My 6 month old son was born with an undescended testicle. We saw a urologist who said that in all liklihood if it hasn't descended by now it probably will not. He is going to take another look at it at age 1 and if still has not descended he will recommended surgery to bring it down. shoule I be worried?

What can I do next?

My son had an undescended testicle also, that did not descend on its own, so around age two, he had to have surgery. Everything went well and we haven't looked back. He had a bit of a hernia that they found when they went in, so they fixed that too.
Don't worry too much. I know it's hard when its your baby and doctors are messing with their parts, but it is important to take care of it, so as not to cause potential infertility later in life.
Everything will be OK.

My oldest had this we waited til just over a year and then he did have surgery. We went to Childrens Memorial and he did fine. I was told its ok to wait until age 1. I was also informed not to wait much longer because it can cause other issues. Good Luck!!

My son had this to. It never came down. At 10 mos he had surgery and it never developed. So he only was born with one. Not a big deal. He can still have children with one. My brother did! Don't worry! It's normal!
Mom to four great kids!

hi Carmen,
My son was 6 weeks premature and had an undescended testicle as well. We had to wait till he was officially 6 months to get it fixed and we did. We had Dr. Hatch out of Children's Memorial and Loyola do it. It wasn't bad and our son was just a bit crabby for a couple days. You would never know he had it done now though. Our doctor pretty much siad that if it doesn't descend on it's own by 6 months, it won't. But don't worry. It wasn't that bad and once it's over, you won't deal with it anymore. Like i said, our son was fine and it was much better than i had expected.

Hi Carmen,
My son was also born with an undescended testicle and our urologist took care of it when he was 9 months. He said if it didn't come down on its own by 6 mos. it probably wouldn't and wanted it taken care of between 9mos and 1 year. We had it done in the morning and by the time we brought him home in the early afternoon he was wiggling out of our arms to get to the floor to crawl and play.
Our doctor assured us that there wouldn't be any higher health risk if the testicle wasn't brought down than if it were, but in the event your son does develop any issues, with it still inside, the issue would go undetected. So, for future checkups, we wanted to get it taken care of. I hope this helps.

My son was born with an undescended testicle too. It did not come down and he had to have surgery. We waited until he was 7 years old. We went to Dr. Houston (Childrens Memorial Hospital). He is a pediatric uroligist. It was same-day surgery; we were home within 5 hours.
I recommend getting a second opinion. There is really no hurry with a surgery like this so you have time!
Good luck!

I wouldn't be too worried even is he has to have surgey. My son had a double hernia. At a year and a half he had to go in for surgey to close both holes. It was over in an hour and he was out of the hospital the same day. I would think it would be pretty much the same thing. His testicles were slipping into the open hole and wouldn't drop back down. He would turn blue down there. When they finally realized he wouldn't grow out of it they did the surgery along w/a recircumsion and he was still out in a half of day. It took a few days of recovery, but a 6 months later he's doing great.

Hi Carmen,

Please don't be concerned about this operation. My son who is now 8 yrs. old needed the same. It is more common than we think. It was simple and my son recovered very quickly with no complications. The operation is necessary, you can't leave them up there. Relax and know that you are doing what is necessary for your childs physical well being.

My brother had this same problem when he was younger. He had the surgery, but was probably 2 1/2-3 years old when he had it done. I remember he had gotten sick from the anesthesia and was sore from the stitches. Everything went fine though. And that was 18 years ago. I don't think you should be worried.

I would probably get it fixed as soon as possible. I have a friend who's son had this problem and his pediatric surgeon fixed it when he was 8 months old. He did really well. I wouldn't be worried at this point. Just listen to your urologist and maybe get a second opinion. It wouldn't hurt to seek another doctors advise. Dr Gundeti at the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital is great and he is also a pediatric urologist.

My daughter has to have tear duct surgery, and I've been a mess about the anesthesia. I've talked to everyone I know about it and have been given wonderful assurances about the safety of the hospital we chose and the procedure. One of the moms I talked to told me that her son went through the exact same procedure that your son may have ahead of him, and she said it went very well. One thing I would do if I didn't have to have this surgery right away (my daughter's vision is being affected, so I have to move fast) is to get another opinion. I tried to get in at Children's, but the doctors were booked out several months. Since you have some time, maybe you could find another doctor just for a second opinion and another perspective. Good luck to you. I'm still scared about my baby going under anesthesia, but the reassurances of the other moms whose kids have gone through it have been really helpful and calming. It's important to have the problem fixed, and you're doing the right thing for your son. The other thing to remember is that you still have six months! Don't worry too much. Hopefully it will correct itself.
