If money is really an issue, then consider going to bed bath and beyond first and look to see if there is a memory foam topper on sale. I have a fairly normal pillow top mattress. Then I add a 1.5 inch memory foam topper and on top of that, just a regular thinner mattress topper that looks much like a quilt. Combined, I love my mattress and I only have about 450 in the whole set. Mattresses are so personal, so hard to find, and so expensive!

I just bought the Sealy version called "Embody", very similar to Tempurpedic with same 20 year warranty, much less money at MATTRESS FIRM. 100 day trial on any of their beds and some have 1 to 3 years no interest.
They also do not require you to buy the box if you already have one to put the mattress on, (saves money).
Some of their stores have a "clearance" section, however, don't think the same warranty applies on the clearance merchandise.

We bought a king sized 13" memory foam mattress from Walmart.com It was $629 after tax (if I remember correctly) and shipped to the store. It was folded in half and then rolled up. The box fit in the back of an SUV easily.

We've had it for 1 year and LOVE it. We put it on our old box springs (which are really just boxes). We could just put it on a platform, too. We like the height, so have kept the box springs in place.

We've since bought a 10" queen sized one for our 4 year old daughter. We put directly on the slats (Ikea bed). She loves her's too. I think it was around $250.

Just bought memory foam topper from Walmart. Queen size was 100. 4 1/2 inch its wonderful. I can not tell the difference between that and the actual mattress.

Well.......I love my Tempurpedic so my advice would be to go out and buy a fairly cheap matress and then Tempurpedic's 6 inch deep memory foam matress topper, decide if the cost of a full matress would be worth it and then save for it. I don't know about generic, but Tempurpedic has a 1/4 inch sag warrenty that's good for at least 10 years, so if the foam fails you and starts to sag more that a quarter (maybe even an eighth) of an inch, they will replace it!

We got the Sealy Island Bay Memory Foam for our Queen. Its..... ok I wish we would have just paid the extra thou for the Tempurpedic. my husband loves it. I am bigger and heavier, and when I sleep on my side it hurts occasionally I can feel the base underneath. If I am on my back where I am suppose to be its fine.

we bought a new matteress and box spring for appx $700 and then added the costco memory foam on top and it is wonderful ! Can't go back now and every other bed feels un-pleasant.... hotels are hard to go too now that we finally have comfort. When we get the money, I want to buy my girls one for their twin next.
