Looking for Advice on Computer Repair

My computer has started to freeze up and just generally run slower than usual. Does anyone have any idea how much it costs to just have someone come out and see if it's broken or just getting old? It's a 3 or 4 year old iMAC.

What can I do next?

My husband has a degree in fixing computer and he usually charges any where from 50 - 90 an hour depending on what the problem is. I can ask him and see if he would give me an idea of what might be wrong with your computer.

I am not sure how much or who to refer, however if you are on the internet you could have picked up a virus. If so you need a anti virus software program that can locate it and put it in quarantine. The damage may or may not be fixable.

For repair, try finding a local computer training school that is willing to have students work for donations. Universities may have this program or private schools.

R.'s Husband Robert--Good luck, computers can be frustrating. We have two children ages 3 and 6.

I would call the Apple store in La Cantera to see if they could assist you in some way. There might be a diagnostic program you could install. also they might be able to give your mac a tune-up. Mac computers tend to last a very long time, and 3-4 years is not long enough at all, that's like a regular PC. Good luck!

Have you tried to defrag or check disk lately (go to my computer and right click on c: scroll down to properties/click, select tools tab)? You can also clean disk(go to my computer and right click on c: scroll down to properties/click and hit disk cleanup). If this does not help try using spybot, Ad-aware, and/or an antivirus software like Norton Antivirus. You'll have to restart to your computer to see if these fixes correct the problem. You also may need to reduce the number of programs running on your computer at once.

Kerr - I used to know a couple of different guys at different times who would come out to your house and work on your computer, but don't now. I've had good computer work done at ALLGEN COMPUTER WAREHOUSE that is located over off of IH-10--going west take the De Zavala exit and do a U-turn and stay on the feeder road. Note the bowling ally/ice-skating rink on the right--ALLGEN is in BACK of there. The problem is that they'll likely end up keeping your computer for 3-5 days...but they'll do a good job and they are priced reasonably.
In the meantime, if I can just get ONE piece of business done on that 2nd computer of ours, you can have it for as long as you need it. D.
