A.P.
This happened to my son. I wanted to wait to see if the testicle would descend on its own--some do. His didn't--I think the research I read at the time (2 years ago) said that, if it didn't descend by somewhere around 6 months, it was unlikely to descend. I believe the increase in cancer comes if you leave it longer than around 9 months. We had the surgery after consulting with a pediatric urologist--my son was between 7 and 8 months old. I was really nervous, but felt better doing it then rather than any earlier. The surgery was fast and uncomplicated, and they kept us informed throughout as to how the surgery was going, and we were able to go into recovery with him and wait for him to wake up. Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions. Good luck!
