My 4 year old daughter was herself this morning when i took her to the bus. By the time i got her off the bus a couple hours later she was very tired and has been very sluggish all day. Complaining of pain all over her body. She has a 101.7 fever with no other symptoms. She hasn't been sneezing or coughing or anything so I'm stumped on what may b wrong. Any ideas??
Ps. Children's ibuprofen has been helping slightly but not enough

What can I do next?

The flu often is accompanied by aches and a fever but not necessarily upper respiratory symptoms like cough/sneezing. If she's in pain, keep up with the pain reliever which will also help the fever. You don't need to medicate a low grade fever, but this is close to 102 and she's achy, so by all means keep her comfortable.

Push fluids (water, jello, popsicles, maybe some watered-down juice) and don't worry about food. She needs the liquids more than anything. If she'll eat water-rich foods like watermelon or orange segments, great. Rest and sleep are great. When my kid was sick, I propped him up in front of the TV and put on a movie with the volume not too high. Half the time, he dozed off and then I turned it off. It was easier than fighting to get him in bed, and sleep is sleep.

The flu is usually viral so there's not much to do most of the time. Don't get upset if the doctor doesn't give antibiotics. They may test for strep even though she doesn't complain of a sore throat, and you'll have to wait for that result.

Sometimes we just never know what the name of the disease is, and it can run its course in 24 hours or it may take several days. Just give in to it and please keep her home from school so she doesn't infect everyone else. That's probably how she got it to begin with!

What did your Dr say?

If she has a fever she needs to stay home until she's fever free for 24 hours.

Take her to the doctor.
Where ever our son went to school any temp that was 100 or over meant he had to be fever free (with no medicine to help lower it) for 24 hrs before he went back.
It could be flu - it's going around some colleges already or some other bug.
If she's tired and feverish - she needs rest/sleep, fluids and what ever else can help her be comfortable till she's better.

Sometimes kids get an infection with no other symptoms. Sometimes the symptoms come later. It happens.

Give your doctor's office a call in the morning and ask them for advice. Chances are they will let you know what to do and what to look out for. A 101.7 degree temp is usually considered a low grade fever, but let the doctor make that call.

Likely she just has a bug that's going around. Fluids and sleep will do her good.

You should talk to a doctor. This site has a section called "Ask a Pediatrician", I am not sure but maybe you could try posting your question there too. I hope your daughter feels well soon!!

Usually my kids started out that way - would just suddenly be off/warm/tired/not themselves. Then it would progress to something over the course of a few days.

One of mine was like that last week, and ended up having what sounds like a stuffy nose, but really - no cold. She was warm all weekend, so thankfully, there was no school and she was better in time for Monday.

Keep an eye on it. If you have concerns, call the Dr or take her in if things worsen. Usually they just have to run the course. Diane has good suggestions on how to keep her comfortable.

We were always told to do ibuprofen then tylenol (alternate, but not over medicate) because they aren't the same drug. We only did that when they were obviously in pain and it was a way to keep them medicated fully without the other drug wearing off. Ask the Dr about that next time you talk to them. It was helpful with fevers also.

This is VERY common once kids start school. It's a yearly occurrence here when they all go back. That first month they all come home drained at one point or another.

Hope she feels better soon. As another mom mentioned, there is a part to this site where you can ask a Pediatrician for advice - not sure if she is responding or not, but worth a shot.
