Hello gals! I am newly pregnant with my second child, and haven't had my first appointment yet since finding out with home tests. All day and middle of the night nausea has kicked in (I forgot how much FUN this is!!!!!!) and I would like to try something I heard about, but don't know much about it. Has anyone tried taking vitamin B6 and Unisom to relieve these symptoms? If so, how much and how often of each? I did do the research to know that it is safe.

Any advice would be appreciated- want to travel this weekend without feeling puky :(

What can I do next?

I loved Seabands wrist bands you get at the drugstore! Ugly, but they really worked! I would ask my doctor before taking Unisom if I were you.

My doctor recommended Unisom (doxylamine) with a B6 tablet when I was pregnant with my first and lost 10 lbs. in the first 12 weeks due to constant vomiting. Take 1/2 a Unisom with 25 or 50 mg of B6. I am now 11 weeks pregnant with my second and I am sick sick sick again and have been taking the same dose every night at bed time and again in the afternoon when I put my son down for his nap. I came up with this schedule because when I first start taking the Unisom even half a pill makes me sleepy, so I would only take it when I could lie down. I've adjusted and could now take it whenever, but this is working for me, so I'm sticking with it.
Good luck to you, I hope this helps!

For the daytime nausea, I found that chewing gum worked great! Not sure why, but as soon as I felt like I had to throw up, I'd grab a piece of gum and the nausea would lessen or go away.

I'm freaky about meds when I'm pregnant so I wouldn't take the Unisom and I'd ask the doc before taking the B6.

I was green around the gills all day and into the evening with my second. What really helped was small Lemonheads candy or tiny bites of the ginger that you get with sushi. I'd buy a small container at the grocery store where they sold the sushi.

I've had the worst morning sickness with both of my pregnancies and vitamin B6, saltines, peppermint, ginger, etc... don't work on severe morning sickness. I went to my OB and told her to suggest something which subside my sickness. She advised me no to morning sickness tea that really helped instantly and ended up my sickness.

The first trimester is actually the most critical for the development of organs and brain/nervous system. I wouldn't take the unisome--unnecessary medication & chemicals during this critical time.

Heck yah!!! This was the ONLY thing that worked for me. It relaxes your digestive system and helps you sleep. I used Unisom almost every night during pregnancy to help me sleep. Make sure to get the one in the pill form-no caplets or gel tabs-they are not the same. "Pretty" sure that I would split it in half and use only half per night. Hopefully someone else can clarify the dosage. I can't remember how much B6 I used-after a while I stopped with it.

I took the b6, not sure how much, but it helped. Ginger (crystalized) helped, preggie pops- you can buy these at Motherhood Maternity, saltine crackers by your bed and ginger ale all really help. Congrats!

Hi,
I had nausea all day the first trimester. After trying everything (ginger, tea, ginger pills, other chews, etc...), the only thing that worked was wearing the motion sickness wristbands. A true miracle. I got them cheap at Walgreens I think. They weren't cute (look like little wrist sweatbands) but they sure worked. It was fall though so I could wear long sleeves and no one saw them. I think you can get better looking ones other places, maybe even ones that look like bracelets. :) Good Luck!

I tried the B6. It didn't do anything for me. Mint and ginger (mostly teas) and saltine crackers were all I could keep down for the first 15 weeks of my first pregnancy (fortunately, my second was a lot easier!) so you could try that. I personally take as few medications as possible while pregnant (I have terrible allergies, so that medication has to stay, even though I hate to use it) so I never tried the Unisom, but I would be reluctant to take a sleeping pill during the day because being pregnant makes you soooo tired as it is. I would call your doctor to check in. Good luck.

I used Preggie Pop Drops or Preggie Pops to get through the nausea I was having all evening. It's the ginger in them that helps. Also, ginger flavored Altoids are supposed to help. I didn't have any nausea with my first baby and this time around, it hit me early and all in the evening. Not fun so I know how you feel! I got mine at Babies R Us, but Motherhood also has them and I'm sure other maternity clothing stores do as well. Feel better!

Not sure why you would ever take a sleeping pill while pregnant, and I am really shocked that a doctor would even recommend it. I don't care how "safe" the ingredients are, it is a SLEEPING PILL!

Crystallized ginger to nibble on is good or Yogi ginger tea is really good for nausea. You can also try peppermint tea or just buy peppermint oil and put a few drops in a glass of water.

Prenatal vitamins have extra B6 for this very reason! Not sure about the unisom thought.
Have you tried Preggo Pops or Preggo Drops? They work! If you don't want to spend the money, ANY sour candy will work. Jolly Rancher even has sugar free sour hard candies so you don't have to worry about all the sugar on your teeth!

I had HG with all mine (my girls were worse and it was worse in my 20's). Ginger helped (ginger root and ginger ale with real ginger in it like Hansens.) Drinking lots of water helped too. If it threw up, I would drink more. I had to be on home IV's with one of them and they had me not drinking by mouth. That was torture! Never again... water is best! Good luck and congratulations!!

Unisom, I can't imagine that being safe for your baby, especially at this stage, when cells are dividing....no matter what your doctor says, everyone's level of "safe" is different.

I am pregnant with my 4th baby and I can tell you I have used Standard Process Linum B6 with each pregnancy. If I was too nauseous to take it in the am, I would take 1-3 before bed and I'd wake in the am without nausea.

My friends have all taken it and within 24 hours are fine or at least significantly better. It's a flax-based B vitamin, so it stays in your system longer. I've also taken sublingual B6 from Thorne and it worked immediately.

Good luck!

B6 is a great option. It is in you prenatal vits, but you can take the extra pill which should help with the nausea. Also the Preggy Pop Drops are supposed to be really good as well! I was told by a doctor to use Unisom, but really you won't be able to function... because you'll want to just sleep. It was on the list of drugs that were safe for use during the first tri, but you would really need to talk to your OB before you would take them. I wouldn't recomend it for a few reasons, you'll be very tired and it is a drug/medication- which I would just avoid unless they need to be used as a last resort. I had HG (Hyperemesis Gravidarum- extream morning sickness) so I was using Zofran along with home IV treatments. If my babies life and my own life were not in danger I would have avoided all use of drug. Hope you have a yuck free weekend... and congrats!
