We've had a Sleep Number for about 5 years now. I'm not extremely happy with it for a few reasons, so wouldn't recommend it.
Hi Mamas.
I am doing a little bit of "internet" research on mattresses. We are considering either a tempurpedic or a sleep number bed. Do you have one or the other? What do you like? What do you not like? Do you have any basis for comparison (i.e. you have tried both)?
I have heard tempuredic beds are "warm". Also, are going to a sleep-number bed show room, they now have a "cool-gel" tempurpedic on their air support system. anyone have one of those yet?
Just curious. We have not made any decisions yet and are still comparison shopping so no ruch, yet...
Thanks Mamas!

LOVE our Tempurpedic! We've had it 3-4 years now.
I heard that too about sleeping 'warm'. I can tell you I am very hot blooded and I can't say I was any warmer on this than our previous mattress.
We tried out the sleep number bed, and in my opinion, it's nothing more than a camping air mattress. Plus in the King size there is a big baffle thingy in the middle because it's 2 mattresses pushed together.
I've slept on both. I have major back problems and have had surgery. The sleep number bed did NOTHING for me and I couldn't get comfortable. I spent a very comfortable night on a tempurpedic bed at a B&B. I woke up feeling wonderful. I would consider it for my next mattress for sure. PS - I couldn't imagine having sex on the sleep number bed - there is no give or bounce to it. My sister had one for a few years and got rid of it.
We bought our basic Tempurpedic 11 years ago. Hubby liked firm beds and I grew up with a latex so we had lots to argue about when we moved out of the city and were ready to buy a king size bed. We both LOVE the Tempurpedic, so much that when we go away, if not sleeping on a high end luxury bed, wake up in pain and cant wait to go home to our bed. Now that all being said, it is a little warmer than a regular bed if you keep your room above 70 degrees but I think the new ones have ridges for cooling. Personally I like to slip into a bed that the sheets don't feel freezing. The one and only one downside to the bed, as it molds to your body and there is no bounce, there is no bounce. Sex on the bed is not easy. On a regular spring mattress you get a little spring back, on this its a dead stop! Also, we find, who ever is on top, the wrists sink into the mattress and you loose some support. SO...when the opportunity arises we hit the guest room bed for some action! Sorry for the TMI but I told the same thing to my MIL and her new hubby, and that info right there was enough for them to pass on the tempurpedic. They got the Sleep Number and say it is just alright and the Tempurpedic bed is better for sleeping.
We have a Sleep Number and HATE it!! It's just a glorified air mattress and would never recommend it to anyone. I seriously wish we never bought it. We laid on it a few times in the store and they seemed better, and got the one we tried in the store, but when it arrived it was sooo different and awful. Now it's too late to give it back and we are stuck with an expensive air mattress bed. Ugh. Wasted $1,000
So no Sleep Number!
Hi C.,
We have a tempurpedic and absolutely love it !! We had a pillow top before and I was waking up with my back stiff etc. The moment we got this mattreess I have not had pain since.
I have an off-brand Temper type bed. I LOVE it. Check Amazon...they have some amazing deals and some great reviews.
Next time I go mattress shopping it's going to be a firm talalay latex mattress.
They are pricey, but I've tried a few and they are the most comfortable for me.
I know people who're returned the temperpedic mattresses - too squishy, too warm - they felt like they were trying to sleep on quick sand and it didn't suit them.
I've tried a sleep number bed and despite trying multiple settings I still woke up with an aching back.
I also know some people who are quite happy with tempurpedic or Sleep Number.
You've got to find what is comfortable for you.
have had our temperpedic for a year now and LOVE it...they said it could take a few weeks to get used to, but i thought it was great right away...there are lots of different versions of the temperpedics now, with varying firmness levels, and varying thickness...ours is one of the upper "models", the rhapsody, and it's not too firm or squishy, which i wouldn't be able to handle. smell went away after a couple weeks. some of the best $ i've ever spent. bed shopping is hard!
I've slept on both and prefer the tempurpedic. the sleep number bed is just a padded air bed. the tempurpedic can sleep a little hot, but not terrible. Another thing that bothered me in the beginning was the chemical smell of the tempurpedic, but that went away. They are very expensive though. In the future, I would probably just go with a really comfy regular mattress.
Temperpedic!! We tried the Sleep Number--glorified air mattress! No good!!
I laughed when I saw this post. We just got rid of our sleep number and bought a temperpedic. My husband couldn't be happier. He hated our sleep number bed. We used to have a memory foam pad on it and a feather bed on it as well and it still wasn't as comfortable as the temperpedic. They feel firm when you first lay on them- which I was hesitant about but it's so comfy. As for being warm, I can see that. I have noticed that I am a little warmer at night but nothing crazy. Get the temperpedic. You will be much happier.
Stay away from the sleep number!!! I bought one not only for myself, but at the time for my sister, my parents and my in-laws. I thought it was the greatest thing at first. In the end, everyone hated it!! They start off fine but eventually, if there are two of you on it, the middle will sink in and you'll get that little slope that will be very uncomfortable. In the beginning, I made my bed really soft- that's the whole point, that you can adjust it to be comfortable, right? Wrong!! After a little while, my back started hurting so bad that I needed to see a chiropractor! I didn't even think it was the bed but when I mentioned it to him, he was like- oh no, you need a firm mattress to sleep or it will ruin your back! So really, what's the point of making a bed softer if it's just going to do more damage? After that I always kept it firm, but then we began to have the problem that I mentioned about the middle of the bed sinking in. They'll tell you at the store it doesn't do that, but take it from someone who had one- it does! Happened to everyone I bought the bed for. I haven't tried the tempurpedic so I don't know about that one. I eventually got rid of my sleep number and just use a regular mattress and I love it!
Thumbs down for sleep number. Bodies tend to roll to the center of the bed if you both don't have the same sleep number.
Before we got married hubby had a tempurpedic bed. He loved his mattress, I hated it. I could never get comfortable on that thing. Essentially I had to be exhausted in order to fall asleep and stay asleep but woke up feeling slightly beat up but again he loved it.
I had a water bed mattress which I loved at first but then became just a huge head ache. We started our marriage on that. We were leaning towards getting the sleep number bed because you can adjust the firmness of the mattress and since we already have the water bed boxspring we would only need the mattress itself saving us tons of money. However we go another conventional mattress which is too firm for either of us.
We live with it because we have other things to toss our money at for now and two of our 3 boys start college this year. Yeah???!!!???
Only God knows what we will do in the future but we are still leaning towards the sleep number if our numbers are closer in similarity. I like that I can change the firmness.
