Looking for a Good Church to Become Members To

I am 24 years old and didn't grow up in the church atmosphere. I have a 7 yr old daughter and want to start attending a church. I have found myself in situations where I know I can make better decisions in my parenting skills. I raise my little girl by myself and know we both need God in our lives on a regular bases. Are there any churches you attend or recommend? I would like a Christian church and is it weird to say I would like it to be a Latino church or should it matter? We live in the Garland area off of Zion, so any churches close to that area would be great. Also being new to a church would people judge me or wonder who I am or would they make me feel uncomfortable? I know those might be stupid questions to some, I am sure it has to do with my guilt for not already attending one. Thanks for your time.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,

We would love to have you come our church in Garland. It is located at Jupiter Rd. and Collins Blvd. Concordia Christian Church. It is a great place to go to bring your daughter. We have wonderful director of Christian Education and Caraway Street (Children Church Program) My kids love(d) it! I have a 14, 11 & 8 year old.

It is also a warm group of people who will welcome you with open arms. When we moved to Texas we looked at alot of churches and just loved the atmosphere and how the poeple there really made us feel welcome and part of the family.

Check out the website at www.concordiatx.org

Pastor Ken is a great guy too!

Currently, Lake Pointe has campuses in Rockwall, Mesquite, North Garland (Firewheel), Sulphur Springs, Royse City, Dallas and at Dawson State Prison. Lake Pointe has 14 services on 7 separate campuses.

Much more information is available at www.lakepointe.org

Lake Pointe's purpose is "Sharing Christ - Building Believers." Our structure, programs and decisions are based upon this simple, yet far-reaching, mission statement.

On June 17, 1979, twenty people gathered in what had been an abandoned bait shop on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard. They had a vision to worship God and to share His great news with the surrounding community through authentic worship, teaching and committed relationships. The church has steadily grown and thrived because people continue to be transformed by God's love, and have found in Lake Pointe.

My husband and I were not raised in church either and have grown in Christ at Lakepointe Church. You will not be disappointed! There is so much available be sure to check out the website.

M.,
While I don't live or attend church in Garland, I wanted to tell you that I think you are such an awesome mom for wanting to teach your daughter about Jesus- and you're right, accepting Christ will help you with your daily struggles. It won't mean that life will be perfect, just a lot more tolerable! Any way, my sis-in-law and brother have 3 children and they attend Lakepointe in Mesquite. It's close to Town East Mall- they have an AWESOME kids ministry and they're very diverse. And, if you ever attend a church and feel like they are judging you, find somewhere else to visit. All churches are not like that and you will find one eventually that makes you feel at home. Good luck!

Hey M.,

I did not grow up in the church either. It is not like I never attended my Grandparents did take us. Long story! In short my mother is Athiest. Ok enough said. Taking the journey of faith in Christ (thanks to my husband) I found helped me in many ways; not only parenting. We have tried a BUNCH of different churches through our traveles. We found that we enjoyed the Episcopal/Anglican church the best. There is a Latin church over at Saint Barnabas on Shiloh Rd. I see that they are a VERY active church. We chose to attend a church over in Rockwall/Heath. Good luck on your journey. It is worth it!

People go to church not because they are perfect, but because they recognize they are imperfect. It may seem as if people have it all together, but they don't. Whatever church you decide to join, make sure that you don't go just once and decide you don't fit. Look online and find a church with a single mothers class. Also, make sure to attend a small group Bible study. That is where you really see that no one has it all together and you really start to get to know people. We are all working toward one goal...Christ. We also all have something in common at church-we recognize that we aren't perfect and that we need Christ. It doesn't matter what church you attend whether it is a Latino church or not, make sure you attend enough times and really give it a chance. It may seem difficult at first, you may seem like you don't fit in or have insecurities, but know these are feelings from evil trying to keep you away from good! I admire your courage for wanting to do better for your daughter in a world that doesn't encourage that at all. Try Broadway Church of Christ, Saturn Road Church of Christ or Farmers Branch Church of Christ (although it is a little farther, it is a FANTASTIC church with a young, vibrant minister and an uplifting Sat. night worship).

Locating a church home is a very personal thing. That said, my husband and I attend King of Glory lutheran church at 635 at Preston. It is a large congregation with a lot of programs for people of all ages. The things that we were most impressed with when we began attending were the childrens' education program and how welcoming the congregation was. Good luck locating a church home.

Father, My sister is searching for a supportive community of beleivers. I ask that you would direct her to where she will belong. I ask that you would open the hearts of those in that church family to her and her daughter. I pray that you would protect her and that body of believers so that some real relationships can grow from their meeting one another. I know how it feels to be alone and I have experienced the difference friends who love you can make. Please Father, place M. right where she needs to go. Answer her fears and give her a sense of belonging where you want her. In Jesus name-

I live in Terrell and our church is amazing and diverse. There are Latinos here as well as African Americans and even some with various Asian heritages. I have a good friend who's family is from Hawaii. Some who attend were once members of Episcopal churches, Catholic churches, and others. Our church is First Baptist so it's a pretty unique meeting of the minds sometimes! So please go and be open where ever you feel led without reservation. God is a very loving Father who wants his Princesses to find where they belong and where they will fit and be appreciated. Just the hunger to know Him more tells me that you will totally absolutely bless some church and man do I wish it was ours! I will keep praying for you girls. Let me know how it works!
