My Son Has Mites - Update

My son has had what we thought was an allergic reaction to something. He is 20. Didn't mention it to me until it was of course flaming. It was on his arm. I gave him benedryl it just looked like some hives. The redness and itching seemed to go away. So I thought he had just brushed against something in the yard while doing yard work. The next day (no yard work) it had moved to the other arm and the next day was on his back. So yeah something going on. Took him to the clinic who diagnosed it as mites. Said they could be picked up anywhere. Movie theater seats, toilets etc. And unlike lice will travel your whole body to burrow under your skin. My skin is itching just typing this. And that it is highly contagious. Great. Thought I was past the stage of kids bringing bugs home. So now here is my question. We are taking all of his bedding and all of ours because I am a worry wart. To the laundramat to do in a huge washer on hot wash / hot dry setting. I have sprayed the mattress's with lysol but is there something stronger for mites? Do I need to toss the pillows? or will spraying them with lysol take care of it? I am not doing the whole tie up in bags for a week thing. I will worry they are still there. So if lysol won't do it I will toss the pillows. Do I need to do something with his desk chair? the toilet seat? other than the lysol? God this is gross. And can I just say how much time I don't have for this this summer. :(

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

So right after I posted the question I got a lot of great responses. Thanks for all of them. I did the massive cleaning. tackled the debugging even thought we didn't really have a positive that that was what it was. Turns out it wasn't. My son is massivly allergic to gillette sensative skin bath gel. He had used it and each time had the weird bumps / rash itchy. I didn't realize he had changed soaps. But he stopped using it and used the avino and it went away. a couple days ago he used it again as the avino was out and omg he broke out in the hives / rash itching all over his body. So thanks for the info on the mites. Glad it wasn't that.

This webpage has a lot of good info: http://www.idph.state.il.us/envhealth/pcmites.htm

Read the link on this page about scabies. This kind need a prescription medicine. It sounds like lots of vacuuming, cleaning, and keeping the house dry (no humidity) helps to get rid of them. Good luck! That sounds awful. I hope the rest of you do not catch it also...the itching must be maddening.

Good luck in getting rid of them. Lysol gets rid of germs, not bugs. Lysol will have no effect on mites.

Scabies mites? They only survive 2-3 days without a host. It's suggested that everyone in the house uses the treatment cream even if they have no symptoms.

Our local laundromats specifically prohibit washing infested items (lice, mites, bedbugs) among other things that should not be put into public use machines. If you have your own machines, wash and dry your bedding, towels and clothing from the past week at home. The hot settings should be enough. (If you think you can't get it hot enough, do the bag thing after.) Lysol on hard surfaces should be just fine.
