L.P.
I have a TempurPedic mattress - my grandmother bought one and HATED it, so she gave it to me - lucky me! - because I LOVE IT!!! It is the most comfortable mattress I've ever slept on. Mine did not have any smell, but my grandmother did have it for a couple months before giving it to me, so it's possible it did, but the smell just dissipated before I got it. It does seem to hold in heat more so than a typical mattress, which is good if you are typically cold, or if you keep your house cool, but if you are a sweaty or hot sleeper, this could get on your nerves. It is different than a regular spring mattress in that (duh!) there is no spring to it. That might seem like the Mr. Obvious statement of the year, but I say that because it does make getting out of the bed a little harder, believe it or not. My mom slept in my bed a couple times, and complained how hard it is for her to get out of (she has back problems) because of the total lack of spring or bounce to the bed. I do recognize that it does require you to use all your own strength, as opposed to getting a little spring from the mattress to get up, but for me, that's not a problem, and after a day or so, you don't even notice it anymore. I only mention it in case you or anyone who will be sleeping in the bed has back or neck problems. As for comfort, I find it to be absolutely the most wonderful thing in the world. My mom recently bought a high end latex mattress, and personally, I don't even like it as much as mine. It's really a personal preference, if you like the memory foam feel, then I think you'd enjoy having one. But I'd definitely suggest you spend ample time trying it out in the store to get a feel for whether you find that type of mattress comfortable.
