Moving from CA to TX

Hello everyone,

My husband got a new job that caused us to relocate to Greenville, TX back in May 2009. We have lived in an apartment since then, and are looking to settle here and buy a home. Does anybody have experience with moving a whole houseload of belongings across the country? We have everything is storage in Central California. I am NOT looking forward to bringing everything out here, though its necessary! We will have to find someone to watch over our 2 year old for a few days, fly out to California, pick up a truck and load it, and then drive 25 hours back. So after paying for the rental truck, the flight for my husband and I, and paying for my friend to watch the baby, how much money is really saved over hiring movers to just pack the truck and drive here? I mean, everything is packed into boxes already in storage, I wonder what it would cost for a full 24' truck? Just wondering if anybody knows. TIA

The upack idea sounds intriguing. I moved here from WA state and it cost about $5 to 6000 to move my things. Be very very careful about who your hire, you need to use a reputable company (I used United and was very pleased), check them out on the internet. I had a friend who went with a cheap company and they held her stuff hosatage until she came up with an extra $1500 than what had been quoted. My one piece of advice would be despite trying to save money on movers, make sure you get one that is respectable and is a part of the BBB. (Better Business Bureau) When I helped move my husband, before we were married, move from Ft. Lauderdale to Dallas he picked the cheapest movers in the yellow pages. BIG MISTAKE. They stole his college national championship rings, all of his college diplomas, several of his guns, artwork, bed, etc. It was a complete nightmare and is STILL a touchy subject for him 5 years later. lol Moral of the story for us is to make sure it's a reputable company, not just a cheap one. (The first red flag went up when they told us to get $1,000 cash out of the ATM and didn't understand why we thought they were crazy for asking) Good luck and welcome to Texas! :)

If you have friends in CA that would be willing to help with the loading - look into Door-to-door moving and storage. They have the containers they drop off and you load, then they bring the containers to your destination and you unpack them on your own time. There's the option to keep them in storage at their location, and the price is reasonable. We used them when we moved from CA to TX. I recommend requesting more containers than you think you'll need - they only charge for the ones you fill - better too many than too few! This way, your hubby can fly out by himself, load the truck with his friends, and then come home. Tell the company the situation and see if they can coordinate with the storage location so that no one is inconvenienced too much. Hope this helps!

Have you looked into this option: http://www.upack.com/ They deliver a tractor trailer to you, you load it, they pick it up and drive it to wherever you're moving, you unpack it, and then they pick it back up when you're done. This is what we did when we moved cross-country, and it was by far the cheapest option we found. Good luck.
