Light Bleeding

I have been experiencing this in the past month... On and off VERY light vaginal bleeding (not enough to use up a panti-liner).

Just some info about me: I "skipped" my last period. I put that in quotation marks because I am VERY irregular. My husband got a vasectomy last year, and has been tested since and he's entirely sterile. I gave birth 10 months ago and got my first period since then 5 months later and have had 3 periods altogether. It isn't from sex. At first I thought it was then noticed that it didn't always happen after intercourse and it just happened again and we haven't had intercourse for a few days now. I don't use tampons, either.

Now, I am quite aware that you all are not medical professionals (maybe a few of you are, though), but I'm wondering if anyone has any clue what may be happening. OR more importantly- has this happened to one of you and what was the outcome?!?!? I'm a bit worried. I have no medical insurance and also have lost my job- also JUST bought a house that requires A LOT of tlc. In other words we are VERY short on money for me to go to a doctor. I'm calling a nurse from the office tomorrow to see if they can say anything to me. They've helped me a lot in the past (heck, they delivered 3 of my four daughters!)....

anyone have any clue??? I looked up online and all I could find was the answer was cancer! Just more info- I have NO other "symptoms", just the light bleeding (lasts for a day and then repeats itself about a week later...)

THANKS! and I hope someone has something "reassuring" to say... Also, I don't need anyone to recommend me to go to the doctor. I will definitely go if it doesn't stop and/or I haven't found out what the problem is.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

The mid-wife at the doctor's office said that it is related to the fact that I am still lactating. I'm due for a pap smear soon, but the MW said there was no reason to get it sooner and I shouldn't worry at all.
Thank you all for your responses!

And for those that are also going through a similar situation, she mentioned that it is quite common for this to happen to women every now and then thanks to our lovely hormones.

Were you on birth control? I just switched from Depo to the pill because I would have light bleeding for 4 wks before my next shot. It took an entire month off depo and on the pill to get the bleeding to stop. Yup, 9 weeks of bleeding before it stopped! (hubby and I were thrilled once it stopped! lol)

Hi Proud M. B,

I'm a registered nurse and women's health nurse practitioner student, and although certainly not an expert in this matter I can offer what I know is clinically sound advice.
First, this kind of bleeding is not terribly uncommon. Especially if you have been exclusively breastfeeding it is very normal to have irregular bleeding as your body re-regulates. If you have not breastfed your baby, to begin to get near a cause or diagnosis, you'll need to have a pelvic exam, labs (TSH, prolactin), and a give the provider a thorough history. He/she may want to simply have you watch your cycles for a few months and report back, or possibly begin oral contraceptives in an effort to regulate the bleeding. As I mentioned, if you have been breastfeeding this is normal and may be no cause for concern. Either way, a trusted healthcare provider should be consulted, as you know.
I hope this helps.

Hi,
I have no answer for you...but Walgreens is offering free doctor care at their walk in clinics nationwide for individuals without Health Insurance...I suggest that you seek the helf of a medical professional. If they can't help you try your local community health clinic.

I hope its not cancer. I've been experiencing this same thing for about 4 months. Regular cycle, wait a few days, spotting for 2 days, wait a week, regular cycle. I've noticed that its usually after a really stressful situation.
i.e. my hormones are just off.

go to a family planning clinic, or try and find a free clinic.

failing that go to the dr. tell them that you need to work out a payment plan but you are in desperat need of medical attention.

you arnt much use to your family if you are dead cos you had cystic cancer or some thing like that.

you dont bleed for no reason.

get it checked.

Most likely for your situation you will be referred for a pelvic ultrasound. If you don't have insurance, I might be able to assist you with a low cost fee for a pelvic sonogram. let me know if i can help.

Also, if you don't have insurance you may want to utilize a walk in clinic or an urgent care for consultation.

I think my mother in law had a similar situation. It had something to do with the lining of her uterus being too thick. But she would have heavy bleeding, so I am not sure if it is the same situation, although maybe the lining is too thin or something. Also a friend of mine needed to go on birth control to regulate her period due to breakthrough bleeding throughout the month. Good luck.
