Our library is hosting a "Stranger Danger" program in a couple of weeks. Our local police will be handling the main presentation. As our library director, I will be reading the children a short story (Never Talk to Strangers by Irma Joyce) and would like to find a song that is simple and catchy that I can sing with the kids. I haven't found much information on the web regarding this program. I have contacted our state police, but they are not able to help me in the direction of a song. I have found some coloring pages online that I can print off as well as a handout for the parents. Anyone know of a good song that teaches about strangers? Any other suggestions? Thank you!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

After reading the posts, we changed the focus to: never go anywhere with a stranger and never go up to a stranger without your mommy or daddy or other "safe side" adult, with you. The program was geared towards preschool-kindergarten age. I borrowed the Safe Side DVD and will be purchasing that for our library. I learned some new things through that. I checked into Barney and Sesame Street, but didn't find what I wanted in a song, so I made one up. My four year old has been singing it, so I take that as a good sign. We used McGruff the dog for our coloring pages. Thanks so much for your insight and help. Made me think twice about the direction we were going in. Was able to change the focus so as not to terrify the children. Thank you!!!!!

I am not sure how old the kids are you will be having the program for but my 4 yr old LOVES the Safe Side Stranger Safety DVD made by John Walsh and Julie Clark,(creator of Baby Einstein)It is not scary and not in any way offensive. Here is their web site http://www.thesafeside.com I bougth mine off Amazon which turned out to be cheaper then Ebay or this site...they have a version for teachers as well. Good luck we all want our kids to be safe!

Check with the Sesame Street line. They had one that was pretty good.

Have you checked with CPA or Crime Prevention Association, they have the mascot McGruff the Crime dog. They would probably have some information.

I would think that Barney would have a song. My son who is now 16 was really into Barney, but I don't remember any specific songs. But their tunes are usually catchy. I would look there.

I agree with Barb F. My son has always been a social butterfly and I was concerned he wouldn't know who to be careful around and who he could trust if he needed someone. The Safe Side DVD was very kid friendly and puts everything in terms they can understand. Not to mention the humor and the music video. My son had the song stuck in his head for weeks. I don't feel it the video itself sends mixed messages to kids, but helps them understand why we need to think smart when around someone you don't know. Hope this helps.

I just had to add my 2 cents on this topic. I feel strongly that we send mixed messages to children by telling them to Never "Talk" to Strangers. Every day they see us talk to strangers, so they think that strangers are scary-looking monster types. We talk to people in the grocery store, gas station, restaurant, etc. The real message should be NEVER GO ANYWHERE WITH A STRANGER! That's something we don't usually do and kids could understand.

I have read a couple of great books by Gavin de Becker on the subject, including The Gift of Fear and Protecting the Gift. He really opened my eyes on how we confuse our children and don't give them the skills needed to help protect themselves.

Hope this helps!
