Low Basal Temps/hypothryoidism

Have had my thyroid levels tested several times due to various reasons; results always normal. Have not had thyroid antibodies tested though. Been tracking fertility signs using guidelines from TCOYF. (Had to take clomid with first 2 pregnancies, hoping to avoid that this time). MOrning temps (with a good night's sleep) are running in the upper 96's. and I have always had LONG, fluctuating cycles which include long stretches of creamy cervical fluid (apparently classic signs of hypothyroidism). Anyone out there experience this and try vitamin supplements (book recommends A, B, C, and E, zinc and something else, after consultation with MD of course)? Just curious. I have found the MDs in our OB clinic to be resistive to the method of tracking things (much to my frustration) so I'm looking to arm myself with some more research....

What can I do next?

Different docs have different definitions of what is normal, thyroid-wise.

Have you had a full thyroid panel run (not just TSH, but thyroid hormone themselves, free T3 & free T4)?

I would also pursue testing for anti-thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO & anti-Tg).

The AACE recommends that doctor's consider treatment for anyone with a TSH above 3.0mIU/L, http://www.aace.com/public/awareness/tam/2004/tsh.php ,
in part because the NACB has said "In the future, it is likely that the upper limit of the serum TSH euthyroid reference range will be reduced to 2.5 mIU/L because >95% of rigorously screened normal euthyroid volunteers have serum TSH values between 0.4 and 2.5 mIU/L."

Mary Shomon has written some good books for understanding thyroid disease.

I had issues with my thyroid. I knew something was wrong, but my test kept coming back in normal ranges. I finally went to a fertility care specialist that used Naprotechnology created by Dr. Hilgers. In the end I went to see Dr. Hilgers himself and he found that while my T3 and T4 fell within normal ranges, the ratio of on to the other was off. I required more T3 for the amount of T4 in my body. I would recommend finding a Doc affiliated with Dr. Hilgers. He teaches Doctors all over the world. Just google Dr. Thomas Hilgers and on his sight there is a doc. finder.

My BBT would be from 94.9-96.4 at the most, Crazy i never thought someone could have such low temperature and yes my thermometers all 6 that I tried worked just fine. My blood work always seems to come back fine, I have tried lots of different things to get it better but it just seems to be me. I get pregnant just fine with the low temperatures though. I only run around 97 at most when pregnant also.

I gave up on TCOYF after just a couple months because I am like you almost identical in fact. I have infertility of unkown cause, low body temps,45-70 day cycles, and normal thyroid and hormone tests. I didn't ovulate regularly even with taking daily prenatals for a year, but maybe that dose wasn't enough. Due to another issue with my tubes(I only have one), I've had to use IVF to get pregnant but the 3 beautiful children make it worthwhile.

I have very low Basil temps as well. On a good day they are about 96 degrees. I also have a short lutial phase. But I have 3 soon to be 4 children. I have really good luck taking a Vit B complex.
Good Luck, K.

I agree with Dawn. Mary Shomon's books are great, and I would totally recommend making sure your doctor is doing a complete thyroid panel and using the most current levels (they changed what was considered "ideal" a few years ago). Some docs are still using outdated info.
It took me 2 years to get pg with our son. After he was born, I had a ton of issues with my thyroid (hypo) and was put on Synthroid and Armour Thyroid. We got pregnant with #2 the first time we tried this time, so I suspect that was my issue the first time, though my doctors felt a TSH of 7 was fine (now it's kept around 1)!
I would see an endocrinologist, just to be sure, and let them run the tests.

Good luck to you!
