Kitty Question

So my mother in law took in a stray cat and was going to bring her to a shelter. Being the softies that we are, we took her in. Well on mother's day she blessed me with three little kittens. :) Surprise.
Well, their eyes just started opening but one little guy's eye is stuck. It's kind of crusty but seems like it may be more than that so I am afraid to pull at it too much. I have been rubbing it with warm water. Does anyone have any other suggestions?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for all the tips. I am going to try the tea and will keep up the warm water rinses. I will keep you guys posted.

I say leave it alone. Most of the time the Mommy kitty will lick that junk off the kittens eyes. We had a barn kitten that had that crusty eye stuff. I kept trying to clean it and it wasn't doing any good. I left it alone for a few days and it cleared up. Try not to handle them too much until their eyes are open. I don't know if that's a factual thing, but my Grandma always told us to leave them alone till their eyes were open.

You should probably schedule vet appointments for all of them anyway. Maybe have the vet take a look at it if it's not cleared up in a day or two.

I sure do! Get yourself a black tea bag. Steep it in a cup of water and once the water has reached a 'luke warm' state, dip a wash cloth in the tea leaving enough liquid to be able to drop water on the kittens eye. Once it has been on the eye for a bit...take the wash cloth and gently clean the eye. Repeat using a clean portion of the cloth. Then repeat these steps for about 3 days 3-5 times a day and the kittens eye should open up. If it doesn't, then the kitten needs to see a vet. I have cured a kittens eye this way and have had told others to do this very same thing and they have had a great response as well.

Give it time, but I do think that you should get Mama Kitty and babies to the vet for a check-up. Mama Kitty really needs vaccinations and to be checked for worms, ear worms, feline leukemia, etc. and other stuff to keep her and her babies healthy.

I just had a litter of kittens that are now 6 weeks old. When my babies eyes started opening, it did take a few days, it wasn't something that happened very quickly - so give it a little time and see what nature and momma cat help with.

I would keep up with the warm water on a washcloth... if it doesn't clear up in the next few days, take the little guy to the vet. Congrats ;)

Some of their eyes will open at different times. The eye is actually closed by a slowly thinning membrane - so forcing it open can hurt the kitten. Have fun - kittens are great muses for funniest home videos!!

you might have to get an antibiotic eye ointment - around $10 but the vet is going to insist you bring it in so they can charge you $100 for the visit.

Keep cleaning it with a cotton swab and warm water - you can get eye rinse from the pharmacy too. Its basically saline solution.

Good luck. (If the problem persists - give them up for adoption, the shelter will take care of the kitty's health there)

I agree - use warm water, gently (it's a baby!), and give your vet a call. You'll want to do that anyhow. Congratulations on your Mother's Day surprise! I hope you'll enjoy your new family.
