Should I Just Wait It Out.

I work in a private firm, don't have insurance so I haven't went to the doctor. But I am on my cycle again for the 3rd time from July. Should I be concerned because my flow has/is extremely heavy each time. I have been eating raisins to build up my iron because I have been so tired. I am now 37; should i just wait it out and see if it happens again next month? Is it worth making a bill going to the doctor now?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone who responded to my request. I went to the clinic here that is based on your income only had to pay $40. She prescribed me some iron pills and gave me a trial packs on Yaz to try to get me regular. She wants me to take some more tests and blood work done. But not for 2 months, that will give some time to save some money and see if the pills work. She believes that my hormornes are just off balance. Thanks ladies.

You should be able to go to the health department for free or lower rate. but I would give them a call, something is not right! Could be starting Menopause early or something else. But I would definitely get seen!

Where do you live (what city)? I would look for a clinic that would let you see a doctor and let you pay on a sliding scale based on your income/expenses. I am on the board of a clinic like that in Memphis, TN. Let me know if you need help finding somewhere to go. You shouldn't put off healthcare. Your peace of mind is important.

When you call the doctor explain that you are currently uninsured and is there any assistance with the charges that they can offer.
Yes - you need to see the doctor!

I had a thermal ablasion procedure in May 2008. They burn the lining of your uterus. (you don't feel anything they put you out). I would recommend researching it. It is for women who have heavy or very frequent periods. You will be tested for cancerous cells prior, because this is a symptom. You also must be convinced that you are done concieving. Normally women who have it done no longer have a period (or very light). I would highley recommend it! I am unsure if you could get it done without insurance. I also would not address it to a Dr. until you are willing to pay cash or get insurance. Pre-existing condition! But decide quick!

Congrats on your engagement, that is wonderful! I have a friend who has been having period every 2 weeks for several years and she has sought medical help for it. Her doctor didn't want to do anything though b/c her ultrasound didn't show any disease. On the other hand, it could be something serious, I would get it checked out if I were u, just to be on the safe side.

How much longer do you have to wait for the insurance? Get some good iron pills, and take them. Eat beans and greens and red meat. Get love of your life to pay for a doc visit, the only problem will be if you get diagnosed and it requires treatment, then, it will be a predisposed condition. Don't wait too long, where do you live?

I wouldn't wait it out. I turned 40 in December and in May started having irregular bleeding. It is something, I believe, to have checked out. In my case, it was found to be nothing more than my getting older (thanks doc!) but at least I know. It could also be caused by a cyst or polyps or something. I would definitely have it checked out though. I know it's hard without insurance, but please take care of yourself.

Suzie, I see you are in Memphis. By all means, contact Rebecca! You may be pre/peri menopausal. When did your mother, aunt, grandmother, older sister reach menopause? It's usually a good indicator of when you can expect to reach menopause, yourself. Thirty-seven, while young for menopause, is not really unusual and many women become menopausal even earlier than that (in their early thirties or even late twenties) and take medication to forestall the onset.

Beyond that, the worst case scenario is ovarian or uterine cancer. That, obviously, is not something with which you want to adopt a "wait-and-see" approach. Dancing at your wedding is a far better prospect for your kids and fiance than sitting at your bedside in a hospital.

Contact Rebecca or locate another clinic in the city. If you have a regular doctor, explain your financial situation and they will, in all likelihood, work out financial arrangements with you. Most doctors understand the situation and are willing to work with you. (My dentist gives an automatic 20% discount to anyone without dental insurance because he thinks the insurance doesn't adequately cover needs and is a waste.)

So, whether it is early onset menopause, cancer, or something more benign, you definitely need to see a doctor to adequately assess the situation and treat your symptoms and/or the underlying disorder.

S.,
PLEASE DO NOT WAIT IT OUT! Get to a good doctor now, and find out what is going on. I appreciate that you don't have insurance, I have been there myself, but you can't put a $price$ on your life. This is a very serious symptom and should not be ignored. There are some helps out there, but don't waste time looking around- tell your doctor your money concerns, he/she or someone in their office should be able to help you out with information. Whatever you do, take care of yourself- you're the only you that you have.
God bless!

Does your county health dept. have a free or low cost care clinic. You should not mess around with your health.

Something similar happened to me (I am 36) and after a bunch of tests my OB/GYN figured out I had polyps. Thankfully they were benign (no cancer!) and she was able to remove them in her office in a 10 minute procedure. That fixed everything, no more bleeding. Definitely get it checked out as soon as you can, both to stop the bleeding before you get too exhausted, and to make sure there's no cancer.

You should not wait it out. I had to handle this when I first started my cycle. I would be on 3 weeks a month and off 1 week. My mom took me to the doctor and they said hormones would correct it. So I had to take the pill even though I was not sexually active. I still have really heavy cycles even after 2 kids, but they only last 5-6 dys per month. You may want to try a clinic for people without insurance. Most cities usually have 2 or 3. You may have to miss a day from work though bc they are extremely slow. If that's not an option, you will have to pay out of pocket, but your body is worth handling this. It won't do anything but get worse.

You need to get to the nearest Planned Parenthood or local Health Departmrnt. Both of those places charge per your income. You may just need to get on the pill to regulate your cycle. It could be something worse but you wont know until you are seen. This one struck home with me because I waited and ended up having to have a complete hysterectomy. Please, Please get seen SOON and let me know how it went. I care.

Do you have a clinic in the area that offers medical care to those without insurance. We have one where I live and it is based on income but treats everyone without insurance and ability to pay. You might also discuss with your regular clinic costs and payment plans up front and see if they would work with you as well.

I'm with the others. Call the Health Department and if they can't help you or refer you to a clinic then check out Planned Parenthood. They aren't just for pregnancies but for all aspects of reproductive health. They helped me when I was younger and having irregular cycles. Just make sure that wherever you go they don't just put you on the birth control pill without finding out the cause of the bleeding. The pill will regulate your cycle but it's like putting a bandaid on an infected cut with no antibiotic. I covers up the problem and makes it less visible but underneath it's still festering.

Is it possible to wait till you're married and on your husbands insurance? Have you ever been told you have fibroid tumors? They are quite common, non-cancerous but can cause excessive and frequent periods when they grow. But if you can wait till you're on his insurance you may want to, because if the tumors are large enough and are giving your problems, the doctor may wish to remove them.

Raisins are fine for the diet but you need to be on an iron supplement (Slow Fe is easier on the stomach and no constipation)! It will also help with the heaviness of your cycle. I start taking them about a week before my period and they are much lighter because of it. Go see a Dr soon, but try this while you wait for an appt.

My immediate response is pretty much the same as the others I see you've gotten. Do get it checked out, if for no other reason than to have the peace of mind. And yes, find your county Health Clinic, where they charge you on a sliding scale based on your income. I lived for years without insurance, in several different states and towns, and was always able to find health care that I could afford thanks to the "sliding scale" method of charging. Look in the government pages of your local phone book, or online, under "__________ County Health Department" for starters. Make a phone call or two and go get checked out! Best wishes to you!
