I am a licensed counselor, so I am writing this from a professional perspective. If your husband is admitting to suicidal thoughts, he needs to be assessed right away to make sure that he is not a threat to himself. I would get him into a psychiatrist -not a family doctor - as soon as possible. A psychiatrist is trained in these types of situations and medications much more than a family doctor is. One psychiatrist that I recommend is Dr. Vasavada in Lewisville:###-###-####. He is excellent.
Getting recommendations as to what pill he should take is not very effective, since different meds work for different people. Also, medication can take up to a month to get the full effect, so don't expect it to work immediately.
I would also strongly recommend that your husband get some counseling as well. Studies show that the combination of anti-depressants AND counseling is much more effective in treating depression than meds alone. I currently am working at a non-profit agency in Flower Mound that uses a sliding scale, in case you don't have mental health coverage. My caseload is currently full, but we have very qualified therapists. The place is called Youth & Family Counseling (www.youthandfamilycounseling.com) and our phone number is ###-###-####.
Best of luck to your husband and you. I hope he gets help soon.
