OK girls, the hubby is depressed and slightly OCD. When I say depressed I am talking about long term stuff- like since his teen years. His moods have been dark lately and he has admitted to having suicidal thoughts. He needs medication- and I have no idea where to send him- he will talk to a therapist for an initial diagnosis- but will not agree to therapy sessions as he is very introverted (there are people who have know him for 10 years and still have not managed to have a conversation with my quiet husband.) He absolutely will not speak to a stranger. Can you recommend an antidepressant to start with to try- or a good therapist who is truly FANTASTIC? Please help- I'm lost.
* let me add- about 6 months ago in an effort to avoid meds, he started taking an excellent vitamin pack every day along with St. Johns wart, and added regular (4X/week) work outs at the gym) He's still exhausted, depressd with dark moods, and no libido. I think a pill might help- what do you girls say?

What can I do next?

I am a licensed counselor, so I am writing this from a professional perspective. If your husband is admitting to suicidal thoughts, he needs to be assessed right away to make sure that he is not a threat to himself. I would get him into a psychiatrist -not a family doctor - as soon as possible. A psychiatrist is trained in these types of situations and medications much more than a family doctor is. One psychiatrist that I recommend is Dr. Vasavada in Lewisville:###-###-####. He is excellent.

Getting recommendations as to what pill he should take is not very effective, since different meds work for different people. Also, medication can take up to a month to get the full effect, so don't expect it to work immediately.

I would also strongly recommend that your husband get some counseling as well. Studies show that the combination of anti-depressants AND counseling is much more effective in treating depression than meds alone. I currently am working at a non-profit agency in Flower Mound that uses a sliding scale, in case you don't have mental health coverage. My caseload is currently full, but we have very qualified therapists. The place is called Youth & Family Counseling (www.youthandfamilycounseling.com) and our phone number is ###-###-####.

Best of luck to your husband and you. I hope he gets help soon.

What has really really helped me is taking treatment from Dr. Alex Bekker, a homeopathic doctor in Dallas. He is a MD, but his private practice is that of a homeopathic physician. There is no therapy but a long, long conversation for diagnosis. He has excellent bed side manners and his treatment has helped me significantly.
Before going to him, I read nutrition books and realized that I needed to add cod liver oil, dessicated beef liver, sub-lingual B12 to my system. All that helped too. Earlier than that I went to FEM center and they diagnosed very low levels of Vit D.Hope this helps.

Have him go to your family dr. He needs to tell them what is going on. You may need to go with him.

I suggest Lexapro. Both my husband and my father take this medication. It has made a world of difference. It relieves the anxiety and they are able to function. My husband is SO much better and a much better friend!

My thoughts and prayers are with you!!!!

Hello T.,

Have you thought about chiropractic treatment? and also checking his diet? no artificial sugars, no tylenol, no high fructose corn syrup, no milk products. it's worth try. Do keep looking for other types of help. just one type of treament may not be enough. definitely check his VITAMIN D levels. when was the last time he got a physical? got blood work done? check hormone levels. does he have any food allergies? Well, this is probably enough to get you thinking about a multi-faceted aproach. It's great that he has been exercizing. at sprouts there is also "mood fix" it's a combination of herbal supplements.

The Holinar Group at Medical City Dallas is wonderful.

It sounds like he really does need meds, because he did all the right natural things and you said he's still depressed. Start with a general practioner.... his, if he has one. And tell him, no libido, no desire to do anything, dark thoughts.... and that should trigger a scrip for meds.

Then get him to a psychiatrist!
