Looking for a New OB/GYN, Maybe Dr. Nancy Afr?

Okay, so it's time for me to find a new OB/GYN. My last OB/GYN was okay - I liked her as a Gyn, but when it came time for her to switch roles and become by Ob, I did not like her AT ALL. I don't want to see her anymore and I've been looking for a new OB/GYN. I'd prefer a female doc, 30-50 yrs old, who has children of her own and speaks English as a first language. I would like a doc who is willing to listen to my questions and concerns and is willing to teach me and work with me to find the best options as opposed to cirumventing dialogue in efforts to make me do what they want me to do because they think they know what's best just because they're the doc, or worse yet, always plays the "neutral" card because it's the safest way to go (read: no malpractice suit if they don't give info or opinion).

I've been reading up on Dr. Nancy Afr who works for Urbana Obstetrics and Gynecology on Crooks Road in Rochester Hills. Do any of you moms see her or have experience with her? What's your opinion of her?

What can I do next?

I see Dr. Kathleen Huston with Generations Ob/Gyn in Birmingham. There are 6 doctors in the practice - 3 male, 3 female. I really like Dr. Huston as well as Dr. McClosky (another female in the group). I've seen Dr. Huston as both an OB and a Gyn but I've seen all 6 in the practice in the Ob capacity (they had me see all of them for my prenatal visits because any one of them could have delivered my daughter). Dr. Huston is pretty straight and to the point which I prefer (but it's not for everyone) but at the same time, she's not harsh or anything like that. Dr. McCloskey seems to take a more gentle approach if you prefer this type of bedside manner. The thing I've really liked about them is that they always present me with all of my options and let me decide how I want to proceed with things. And they take plenty of time with their patients.

Hi Christina,
Dr. Nancy Afr was my Doc, however when I delivered she was just coming back from maternity leave herself. She did not deliver my baby, but I would have loved to have her for the job. She is a wonderful caring doctor who really does listen and many of my friends go to her. Her office had all female docs and I imagine it still does. I strongly recommend her. Good Luck! E.

I don't know of any in that area, but the group I go to has WONDERFUL OB/GYN's. They are a part of Advantage Health (St. Mary's Healthcare) in Grand Rapids. Dr. Patel, Dr. Zylstra, and Dr. Anderson are the female doctors and they are great, especially Dr. Patel! I actually see on of the male docs, Dr. Turke, and he is awesome.

I second the rec for Dr. Charfoos. She is with Michigan Women's Health Institute. There is another doc there that would fit your wants as well -- Dr. Joanne Goldberg. I have been really happy with the entire practice (just had a baby in September).

My daughter and I love our gyn/ob. I was trying to see her Dr. (Dr. Selzer) but she wasn't taking new patients at the time. She was having a baby! I had to have a pab smear so I let them give me the first available Dr. in the suite. That was Dr. Robert Long. (He and Dr. Selzer are husband and wife!) I love him! At the time I was going through breast cancer treatment and he was a great help! Last year Dr. Selzer delivered my granddaughter but Dr. Long was there as the alternate (on call) I really liked my last gyn/ob and the Beaumont Birthing Center is named after him! But I really love Dr. Long. I'm not sure how many Dr.s are in the practice and they are located in Troy off of Coolidge and Big Beaver.

My OB/GYN is the BEST!!!! I wish I could go to her for everything!
OAKLAND MACOMB OBSTETRICS AND GYNOCOLOGY. They are just off of M-59 and Dequindre (near Troy Beaumont. I live in Birmingham but have no problem going to Troy to see her or to have my babies. I highly recommend Dr. Wallace. She is a tiny little thing and looks very young but she is older than she looks. She is so sweet but very professional! She makes you want to invite her over or go out to a movie. All of the other docs there are also wonderful!!! THey also have nurse midwives in the office if you would prefer to go that way.

Their office runs like a well oiled machine. Wait times are minimal. THey also have ultrasound in their office.

They are the best!!!!

Oh, I should also mention that Dr. Wallace just had a baby and I think she is off until March. Now she has two kids.

Ok, I know you said you wanted a female Dr., but, Dr. Daniel Greene at Contemporary Obstetrics on University in Rochester is great. Although I am not a patient of his, I teach childbirth education and have had many opportunities to meet with him and also meet Moms who have sung his praises. Also, please consider taking childbirth classes with me in Rochester! www.YourPeacefulBirthing.com

Hi Christina,

I went to Dr. Nancy Afr for about four years. She was okay as a gyno but I switched after I had a miscarriage because she was a little cold with me about it. Maybe that seems a little extreme on my part, but that was my first experience with a failed pregnancy and she just didn't seem to have the bedside manner that was reassuring to me. I switched to Patrica Scane who is completely the opposite. She recently moved offices and is now with Henry Ford Hospital but I'll follow her anywhere. She's warm and straightforward and I feel like I'm talking to a friend. But I also know that everyone is different so I'm obviously only speaking for myself. Others may have different experiences with Dr. Afr. Hope that helps and good luck.

Dr. Afr is a great choice. I have been seeing her since 2001 and wouldn't switch doctors if I was paid. She has seen me through the birth of two children and was fantastic. She is up to date, easy to talk to, gentle and has young children of her own. Good luck on your search, but in my opinion you already have a great choice.

If you prefer a female OBGYN, consider Meghan Looby. She is affiliated with Metro Hospital. I became pregnant chortly after moving to GR and knew no one. I, unfortunatly, lost that baby. When I got pregnant a 2nd time I decided to have a fresh start and currently go to Dr. Joseph Talcott. He is also affiliated with Metro. I am pregnant for a 3rd time and am going with him again. I will warn you, he is mouthy, sarcastic and always running late. But, he explained things and took me seriously.

Good luck!

Try Dr. April Sarvis. Her # is ###-###-####. She is an awesome ob/gyn. She is affilated with Beaumont and is partnered with Dr. Bartholomew (not sure about spelling) who has been rankend as one of the best ob/gyn's in the metro detroit area. As a team they are awesome doctors. I see Dr. Sarvis and I know about 12 other females (close friends and collegues) that have her as their doctor also. Everyone I know that meets her raves about her. Very caring and takes time to listen to her patients.

I also prefer to see a women OBGYN.

I go to Oakland-Macomb OBGYN on South Blvd. & Dequindre. I actually see the midwives though. I would strongly recommend seeing a midwife. They are just as educated as the doctors and they have amazing bedside manner. They'll sit and talk with you for 20 minutes at your appointments. They really seem to care!

I've also met most of the doctors in that practice. Dr. Wallace is younger (late 20's?) and Dr.Stark is middle-aged. They are both female. I actually like the male doctors in the practice too (which is a surprise for me!). Dr.McBride & Dr.Love are great.

Christina -

I see Dr. Afr's former partner, Dr. Anna Bida-Dudun. I saw Dr. Afr a couple of times during my pregnancy. I wasn't very impressed. Dr. B. is her FORMER partner for a reason. When they opened the new Rochester Hills clinic, Dr. Afr became very focused on the "improvement" side of the practice. I'm sure you know that they do laser hair removal and other things. Dr. B. had no interest in the "extras" and they went their separate ways. I love, love, love Dr. B. and highly recommend her. Her office isn't as "glitzy" now, but she's incredibly warm and caring, both my husband and I just adore her approach and she meets all your criteria. She's in Troy - ###-###-####.

Dr. Afr is a very slick marketer. I see her ads all the time and the clinic is lovely, but she's spread herself very thin with all she's trying to do now. The "one stop shop" approach really turned me off. I'd advise you to look elsewhere to get personal, focused OB care. Regards, L.

I go to Oakland Macomb OB/Gyn. The practice is located in the Well Pointe Building just in front of Beaumont Hosptial. I liked every single dr. in the practice. I primarily see Dr. Wallace (female) and Dr. Stark delivered my daughter (female). I loved Dr. Vallice and Dr. Love as well...both are male. This is a very caring practice and I always felt my questions were answered.

Please Christina

Donot go to that Urbana center and Dr Nancy. I had so much problem 2 years ago. On my 36 th month they tried to change my doctor (my doctor left the center and they were not disclosing it to me). Luckily I could track my old doctor. Dr Nancy may be good but I didn't like her center managed it. There are some good doctors on Big beaver ( Dr Moherek, Dr Anabindun Dun). They are ladies. They did my OB operation.
This was a very traumatic experience for me so I don't want anyone to suffer. Mrs Sengupta

Dr. Afr is my ob/gyn and she's great! I used to see another lady in Bloomfield but I couldn't stand the rude staff and not so great doc. Dr. Afr delivered my first child and now I'm seeing her for baby #2. I don't see a problem with her having the extra stuff in her office, actually I think it's a convenience for some people. Additionally, her patients are her first priority and you feel that when you are with her. She takes her time and never rushes you.
