We have a Serta Perfect Sleeper Northstar Royale pillowtop mattress that we bought pretty cheap at Sam's Club about 8 years ago. We love it!
We are in need of a new mattress. Was wondering if anyone as a Tempurapedic or Sleep Number? We are leaning towards a Tempurapedic but want to make the right decision since it is a big investment.

SLEEP NUMBER! Lets just say my husband & I have diffent ideas of firmness when I come to a bed. So I slept on the couch for 2+ yrs til we could afford a new one. Last fall we baught the sleep # bed. It Rocks! He has his side hard as a rock, and I snuggle into my squishy side. I Recommend it to anyone!
SLEEP NUMBER SLEEP NUMBER SLEEP NUMBER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have ALWAYS had back problems, even since high school, and we bought a sleep number bed about 5 years ago. Best investment we ever made. I have ZERO back issues now! The one thing I do recommend though is NOT getting the wireless remotes. Get the wired because they can really interfere with other electronics in the house, and for a long time we were having parts replaced because we thought the bed wasn't working properly. Ever since we got the wired though, no issues at all!
I've slept on a Tempurpedic and HATED it! In the summer the foam was so HOT! I would sweat bullets. And it smelled funny. I always felt like I was trapped in the bed. It's super hard to roll over and I really missed the bounce of a regular mattress. I know they're suppose to be better for your back though. I have an aunt that has one and she LOVES it! It's a matter of personal opinion, just thought I'd pass along my personal story.
We love love love our sleep number bed!! That was our first big purchase when we got married and that was 10 years ago. I used to have headaches every single day, but ever since we got that bed, I think my headaches are down about 95%. Plus it is great if you strain your back, you can make it more firm until you are back to normal and then make it more soft. My number is usually 35 and my husbands is about 50. No conventional mattress would have been able to please us both. Don't know about the other brand. I would be afraid that the foam involved might break down after several years of use.
We have a temperpedic and LOVE it. When I was pregnant with baby #2 I had trouble sleeping (as do most women) but knew we needed a new mattress. When we tried the temperpedic I did not want to get off it. I am a light sleeper, but now I don't wake up when my husband comes to bed late because I don't feel him get into bed and I am, finally, sound asleep. It gets a little warm during the summer and I know they are expensive, but well worth the money.
My husband and I bought a Sleep Number couple of years ago and we love it, still! We had previously slept on waterbeds for years and were nervous about finding another mattress that we would like as well. Its great because we can each change our settings to what we like at that moment. It has a great warranty (couldn't find one that good on any other mattress) and you don't feel like you get wedged into the foam mattress, or sweat as much (which is a bonus if you're ever pregnant). The feature I like the most is that it is light weight and folds up to almost nothing for moving or rearranging your room, which is something we could never do with a waterbed, yuck!! You can also unzip the mattress and clean out the inside with vaccuum or wipe of air bladders to try to keep clean, another bonus with allergies. Can't dothat with other mattresses. They also have 30 day money back guarantee to check it out first. Good Luck!
Love, love, love our sleep number!! If you want to make it feel more deluxe, just get a cushy mattress pad cover--I wouldn't recommend the sheets from the Sleep Number store, they feel soft, but the fabric pills after a couple months--don't buy them, any sheets will fit the mattress, even though their's are made "special" and they will try to talk you into it! I tried the memory foam pillow from there, and it drove me crazy, so I don't know how a Tempurpedic mattress would be, but I agree with someone else who said it smells funny and makes you sweat. Anyway, hope that helps you decide! BTW, you have a month to try your sleep number and decide if you like it, they will charge you for the delivery but refund the rest of your $$$ if you hate it =-)
we absolutely LOVE our waterbed mattress!
there are days when I am so sore from working through out the day - that I look forward to getting into that waterbed - it really helps 99% of the time! I wake up renewed.
We have the semiwaveless - got it at sleepy hollow sleep shop.

My husband and i just recently did the same thing. Please check out BED in a Box .com (no spaces). We have just gotten the bamboo foam matress for way less than what t tempurapedic bed. We took our time looking and I have not bee happier with our bed. We did alot of research before purchasing and read many comments on each kind of bed. We have had this bed for about 3 weeks and my hubby and I both love this bed. Good Luck!
Hi B..
I have a Tempurapedic, and I LOVE it!
We have a sleep number and what I like about it is that you are able to adjust according to your bodys needs. For instance when you are out working in the yard and you're really sore.We tend to be warm when we sleep, and the tempurpedic seemed as if that would make us warmer than we already are.I don't know if this helps. We love our Sleep number bed.
We have the equivalent of the Tempurpedic but it is called TempSoma and we bought it at Sam's Club two years ago and are still in love with it. My husband and I were just talking about how we could never go back to the old type of mattress. Plus it was less than half the cost of a Tempurpedic being at Sam's.
We have had a sleep number bed for four years. And several of our friends have purchased one from the results we have had. They also love theirs. It is a big expense but has been worth every penny.
The company has also been great to work with. My brother had to replace a part of the base to his bed that had cracked after 6 years. They replaced it at no cost to him. No questions asked.
Hi B.,
We bought the Tempurpedic last year and absolutely LOVE IT.
I had 2 children in one calendar year (preggo now with my 3rd) and after my second I would get out of bed and literally feel like I needed a cane to walk to the bathroom.
Also, I had cesarians and I had horrible joint pain that vanished soon after we got the mattress - don't know if related or not but the salesman claimed it was great for joint pain.
My hubby also says it has helped his back so much...
We were so hesitant to spend $3,500.00 on a bed.... and we were MISSERABLE, pain wise and poor sleep.
I can tell you that it was worth every penny.
Sleep is so important and good rest is so needed.
I have always been insomniac, I wake up easily and have a hard time going back to sleep and this bed has made my long nights much better. I love laying on my back, it just relaxes my back like nothing else, especially pregnant.
Anyway, I just can't recommend it enough
We've had 2 sleep # beds (upgraded from queen to king) would never buy another type of mattress. Super comfortable, adjustable for different firmness preferences, and good warranty. Our first got a leak (7 years ago) and the co. sent a new part no questions asked. I've heard not so good things about the tempurapedic but no personal experience.
My husband and I have a Therapedic, which has memory foam, but still feels more like a real mattress. It is also substantially cheaper than a Temperpedic. We both love our bed. I often forget how nice it is until we sleep in another bed somewhere. I can never wait to get back to my own bed. If cost is an issue, I'd recommend trying a few other memory foam matresses. I think some stores will even give you up to 4 months to try the matress and return it if you don't like it. One thing about the memory foam, though. Our matress only has a life span of like 15 years. When you're spending thousands of dollars on a bed, that is definitely something to consider!
My in-laws have a variation of the sleep number bed. They love it. I slept on it once, and didn't like it. It could be that I just wasn't able to find the right setting, though.
I had one aunt and uncle that bought tempurapedic and just hated it. He said that it is difficult to roll over on, gets to warm, and is difficult to get up. Another aunt and uncle got the sleep number bed and they just love it. I laid down on it and hello HEAVEN! It was very comfortable. We recently bought a serta and love it. Course since my hubby is more comfortable and sleeps better it is harder to get him to roll over when the snoring gets to loud. haha Well good luck with your purchase and sweet dreams! Shannon
My husband used to travel with his job and I would go with him when I could, so that's the only time we slept on number beds. I hated it, he didn't notice much difference. As far as tempurapedic, I can't spend the money. My husband had major back surgery about 4 years ago and had major pain before the surgery. When his pain started we went to the mattress factory on RT4 and got the top of the line orthopedic, he enjoys it everyday! We wouldn't go anywhere else for the price!
A couple of years ago we went on vacation at our timeshare. When I sat on the bed, I thought, "Man, this is the hardest mattress I have ever felt. This is going to be a long week."
I couldn't have been more wrong. It was a Tempurpedic mattress, and that is the best week's sleep I have had in my life.
Now, all I have to do is get one for my house. (Still saving!!)
I also have had a tempurpedic for the last few years and absolutely love it. I do think there was a transition period but I notice no one else has mentioned that. It's so different from a normal bed that it took both my husband and I a couple of weeks to really feel like we loved it!
My baby seemed to take such great naps on it, we ended up buying the mattress topper for his crib!! And it is wonderful when you're pregnant (conforms to body shape) or just trying to get in and out of bed with out waking your spouse!
Hi B.,
There are alot of mattresses out there and I encourage you to take your time. Like you said,"It's a big investment".
We looked about for some time before finding our mattress, one we both agreed upon. I did not care for Temperpedic and I loved the Sleep-Number,but they both can be very pricey. We finally went with an all latex bed from the Original Mattress Factory and we're loving it.
So make sure you look around and if possible go natural as much as you can...Dormia seems to be a eco- friendly business as was The Original Factory.

Our mattress is maybe 14 years old. It was a relatively high end mattress back in its day and was used for 10 years. It's comfortable to me but hard on my husband's back. Last year we added 3" of memory foam to it and topped that with a baffle box featherbed (alternative). I'm partial to a soft bed and this combo makes it really hard to want to get out of bed at all. My husband's back seems to do better too.
We just got a Tempurpedic. I was totally against it! From the stories I heard, I thought we should get a Sleep number. When I layed on the Sleep number.... It was like I was out Camping or laying on a water bed. Yes you can adjust the firmness, but if you do not like it very firm and try to get up - IT CRAZY! It only took me trying to get up from the bed to agree with my husband.
Now, I will tell you that I HATED this mattress at first! I kept telling myself that I would give it 2 months and if I still didn't like it we would get something different. From talking to people and reading different blogs, I found out that I had to give it 30 nights and I would feel differently about the Tempurapedic. It's not even been 30 days, and I sleep GREAT!!! Now I was not around when we paid for the thing and I saw the price the other day while doing some cleaning. Yes, it was more than what I would pay for a normal mattress, but well worth it. The warrantee it self is great. I totally believe it is worth the money.
Happy Shopping!
Hi B., I can't speak for the Tempurapedic mattress but I CAN speak for the Sleep Number bed. My husband and I have had our Sleep Number bed almost 5 years and would NOT trade it for anything. Because we can adjust the firmness or softness on our own side of the bed we never get a bad nights sleep ~ at least not from the bed. It is great to adjust your side of the bed according to the way your body feels each night. If I ever have to buy another bed it will be another Sleep Number. Another great advantage is that it is very easy to change sheets (not one of my favorite things to do) because it is very light weight since it is filled with air. Good Luck ~ S. C.
Some advice just dont buy it at MATTRESS MART reguardless of what kind that U buy as I spent almost $ 1000.00 on a matress and springs there and SUPPOSED to have a 15 year warranty and after 30 DAYS I realized the mattress was not any good and have been trying since last June of 07 to get some kind of warranty and NOTHING !!!! so just some advice be careful as them salesmen make everything sound soo good L.
We have a Sleep Number and my husband loves it. He used to have sleeping problems before we got the mattress but ow he sleeps great. Now for me it is nice. I have always had sleeping problems as well and now that I have 2 kids under the age of 3 I don't sleep long because of every little noise I think it is the kids. The 4 to 5 hours I do get though is good. I also have one great pillow to go with it. Good luck in your choice.
Each person is different. You and your hubby need to go into a store and compare them side by side. We found the people at Original Mattress Factory to be honest and unbiased offering Temperpedic and a variety of pillowtop, etc. We thought we wanted a Temperpedic, but it is hard to get out of if you have pain, pregnancy or other issues and it holds in body heat - not good for guys who sweat or gals going through menopause! We decided on twin Ortho pillowtop, so that we don't disturb each other's sleep... and we can still cuddle and get together because we have a kingsize platform bed (used to be waterbed, then pillowtop king). Your daughter will love trying out all the beds in the store.
We have had a tempurapedic mattress for a couple of yrs. now. The good thing about it is we don't wake each other up when we move or get in or out of bed. The bad thing is, after awhile, we have noticed that there are dents on each of our sides where we sleep, but in the middle it is still firm. It is still under warranty, so we may see if we can get it replaced, but it would probably do the same thing again after awhile...
We had a tempurapedic and we were very VERY unhappy with it. After a few months, it created "ditches" on both sides of the bed with a big hump in the middle. We had to get a sleep number bed because of my back pain. We atcually just got a zero gravity bed (which is like sleep number) and so far it has been WONDERFUL. I know what a big investment this is...good luck to you!
Hi B.! I don't have the Tempurapedic, but we have the mattress topper, and I love it! My aunt has that bed and loves it as well!
We have a Comfortpedic ( like Tempurapedic) and it is worth very penny!
