Okay, I am going to be a sophomore and I just turned 15. I failed my algebra class. Could I still get my permit?

What can I do next?

I don't think algebra has anything to do with getting a permit but if times have changed, I could be wrong. Call the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) where you get the permit and ask them. I have heard that they have started making you get good grades for a license but not permit. You will have to retake algebra and pass it anyway to graduate high school.

If you're asking for an opinion as a parent, I would say NO!

Each state has different laws, so you should check with your states DMV.

Failing one class should not have any effect on your ability to get a permit, however, your school attendance and overall grades need to be good.

You'll also need a parent to sign for you. On a personal note, I have a 15 yo daughter. If she got any grade lower than a B, I would not allow her to get a permit.

The only thing DMV cares about is your age and your parent's approval. Your parent has the say over when you can get the permit. IF you were my child, I'd say no. Having a learner's permit means that you are ready for the responsibility of driving. Failing an algebra class indicates to me that you are not responsible enough to pass a class. How do I know that you would be a responsible driver. First, my child has to meet the responsibilities they already have before they can take on another responsibility.

Not if you were my child. Or my parents child. Driving is a privilege not a right and your job right now is to do your best in school. Driving privileges certainly would be suspended for a failed class. Sorry - but that is the way it is:) Good luck passing Algebra next time and THEN be safe on the roads!

I'm going to cut you a little slack on failing algebra. I had good grades all through school but math has never been my thing. In all of middle and high school I only failed one class...geometry. And it wasn't for lack of trying. If you are trying hard and otherwise doing well keep at it!
It's up to your parents about the learners permit.....

Short Answers:
That depends on the state. Each state has its own laws. You would have to look that up. Talk to your parents

Long Answer:
If you are asking whether or not your parents should still allow it that really depends on your situation and what you and your parents already discussed. As you have probably already read many of the parents have a grade standard. While other parents take into account other factors as well. My cousin, for example, wasn't a very good student but he tried hard. He worked, never got into any trouble, spent most of his free time doing extracurricular activities and studying. He was very trustworthy despite his grades so his parents gave him a car. If my child was generally a good student, responsible, and trustworthy, and this was just one area where s/he struggling then I say yes, they still earned it and deserve it. However, if they didn't try hard was unreliable and I just didn't trust their judgment, then of course a failed algebra test would just be one more thing and I'd say of course not. So, talk to your parents and make sure you are responsible and they can trust you or don't bother.

In NC the answer is no. The law would not allow you to get your permit with a failing grade. But you are in TN, so I am not sure. Good luck.

You would have to call your state's DMV and ask. I agree with what Susie said-I went through the same thing in high school, but when I got a little older, and more settled and was in college, I found it much easier to get a grasp on math. I ended up aceing Algebra 1&2 as well as phamaceutical math, so don't become math phobic! I hated it in High school but absolutely loved it in college!

Unfortunately, yes. In NC, you only have to pass most of your classes. If your parents let you is another story. You need to take and pass drivers ed. Try to do better in school though. It is so important for your future, even if you don't like the classes or think they are relevant to your future.
