I am looking for information from other moms who have used Depo Prevera in the past. I was on the shot for 5 years, I have been off of it for 3 almost 4 years and I do not have a period, I have been to the DR and been tested for everything imaginable but all the tests came back normal and healthy. I am wanting to know if other moms have dealt this this problem or have any advice on how to possibly fix the problem

What can I do next?

I used the depo shot for years and when I was done with that I went to the pill, that worked for me. I never had a period when I was on the depo shot, but as soon as I got on the pill I was regular again.

Hi Jamie,

Just want to share that I don't get my period regularly either. After my daughter was 2, I didn't get one for a whole year. I understand in comparison to you that's nothing, but I went to the doctor's office and they told me that it was due do unbalanced hormones. In order to regulate my monthly cycle, I was put on birth control pills, but because I gag by taking pills, I got put on the patch. It works for me.
And because it's a hormonal problem, I also take Vitex/Chaste Tree pills (although I hate pills) and you can get them from Vitamin World for less than $8. Hope this helps.

Hey J.,

I am currently on the Depo because I forget to take the pill. What I do know is because it is such a high dose of hormone is really messes up your cycle. I was on the Depo, first, for about 3 months and I didn't get pregnant for 3 years. What does your DR say about it? All I can say is that your body has to get used to back to normal and it takes time.

ok first off I haven't had the depo shot but I do know that if you havent had a period in 3 or 4 years that is dangerous and can lead to uterian cancer I suffer from polycycstic ovarian syndrom and do not ovulate and had the same problem of not having a period have you been checked for that find a specialist one that deals in infertility cuz if you want more kids you need to find out what is wrong cuz not having a period isn't right good luck .. I saw Dr. Hilsinger at the womens clinic

Hi Jamie my name is N. P. I am 29 years old and a mother of 3 with a 4th on the way due any day now. I was also on depo for 5 years and it took my body 6 months to have a period and then a year to get pregnant. I know that you have waited a lot longer then I had too but maybe your body is just different. If all your test have come back ok then I wouldn't worry. Stress can also cause your body to act strange. Maybe you could ask your doctor about starting hormones and see if that will get your body to regulate itself and get back to normal. I would be happy not to have a period anymore, so much that after I have my baby and get my tubes tied I still want to take depo just to keep my period away.

I was on Depo shot for 2 years...then was off for about 3-6 months got pregnant. After having my baby almost 8 yrs ago, I discovered through the same problems you are having that I developed a condition called PCOS (poly-cystic ovarian syndrome) which means my body overproduces insulin which halts ovulation and thus periods...but this can be semi-straightened out by taking the oral anti-diabetic drug Glucophage.

I got the shot one time only- in September 1998, 2 months after the birth of my first child. In December I couldn't get it the 2nd time because we were 2000 miles from home in a children's hospital fighting for the life of our daughter (who lost her fight). Turned out to be a good thing I didn't get the shot again, because as it was I had a continuous period for six months straight. Then once it stopped it didn't come back. When we began ttc for #2, it wasn't happening and we did fertility testing to discover I had completely stopped ovulating. The only thing that got me back to cycling regular was being put on fertility drugs. Took a while but eventually started ticking. Was afraid to ever go on any birth control again.

I got the depo shot 3 times about 5 years ago, and the whole time I had spotting, cramping, no sex drive at all (and it was extremly painful), mood swings, and I gained 40 pounds the first month I was on it. Once I decided not to keep getting it, it took me a year to get my period back. The only reason I did get it back was because I went on the pill for 4 months just to get it back and have them be regular. I had my hormones tested my doctor told me I was going into menapause (I was only 21 at the time). So, going on the pill for 4 months, evened out my hormones and fixed things

Hi, I took only one shot after I had my first son, and I did not have a period for at least a year. I didn't go to the doctor for it, I just kinda enjoyed not having to deal with my period for a while, but took a pregnancy test every month until then. I wonder if it does the same thing that my current birth control does and thickens the uterus wall and stops you from ovulating...even though in some cases you can still have a period when you don't ovulate like one of my friends. I just wonder if taking for so many years takes that much time to get you back on track? Don't know if I helped at all...

Jamie,
Well I've tried the depo shot, not as long as you but i had an absents of period for awhile. These are just suggestions, I don't know what you've tried. Birth control pill or some progesterone pills to start a period ? Some times the body needs a push to get going. Once I did get my period they were very irregular so I tried a cream, wild yam progesterone cream, and I used it for 2 weeks then let my body cycle for another 2 wks, took 2 mos to regulate the monthly periods and on the 3rd month I got pregnate (which we had been trying to do for 14 mos).
So the doc didn't mention premenopause or use of pills to start a period ?
Well I wish you luck and hope that you find something that works for ya.

Thats strange. I was on the Depo shot for almost 7 years and it only took me about 3 months to have regular periods after I had stopped. Has your doctor ever recommended charting your cycles to see if you are ovulating? By charting I mean taking your temperature every morning with a BBT (basil body thermometer) and recording the results. During a normal 28 day cycle a woman will have low temps from the first day of period until ovualtion (approx 14 days) after ovualtion your temp will rise and stay elevated until your next period (approx 14 days). I'm by no means an expert but my understanding if you are not ovulating there is no reason for your uterus lining to shed therefore no period. Anyway, just a suggestion. There are many online sites for charting if you would rather do that then use the charts that come with the thermometer. The one I suggest is www.fertilityfriend.com. I would also suggest going to www.babycenter.com and do a search in the bulletin boards. Im sure there are some woman there that are having the same problem as you. Good luck. :-)

Amazingly enough, I only had one shot of Depo ever and didn't have a period for close to a year afterwards. I wasn't pregnant and there was no other medical reason why I shouldn't have been getting them. Seems it was weird reaction to the shot according to the Dr.

Hi my name is T. I am 36 years old when I was 29 I got the shot I only took 2 shots I did not take any more because for the frist month I bled nonstop but then after that I had normal periods but I had migranes and I could not get pregnant for about 2 years I had a number of miscariges and was told this was all due to the shot.
I did not get pregnant and actuall carry it until 2003 and I had a healthy baby girl in 04 but I was not healthy during my PG and the doctor said again it was the shot.
I think they need to stop giving it because it has done nothing but cause problems for people!
Good luck to you.

Hi Jamie,
I did get the shot about 10 years ago. It made me bleed for 3 months so it was not something that I could keep doing. However, my sister did get the shot and like you she did not have a period for along time after she got off of it. I would recommend maybe going on birth control for a little while to bring on your period and see if this helps. You know how it is suppose to regulate your period. Does the doctor have any suggestions for you on this.

I have used the shot in the past. I loved it. I was on it for almost 7 years this time. Then my dr suggested that I should "give my body a rest" and so I quit taking it about a year and a half ago. It took me 6 months to start my period again, and there has been just a couple irregularities. Once I had 2 periods in a month and most of the time, they just come about every 24 days instead of 28. Other than that, they are regular in every other way. The time I was on depo before that, I was on it for 2 years and then once I quit taking it, I started back up within 2 months with my period.

My sister, on the other hand, took depo and gained a bunch of weight, all in her stomach. She bled constantly and the shot just didnt work for her.

Good luck.

I had the same problem after using depo , I didn't have a period for a little over a year. Were you always regular before taking the shot? I was not, my periods were very painful ,heavy and long but I didn't have them every month.I don't know if it has something to do with how long you were on the shot . I was on it for a year and it took a year to get my period back. What kind of doctors have you been to ? Any hormone specialist or Dr.s who practice natural medicine versus chemical? Have you tried any natural remedies or foods? That might be an idea.Maybe your body needs a type of cleansing from the shot. Hope this advice is helpful and not too weird.

I didn't have that problem I didn't stop bleeding and gained 15 lbs. My doctor took me off after 4 months and said, "yah I wouldn't have suggested this form of birth control to anyone". Then why didn't she tell me that before?? My body strange and bleed thru all birth controls so at this point on nothing! Had trouble getting prego's the last time so I pray i don't get prego's again, LOL. My sisters have the IUD and love it! Good luck

I was on the Depo shot for about 7 years. I was on birth control pills for 3 months when I got pregnant with my first son. I went back on birth control and had problems with the pill. I had outrageous mood swings, periods that lasted 7 days, would bleed through a thick pad in 40 minutes, cramping so severe that I couldn't get out of bed to move, etc. I got off the pill and did nothing for birth control and got pregnant a second time. After the birth of my second son I had heard about the Depo shot and decided on it for many reasons. One I have blood disorder that causes me to be anemic and I don't absorb iron, therefore medically nothing can be done to treat this. Second due to the problems I had on the pill and a miscarriage between my two sons I opted for the Depo shot. Over the 7 years that I was on it I went from weighing 120 to 165. I had no periods, no cramps which was worth it to me. I have decieded that I am not going to have anymore children. So this past October I opted for a new treatment. I had the Essure procedure done. This is where a doctor enters the uterus with a tool that has a small metal implant that gets inserted into the fallopian tube. One implant in placed in each tube. Tissue will grow over the implant and prevent pregnancy. This is simaliar to a tubal ligation procedure but witout being cut and a much faster recovery time. Everything is done internally through the uterus. I also had a second procedure done two weeks after this where the doctor froze my uterus lining. For me this was a great solution. The recovery time was very brief. I was able to resume most physical activities within a day or two of the procedures. The second procedure took about a week to recover. I was still able to work and do daily activities, I just had a bit more cramp like pain. When I got of the depo it was only for a month before the procedure. I had some mild spotting from the Essure procedures. I have lost about 4 to 8 pounds since the procedure. I feel great. I don't have my periods which is a plus for me. My hormones are still in tack and I will be able to go through menopause normally. I won't have to take hormome replacements or things like that. I don't know if I helped or not, I just thought I would share with you what I went through. I wish you well in life, take care.
