Temperpedic or Sleep Number

We have had a sleep number bed for over 7 years and still love it. My husband has back issues and it has really helped; it is still just as comfortable as when we got it. We did have a minor issue w/ a leaking air tube on one side, but they replaced that for free and it has been at least 5 years since then w/out a problem. I get what people have been saying about the slight ridge in the middle, but I am not a cuddle sleeper and like my own space, so it is not a problem for us, and it is not noticeable when the bed is made.

My in-laws have a sleep number bed and I HATE IT. It used to be in their bedroom, but now, sadly it's in the guest bedroom (I guess they didn't like it either) so we have to sleep on it every time we visit. I can't cuddle with my husband at all because of the big ridge down the middle.

I asked this question a few months ago. We found a memory foam mattress on Walmart.com and had a king sized, 13" mattress shipped to the store and it fit in the back of the SUV. (They fold it in half and roll it up.) We got it for $630 after taxes! We thought, for that price it was worth trying. SO GLAD WE DID!

LOVE IT! I did find one review that said it was better than the Tempurpedic mattress and yet so much more affordable. I can't compare exactly, but it is awesome. It did "stink" for a few days, but we bought it back before we could open our windows (too cold out). The smell is normal and went away pretty quickly. We didn't jump on it or knead it like you are supposed to, and it was fine. We've had the 3 year old jump on it, though!

We put ours over our other box springs, but will consider getting rid of those when we move and just use the mattress on a platform bed. Very versatile. (We put our old mattress on Craigslist for free and it was gone in a day).

Our 3 1/2 year old wouldn't sleep in her own bed after she slept in our bed a few nights. We are moving and will get her a memory foam mattress when we get to our new house.

Thought I'd give you another option. :)

My brother has a sleep number and loves it. The first couple of nights he said he didn't sleep well, but after he got his number figured out he was in good shape.
I need a new mattress but with college tuittion to pay it wasn't in my budget, so I bought a memory foam topper (like a thinner version of the temperpedic) and I LOVE it. I have slept a million times better since I got it. The one thing I did notice is the one I got retains heat some which was great in the winter, but I use a fan in the bedroom when it's warmer. (We have AC but I don't want to freeze everyone else out just because I am a little warm.)
I have heard great things about both, so it may just come down to persoanl preference. I would ask about the life span of each mattress and compare that. Then I would just go in and test a few out and see what feels the best to you and your hubby.

We have a sleep number...i hate it :-) In my opinion its only good for back sleepers. I sleep in all different positions and bc of that sometime I have a little stress on my neck or lower back if the bed is too soft. I change it btw 35 & 50. The lower number means softer and higher is firmer. We purchased the limited edition bed. The sleep number sales person said it is like the 4000, well it's not. My mother in law has both beds and i must say I think I like the tempurpedic better, HOWEVER a pillowtop sleepnumber bed may be worth a try. (my husband does not like pillowtop) Hopefully you can get an opinion on a pillowtop sleep number. Have a great day!

Had a Sleep Number bed, returned it. Only bought it due to pregnancy and it made me so uncomfortable. My husband hated it too; he could never find a perfect sleep, plus that hard section in the middle made cuddling non-existent. We returned it and got our $6,000 refunded. (Couldn't believe the Sleep Number bed was just a blow up mattress with a plastic frame.)The Temperpedic made me break out in hives and cold sweats. The same happened to my other friends. We just went and bought a nice expensive mattress; no problems and have been loving it for 3 years. In the end, do what is best for you and your spouse.

My hubby and I bought a Sleep Number bed a few years ago and we both love it! After we got it I was mad that we didn't have it while I was pregnant because it really would have helped with my back pain. Hubby likes his side a little firm and I like my side a little softer. I sleep on my back, side and occasionally my stomach and it's comfortable no matter what. Having this bed has also greatly reduced visits to my chiropractor. We spent quite a bit of money on our old innerspring mattress and we had it for 9 1/2 years and that was about 3 years too long. I also love that I can't hardly feel my husband moving around in bed now. Before, I could feel the bed move every time he took a breath.

My inlaws' just bought a Sleep Number bed and they love it too.

I love my Sleep Number bed! My husband and I have different ideas of what a comfortable mattress firmness is so with the Sleep Number we each get the perfect bed for us. Also I like it because I can change the firmness depending on how I feel that night and it was wonderful when I was pregnant and had different comfort needs. Another nice thing about Sleep Number versus Temperpedic is the weight. Sleep numbers are really light since they are essentially like an air bed whereas Temperpedics are very dense and heavy.
The ONLY thing I don't like about my Sleep Number is that, because my hubby and I have such different numbers, (my side is very firm - 90 and his is closer to 60) there is a bit of a valley between our two sides so when we are meeting mid-way for snuggling there is a drop-off between my side and his. That is a benefit though to keeping our 4-year-old out of our bed and in her own! :)

I have one of the original sleep number beds and guess what? It is still as good as 15 years ago. Air does not wear out. Mine is before they had pillow tops, so I have added a thin memory form pad on top. (the topper does wear out and needs to replaced periodically.)

I love it. Originally we got it because my husband and I could not agree on a mattress and this bed had adjustable sides so we could both have what we wanted.

I have a friend who spent a fortune on a Sleep Number king sized bed. The bed is actually split down the middle so that each person can have their own control and decide their own sleep number. The problem is that one side ends up taller than the other unless they are on the same number and there ends up being a ridge between the two sides. She said it wasn't comfortable and she and her husband couldn't snuggle - they ended up returning it b/c they were miserable. I don't have a Tempurpedic but I do have a thick memory foam topper on our bed b/c my DH likes a softer bed while I like a firmer one. The memory foam feels soft yet supportive - I don't know how to describe it - definitely give it a try if you can. We love, love, love memory foam (every bed in our house - including my son's crib now has a memory foam topper)!

Great question - DH and I planned on buying a Sleep Number bed for years. We ended up researching, and got one with a pillow top. It was in the mid-price range. We do NOT like it at all. It definitely feels like an air bed. Plus, DH is a large guy, and by the time he sets his number it sags by the next morning. When I go to make the bed, his side has stretched to the side and ... well, sags when I make the bed. It doesn't keep its shape. We're no more comfortable on it than our original regular mattress. While it may work for others, we can't stand it. Just my two cents. Good luck and let us know what you end up with. Despite having ours for a year, we're ready for something new. Sad, considering how expensive it was. =(

I've slept on Temperpedic beds at my sister's and daughter's and found it to be VERY hard and did not provide a good night's sleep. It would probably be fine for a back sleeper, which I am not. I'd take your sleep positions into account before making any final decisions.

Ok we just bought a Temperpedic and my husband loves it but me, not so much. I find that I am just a sore with the new bed as I was to old one. I do however notice that I go to sleep more quickly because I am more comfortable, it just hasn't helped with the pain yet. If I had to do it over I would get a sleep number.

Oh as an edit: With temperpedic you have to break them in....no I am not being dirty. You actually have to jump on them to help break it in. Seriously the first night was like sleeping on concrete. Also if you get one it has a funny smell to it that takes a while to go away. We opened up the windows and let that go. It was still stinky so I put dryer sheets between the mattress and the sheets and that seemed to help

i have a tempurpedic and i LOVE it. i don't have any experience with a sleep number bed, but my mom does and said she could never get warm sleeping on it.

I have a sleep number -- for 5 years now. I LOVE it. Hubby's side is hard, mine is softer. When I was preggo I could make it hard so I could roll out of it in the morning, but when I was laying down I could adjust it to just the right pressure for me right at that moment. It was fantastic and still is.
The only thing with a sleep number bed is that you will need to check/adjust the air pressure in them from time to time. But that takes about 30 seconds, so it really isn't a bother.
Oh, and one other great thing about the sleep number bed -- you can make it really firm for better bedroom extracurricular activities. :o

Tempurpedic ALL THE WAY. This mattress will last you 15 years and by the end of the next 15 you won't be saying URGH!! This mattress is amazing I would seriously give up all my nice tvs, purses.. whatever i had to just to keep it. Once you try it you will never want to sleep on a normal mattress again!

I have a sleep number and I LOVE it!! Rachel below said that there's a problem with the ridge, but that's only if you and your husbands sleep numbers are significantly different. A friend of mine has a sleep number and her number is 60 while his is 30 so they have trouble with the ridge. I would check out what your sleep numbers are before making a decision anyway. We don't have a problem because our sleep numbers are similar. We were between the two as well, but I went and tried out the Tempurpedic and it was too stiff for me. My mom had the same problem and ended up sending it back to the store. If you like a firm bed I'm sure it's fine, but I'm obviously not. I (jokingly of course) told my husband that if he divorced me I get the bed ;)
