keep moist. I was told I could put a little vaseline but then told I shouldn't. So much contradictory stuff out there. One thing that has helped a bit in reducing nose bleeds is increasing his vitamin C in the fall and throughout winter.
BTW, my son has a bleeding disorder so he tends to bleed a little longer than a child without so it always seems like he is bleeding a lot (not saying your child has this). It is amazing how much blood a child can have with a scrapped knee or bloody nose, etc.

Is your son anemic? Go get him tested and if he is there are two nutritional cures. Lots of green leafy vegetables or red meat twice a week. Organically grown no matter what you eat. Pesticides on food can ruin the body's red blood cell making capacity for many months.

When the nose bleeds just like any other wound it sometimes scabs, especially if the air is dry. You can use a humidifier for a couple of days see if that helps. If the discharge is green or bright yellow, you might want to make sure he doesn't have a sinus infection, but other than that I would simply use the humidifier and make sure he's drinking enough water.

I'm going to go against the others advice and suggest you take him in to see his doctor. The reason I say that is my son started having nosebleeds and they at first were few and far between. Then they started coming more often. When they started averaging 2 to 3 a week I took him to see his dr. He got referred to an ENT. That dr was great. He looked and saw that the blood vessel in his nose was enlarged and probably was causing the problem of the numerous nose bleeds. Then he noticed some other issues. He cauterized the vessel but it didn't totally fix it so two weeks later to fix the nose bleeds and other issues my son had his tonsils, adenoid and cauterized again. No more nose bleeds.
So take him in to see his dr just to be on the safe side.
