Frantic About Scabies

Has anyone had the unfortunate experience of scabies with their children? I recently watched my nephew who I just learned had scabies and now I am frantic about whether or not my children will end up with this in the next 4-6 weeks. He was only here for about 8-9 hours out of the day but he did wrestle with my son a little. My children are 2 and 4 and I am worried about how intense the treatment might be for them. My pediatrician's nurse said it wasn't necessary to keep him out of school until signs showed. Any experiences or advice might be comforting as I am trying to figure out how I will spend the next 4 to 6 weeks playing the waiting game. Thank you.

So What Happened?

So all of my worry was for nothing. After a long 6 weeks of a somewhat quarantine on my family, the kids were finally able to visit their grandparents and other family. Nothing showed up and I felt really silly. Funny thing though...a week later I get a letter from my child's school saying there are a couple of kids with lice and to keep an eye on that. I think I can handle that though. Thanks so much to all of the advice that was given, most of it really helped me to relax and not be so frantic.

Contact me for some information about some products made with natural ingredients that will get rid of the scabies. The store shelf products contain harsh chemicals that can cause side effects.

Hi N.,
Hi N.,

You might try bathing him with Tea Tree Soap. Dr. Brommers makes a natural Tea Tree soap which you can get in the health food section at many of the Kroger stores. The one on Whitlock Avenue has it. Tea Tree is a natural product that has natural antiviral and antifungal properties. My boys actually participate in a Jr. Wrestling program. This is their second year, and they haven't had problems yet. However, I'm not too familiar with scabies, so talking with a Dr. would be your best bet. Good luck. T..

My child hasn't gotten scabies, but I got it as a teenager. It is highly contagious with skin contact. As far as treatment, I had to wash all of my bedding and towels in very hot water separate from other laundry and I had to use a lotion on my entire body(even between the toes) on 2 occassions and it was gone. The lotion smothers the bugs and they will find any inch of skin that is not covered so that they can breathe(which is why you cannot miss any skin). This was 18 years ago, so treatment may have changed since then, but it wasn't too bad. Once I got the lotion(which was Kwell and I have no bad effects from it), the itching stopped, too. Good luck and hopefully your kids won't have to deal with this!

People are not the primary host for scabies aka sarcoptic mange which is found primarily on dogs. In the off chance that your kids do get it, I wouldn't think treatment is a big deal. It is easily treatable on dogs.

Usually you have to practically sleep in the same bed, use the same towel, or have extended close contact with someone to get scabies. Scabies are mites and they like to get in the webbings or crevices of places on the body like in between fingers and toes or on the back of the knees. I wouldn't worry about it to much, but just check your kids periodically.

When I was a child my best friend had scabies. I never got them nor did anyone in our house, even though she came over all the time and even stayed over night. I don't recall any of her sibling getting them either. As a parent, I really don't understand why my mom let her come over until she was scabie-free, but she did. I do recall looking at her arms as a child and hoping I never got them but we kept playing regardless. I definiately wouldn't take a chance with my kids that way because from what I know it is highly contagious. I hope your family is just as lucky not to get them. It is pretty involved to get rid of them.

honestly, it's not a big deal. I caught it when I slept over at a friends house in high school. Matter of fact, several friends caught it. we just had to bathe with the special stuff that gets rid of them and of course wash clothes and sheets, etc. And then it was history. Of course if you think anyone else was exposed to it, do let them know so your kids don't get "re-infected" with them.
