Hi moms! I'm thinking of getting Kindles for my 6-10 yr olds for Xmas. Specifically the Kindle Fire 6. I also see that there is a childrens version coming out but I don't see specifics -such as speed etc. I'm thinking the 6 may be better with a good case. Not sure-as the childrens version has a free 2 year no questions asked warranty.
I LOVE the free time feature. I would most likely allow unlimited reading time and limit game time. My kids sometimes have tech days at school where they are allowed to being their tech in (and they have had tablet on their Chrstmas list for years). Many of their friends have iPod touches-but that is not something I could budget 4 of.
Any thoughts? We have an iPad the family uses, but I have no experience with Kindles. I assume they are pretty user friendly.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for the insight, mamas! My iPad is 1st gen and has seen better days. I still don't allow them to take it to school with them. I'm glad that we have it because my kids are exposed to tech without being overexposed like so many. I don't care for the tech days at school either. The teachers have gone as far as having QR code scavenger hunts-which completely divided the class. I feel as if I'm being painted into the corner a little. Friends here on sleepover have shown up with unrestricted iPods and iPhones, etc. I'm considering the kindle as a low cost way to give them a little tech responsibility that I can still guide.

We have the Kindle Fire HD and my 5 year old loves it. It is easy for her to navigate and she loves the games. My 2 1/2 year old boys also like it. What I love about the Free Time feature is you can set up different users. So your 10 year old can have different access to different games and limits than your 6 year old. Just remember to make sure it is set for the appropriate user. It is quite easy when it is in regular mode to purchase apps. It is a matter of clicking a button. If there is a way to password protect purchases in regular mode, I haven't found it. When it is set on Kindle Free Time, the kids can not purchase apps. I also have some books on it for myself and find them easy to read. Our Kindle has taken some falls over the past year and it has held up nicely. Sometimes it will not turn on and I have been forced to do a hard reset (hold the power button for 30 seconds) and it starts up right away. I also think it has a pretty good battery life depending on daily usage. I don't think you can go wrong with a Kindle.

The kid's version is exactly the same as the regular current gen Kindle 6" or 7" options. The difference is that it comes with a a rubber case, 1 free year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, and the 2 year warranty.

My 4yo has a Kinde Fire (first generation) and my son has the Fire HD. I LOVE the parental controls, and we have been super happy with them both. Very user friendly and they love them.
A good case is a must. We got a Swerve case for his kindle and Poetic for hers. Her case was about $7.00 from Amazon, so pretty cheap in all.
Also, we bought both refurbished for less $$ than new. So far, so good.

Hello:

If your kids have been using an iPad, they might be a little underwhelmed with the Kindle. I have Kindle Fire HD6 and my 6 year old uses it. It's a low end notebook for sure. It's not as versatile as an iPad, but it is definately a good notebook for the price. It's fairly easy to navigate with one or two annoying quirks that don't seem to bother my daughter much.

The new kids version of Kindle that is coming out next month does have a camera and WiFi but no video recorder. The Freetime app is fairly easy to navigate but the downloadable games do have popup ads. Freetime unlimited gives a much larger variety of games/videos/books/apps with no popup ads and it is 2.99/month for prime members and 6.99/month for non members. Memory might pose a problem with the (unlimited) version.

As you can tell I'm not overly impressed by the product, but like you, I'm considering one for my daughter because it's a low cost, notebook for kids. It also comes with a 2year warranty claiming they will replace it (no questions asked).

Have a look at the video, this might help. http://www.amazon.com/Fire-Edition-Display-Wi-Fi-Kid-Proo...

Best to you,
Hope

I am against kids and ipads/kindles. It ruins their eyesight. I am also against tech days at school--it is a socio-economic divider.
