We have an ipad and my 6 year old desperately wants Minecraft. Her friends at daycare have it and she loves the building things part.

I'm inclined to let her get it, but I don't know anything about it. Which one is the main one to buy? How do I make sure that she can't interact with anyone else? Is it an option of single or multi player or do I need to change settings or something?

Thanks! I'm not super hip to all the cool stuff kids do these days. :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks, ladies! I'd pretty much made up my mind to get it for her, I just want to make sure she can play it without interacting with strangers on the internet.

My son says there is a peaceful Minecraft to play where all you do is build on a computer. For mobile devices, if you place the setting at "0", then she will only build. This is a setting of the game, not a version. He says that the main mode is single player so she could play without interacting with other players.
She can also just play in creative mode and build whatever they want without having to get their own resources.

Think of a big, electronic, lego set. This is what Minecraft is. My 7 year old loves it. He plays on creative mode, and is always working on his 'world' - a house, building all the furniture to go in the house, a hotel with a pool with waterslides. Recently he decided to add an art museum to the 1st floor of the hotel (I have no idea where he gets these ideas, but it is very creative).

It is $6.99 - my son plays it on an ipod, but it's the same as the ipad version.

Kids can interact on it online. But only on survival mode. If she sticks with creative mode on the game, she can't interact. And if you left the WiFi connection off, of course she couldn't connect at all - and she can still play with all the features with the WiFi off, once it is downloaded.

"Creative Mode" on Minecraft... is the one where you can build things up to you.
The "Survival" mode as well. But this one is per obtaining objects in order to "survive." ie: you need the cows for meat. You need trees to get wood to build a fire, etc.
It is 2 different things.

On each platform, it is different.
ie: Xbox, on the computer, on an iPad, Playstation, etc.
But the concept is the same. And the things you can do.

It is basically, a game made of big pixels. It looks like colored blocks formed into shapes. Using those pixel blocks, the user, creates things. Their own worlds etc. Adults, even, play it and make things as sophisticated as a replica of the great Egyptian pyramids, or architectural structures like Frank Lloyd Wright homes or hotels etc.
It is, amazing.

There is a private school in my State, which even has a MineCraft club and their own servers.

There is MUCH to learn, on it. It is endless.
My son , plays it and is pretty expert at it. We all play it. So do our friends.

Each person, will be able to create things, per their learning curve about the game... and its use.

Yes, multi-players can play it, when you are online, and have that capability or paid for it.
Or you can play it by yourself.

MANY adults, and kids of all ages play it.
It is, very creative.... and its scope is endless.
And for some, it is addictive.
It is not a dumb, game.
And it is not a finite game.

My son, on his own, DESIGNS, many complex things on it. Not objects... but he designs....objectives. ie: how to get the Creepers or animals... on a certain path, in order to trigger... a trigger to then, catch them. And he designs the triggers and paths and anything else he thinks of. It is a real thinking outside-the-box, game.
There is no one solution, to it.
And its purpose, is up to the person's imagination.
And its design.
And it is very, challenging.
It is both creativity, and problem solving.
And its scope, is per the person's imagination and ideas.

There is much to learn, on it. And about it.
As a parent, you should play it too.
If you get it.

Look it up online and research it.
Learn about it and what its about.
Then decide, if... you get it for your daughter.

We have it, on the iPad, the Xbox and on our Mac computer.
It is all different, not exactly the same, per say.

I see you got the answers you want. My husband created a server for our son to play Minecraft on and we invited a few of his friends to join. There are no strangers. So, now they can interact with each other and they have the best time together. They build things together. They joke around and do funny things like have snowball fights. So, if one day your daughter is begging to play with a friend you can look into this.

Our kids play Minecraft with my hubby. They enjoy the heck out of it.

One kiddo likes to build and decorate. The other one only wants to play the other part of the game.

It can be violent but the kids just really treat it like virtual Lego's.

Enjoy! My 7 year old son LOVES minecraft. He plays mostly in creative mode but survival mode is pretty cool. There's a lot to learn in both modes. I like that in survival mode, they have to think ahead...like if you use all of your cows for meat, then you don't have any left to make leather, so you can't have boots, and without boots, you can't do...whatever. Or that you have to have wood to put a door on your house, and if you don't put a door on your house, you might not survive your first night because the animals will come in. Or what it takes to make a torch, so you have some light. My 9 year old likes the challenge of survival mode more than my 7 year old.

My 7 year old likes to make us all houses and show off the things that really make each house *ours* - so my houses always have lots of light, and flowers and grass inside, and a spa, and next to my spa is always a bookcase, and some cake. My husband's houses always feature a man-cave with a big TV, and a bed because he likes to sleep. It's pretty funny.

Anyway...enjoy watching her master this - it really is a great game!

Both of my boys have been playing Minecraft for a couple of years now. They build all kinds of things in Creative, have farms and livestock in Survival, and generally love it. It's like Lego without the excruciating pain when stepped on. We have the iPod/pad version and the X-Box version.

My kids love love love all things mine craft. I think the full real version for the tablet was like 7 or 8 dollars. They also play on their xbox. They love to play alone, but they can also link with each other over our wifi.
