Question About Nosebleeds

My 19 year old daughter who is away at college, is complaining of frequent nosebleeds (at least one a week). She text messaged me this morning that she had one for 45 minutes. I told her to go the clinic, but she had a full class load and said she didn't have time today. She has always had nosebleeds, but this seems a little too often and today's was way too long. Any suggestions? I bought her a vaporizer the last time she was home, but clearly this isn't helping. Does anyone have older children still having issues with nosebleeds and do you have any advice besides the obvious (that she needs to make time to go to the clinic at school)?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

First I want to thank so many people for sharing their stories with me! I was overwhelmed by everyone's kindness and advice. I did have my daugher catch a ride home this weekend and we went in (much to her dismay) to her pediatrician. It was the only doctor who would see me on a Saturday. During her exam, she started to have a nosebleed, and we stayed at the office while they tried a variety of methods to get it to stop. We have been referred to an ENT for cauterization, and hopefully the doctor will be able to see her in the next two weeks. His nurse is to call me back. Her pediatrician did send us to the lab to have several different blood tests run. He wanted to rule out several bleeding disorders, and luckily all came back negative, so that was a relief. He also determined that she had a pretty major sinus infection, and put her on heavy duty antibiotics, so as you can see, the trip home was really worth it on many levels. She is to go to the ER at school if she gets another bloody nose that lasts over 20 minutes before we can get her in to the ENT, and they will have to pack it. She is using the vaporizer & the vasoline, and is hopefully on the road to recovery. Thank you all from the bottom of my heart!

I've had the same problem for several months. Doctor sent me to an Ear, Nose & Throat Doctor to have my nose cauterized. There was a "crimped" blood vessel way inside that was causing the nosebleeds. Just had it done Monday, but hopefully this takes care of them.

My 17 year old son has nose bleeds, but nothing like this. But I do have a college age daughter and I would ask a couple of questions, is she USING the vaporizers? Maybe a nasal spray that would be portable may work better? But, I'd be telling her to get to the clinic. If it is something more serious, you don't want to putz around trying home remedies.

I use to get nosebleeds all the time when I was 18/19 years old. One time I was using a white large bathtowel and when my parents came in the house to see why I hadn't come outside yet, it was totally red!! Called the doctor and went in to see him and they said they could caterize (sp) it. Never had a problem since then.

I had these same type of nosebleeds that would often involve both nostrils for 30-45 mins. I finally went to the doctor in high school and they said I'd grow out of them but did give me some nasal salie drops. I thought I knew the pattern (winter nosebleeds= dehydration) but then in college I got them in the summers too. I never found the drops to be useful but the more relaxed I was when they came on, the less time it took to stop. I have since grown out of them finally at age 26 (and after having 2 children). Another concern to watch for is the large clots that form, especially when both nostrils are involved. I also have (and have had all my life) frequent and severe migraines. Hopefully your daughter doesn't have both! I've been told it's genetic and of course, there's not much to preventing either condition.

I have this problem in the winter mostly. The air is drier of course. I went to my regular doctor, whom wasn't in at the time so I saw his doc in training. She told me that when this happens, to put some Neosporin on a Q-tip and lightly put it inside on all sides of my nose. This is of course for the nostrils and not up inside. I found that this cuts down immensely on my nose bleeds. I dont know if it is from there for your daughter or more inside, but this is my suggestion to at least try:)

A. R,
One of my sons gets nosebleeds quite often but it is usually in the winter months from the dryness. I often forget about using the vaporizer (usually one of my other children need it due to illness, I have 4). Anyway, when we experience a nosebleed, I put a little vasaline in his nose with a Q-tip to moisten things up there. It seems to do the trick. Maybe if she did that every night for a few nights and maybe every other night for a while, it could help.

When I was younger I had nose hemmorages.. they would bleed for hours.. the best advice I can give is vaseline. gross, but it works.. if her nasal passages are dry they are cracking and bleeding, tell her to get a q-tip and roll it around in both sides. Trust me, after doing that a few times she'll goto the doctor!! And if she doesn't, maybe it will help...

When we first moved to Missouri (from Minnesota), my (now) ex-husband used to get nosebleeds all the time. He finally got tired of it and went to the doctor. In his case, he was told it was the difference in altitude and to help remedy it, the doctor suggested taking vasoline on a Q-Tip and lubricating the inside of his nostrils. Not sure it will help in your daughter's case; however, I thought I would throw that idea out there for you to try.

My husband, myself and my oldest son all have had nose bleeds most of our lives. My son at least one everyday for the last 3 years. Our chiropractor dicovered that he had a sublixation in his neck and also some allergies that he has taken care of. We have been nose bleed free since Dr Clarke has been working on all of us. Bryce has not had any in 3 months. The treatments were effecitive immediatly.

Your daughter may be a different source but that may be worth getting check out. I know it's not an idea that jumps out at you, I would have never thought that to be the cause for us.

I hope she gets reliefe soon so she can concentrate on her studies!

My daughter is 8 and she continued to get nose bleeds the doctors said it was from being so dry and to use a nose spray to keep it moist. We've also had to have her nose cortarize because the bleeding continue to often. I suggest try the saline solutions. If that does not work go to a nose and throat doctor. Hope this helps

I agree about going to see an Ear/nos/throut specialist about it. Until then, use a humidifier, and when she has a sudden one (THIS REALLY WORKS!!!!) Have her roll up a small piece of papertowel or tissue and put it between her upper lip and upper front teeth....I don't know WHY this works but it does!!! I have several kids who have sudden massive nosebleeds occationally...

I have hayfever and used to get nose bleeds all the time when I was a kid (sneezing and plowing my nose made to much pressure on the little veins close to the surface). I finally had to have my dr. "burn" the places in my nose so they would stop re-opening and bleeding every time I sneezed.

I would definitely have your daughter go to the clinic soon. It could be something simple to where her nose needs to be cauterized. I would take precaution though. My husband has what is called Olser-Weber-Rendu (http://www.hht.org). He goes through times of having excessive nosebleeds. Since we have been married I have made him go to check-ups for it. I am glad he goes because they corrected abnormalities in his lung. Make sure that she is using the humidifier. My husband sleeps with one on every night.

A., I am a mom of 2 boys age 24 and 21. They both have had nosebleeds since they were little. I, too, was concerned at times. My doctor found a genetic history of them in my family. I don't know if you've looked at that or not. In my kids, the nosebleeds have become less frequent as they got older, but I do notice a change in pattern if they feel stressed about something (good or bad stress), or if the weather's dry. My main concern would probably be the issue of blood loss. It sounds like you've thought about the hydration factor. A humidifier is good (I had one put on our furnace). Have you thought about how much fluid she's taking in? Maybe some Gatorade, Performance, extra water, or such could help. I'm like you, I'd try everything and check with a doctor just to be sure. Hope it helps!

Ann,

Mine did the same thing when I was in college. It turned out to be allergies. If she is on medication, she may need to start shots. This helped me out greatly. I'm no longer on shots after about 3 years and I only take Over the counter meds.

Hi, My name is A.. I am 33 years old and a stay at home mom with three kids. I have had nosebleeds all my life, and my two oldest have them too. They say it is caused by the vessles to close to the skin. Best solutions is a humidifer to keep the air from being dry and to stay away from anything that causes your blood to thin like asprin and chocolate. On really bad ones, gushing for 45min to 1 hour, the ER will "pack" your nose. very uncomfortable but sometimes they just wont stop. This is what helps minimize ours. Hope this helps and good luck.

Have her try using Neilmed Sinus rinse I use the rinse 2 times a day until the nose bleeds stop. Then you can use once every other day or so. I use a warm mist vaporizor also at night when I sleep. I am an adult 49 and have been plaqued with nosebleeds for the last 5 years. I bought the nasal rinse and at last could control the nosebleeds as long as keep using the wash I do not have nosebleeds. you can read about this at www.neilmed.com

I feel your daughters pain. In High School and early college I sruggled with very frequent nose bleeds. Not only were they messy, but because of the inconvenient times they were also embarrassing. First we thought it was allergies, or not enough humidity in the air. When I went to the doctor he informed me that a small vein in my nose had seperated (from sneezing, blowing, dry air, etc.) and I would have to have a small procedure done to "fuse" it back together. I had the procedure done and everything has been wonderful since, I am now 29. The procedure left a black ring around both nostrils for almost a week, but believe me when I say it was worth it! Hope this helps and if you need anymore info please let me know.

All of my children have severe nosebleeds including my college age daughter. If she went away to college like you said then I would say allergies, which is what my children have. Especially with her being in an new area. She should go to a doctor and express her concern over it being allergies and have them treat her for it, see if that happens and at the same time they could eliminate any other major issues. Two or three doctor appointments is better than the time all those nosebleeds take up. By the way, a vaporizer create other problems for one of my daughters(it made her allergies worse, believe it or not!)

Good luck,
D.

I don't have an older child with this problem, but I have a three year old who has been having nosebleeds. The last time this happened I consulted her doctor and was told it is probably allergy related. It is that time of year where allergies are in "full bloom", so maybe that's the problem. Maybe she could try Zyrtec (now can be bought "over the couter"). Not sure if this helps, but if they do continue, she should make some tome to see a doctor just to make sure.
Hope things get better!

I have a daughter who at the time was 15. She had alot of nose bleeds ( at least 2-3 a month) and then in a soccer game she was hit in the nose and it started bleeding and we couldn't stop it for about an hour. I took her to an ear, nose and throat doc and he cauterized it and she has not had a nose bleed in about 3 years. He said her veins in her nose were too close to the surface. I hope this helps you.

Wow everyone gave great advice, I don't have alot to add, except that bleeding for 45 minutes isn't something to just shrug shoulders at and let go. I used to have nosebleeds as a kid, but the worse and (last) one that I had I was 18, it just started bleeding for no reason, lasted about 30 minutes but during that time, I SOAKED my buddy's t-shirt. When I got home I just tossed it into the utility sink, my mother who is an RN about had a fit. She told me that if I hadn't gotten it stopped it could have been very serious. SO, please, please encourage her to get it checked out and follow through with whatever treatment is necessary. A lot of people gave some very good examples here from vaporizers to cauterizing. I hope she can get it under control.

Hello.... I'm 23 and I get the same nosebleeds! It seems to be related to the weather a bit...nose drying out, etc. Sometimes the vaporizer works (cool mist only, though) and a saline solution nasal spray. Anemia may play a role in it also-as in my case. That's why they last so long anyway. As long as she's not getting light headed, dizzy, seeing spots, or getting confused, its probably not (medically) a big deal but it never hurts to see a dr! Checking her iron is just a finger prick test but might help. (Most women this age should have an iron level of 9-12) Hope this helps :)

A., my brothers would take a scrap piece of paper and fold it over to place above his front teeth between the gums and inner upper lips. It worked everytime. Something about pressure on major vessels. But she needs to make an appointment with an ENT doc. She has a problem that needs to be addressed. Full schedule or not.

I am a 32 yr. old mother of 2 children. My intentions by offering my own experience is not to freak you out, but she does need to get to the doctor asap. Although I didn't have nosebleeds growing up, when I was 20 years old, I had several nosebleeds and was eventually diagnosed with Leukemia and that was my only symptom. I now have a son who has frequent nosebleeds, so as you can imagine when it first started I was always freaking out. The doctor told me he has a thin membrane/cartlidge thing that is easily broken to create frequent nosebleeds - so maybe this could possibly be what's going on - either way, like you said, she needs to get to the clinic! Good luck! =)

I think the other suggestions are all good--mine's pretty simple. I wondered, is she getting enough water? With the increased stress from being away from home and a full class load alone, she'll need more. Plus, running from place to place-it dries everything out. People often think they are getting enough water, and aren't even getting close. The average person needs to consume (in ounces) half of the number of their weight in pounds each day just to keep from being dehydrated. If she's in a different climate-say, going from a humid climate to a dry, or a warmer climate to a colder-this can also have raise an issue with hydration. She may also want to consider sleeping with a humidifier-the ones they make without filters now are great. Just make sure she rinses it daily, and washing it thoroughly weekly. Just something to consider. Good luck. I know I would be concerned.
