JFF: Do You Celebrate Your Pet's Birthday?

Updated on November 21, 2013

Our dog just turned 1, and my son thought we should celebrate, so we did. I'm not talking party hats and streamers, but we got him a new toy and a special treat and sang "Happy Birthday" over his dinner bowl. Do you celebrate your pets' birthdays? If so, what do you do?

What can I do next?

Yes, I give my two Goldens a fresh marrow bone on January 4th (Luna), and July 4th (Kate).

And say (to no one in particular), "Aaaaaw, it's Luna/Kate's birthday!"

:)

How cute! We have totally randomly if the kids insist on doing something. They'll get a new toy or a treat if we think about it. They at least give a hug and a Happy Birthday if they think about it.

We don't celebrate other than saying, "Oh hey, the cat was born this month. Happy Birthday Luna (or Daisy). I bet she'd like some wet food and an extra treat today."

We do. Now it's more private with a special bone or something. As luck would have it, our English cocker ( now 9) has my birthday so daughter makes a cake for both of us!!!

When our now 14.5 yr old American Cocker turned 1 daughter wanted a party so I had cupcakes and punch for neighborhood children!

Our pets are our fur babies. Today was 1week post op appt for our 7 yr old toy poodle. He had cataract surgery in 1 eye and now he can see!!! He's so sweet so now we call him our poodle with the bionic eye because an artificial lens was inserted and he'll never have a cataract in that eye again!! I will say the post op procedures are not fun but were doing well!

His cataract was genetic and happened overnight. We didn't want to risk him suddenly becoming blind. Lot of $$ but his expected life span includes a possible 10 more years! We love our pets and we celebrate them on their birthdays and Christmas!!

We don't know our cat Gus's birthday, but we celebrate the anniversary of when we adopted him. He was 8 then, he's at least 17 now (human years); he can't have many treats and catnip makes him wiggy and incontinent (sorry TMI) so he gets lots of extra pets on his special day.

We love birthdays...especially our poodle's birthday. We take her out on a long walk, get her groomed, and give her doggie treats. For us, I bake a cake.

Our dog (now departed) was born a few days before our neighbors had triplets, so we always knew when the triplets were celebrating their birthdays and we used to buy our dog a new bag of bones. We took lots of pictures on our dog's first birthday. Occasionally over the years, we would take a picture of the triplets and our dog since they shared the same b-day.

I have one friend who did the hats, streamers, a meal out, and a long run on the beach. Too cute!

We have in the past when my daughter wanted to celebrate it. I think it's cute for the kids to want to celebrate a pet's birthday! If I was a single adult I wouldn't do it, but my daughter always had fun planning a party so we let her. In the past she spent a lot of time making signs, choosing treats and presents. Why not?

Now that she's older she doesn't do it anymore. It's something cute that I miss :(

My aunt had two dachshunds that she took to the drive through at McDonald's each year to get them happy meals! We have a cat and I always like to say we're having a party for her birthday just to tick my husband off. He tries to pretend he's not a cat person, but he can often be found contorting himself around when she wants to sit with him to be pet. He is also the first one to check her food bowl when she starts meowing in case she's hungry. I do always get her Christmas presents though, that get wrapped and put under the tree, much to his chagrin!!!

Definitely!! A human treat of some sort (not chocolate)--cupcake, donut, etc. with a candle in it, we sing "Happy Birthday" and take a picture of the dog and my son and then let the dog go to town on the treat!

Fun question!

I used to try and celebrate them when my kids were little because they got a kick out of it - we would light a candle and give them a treat. We haven't done it in a long time though because I usually forget.

However, I never forget them at Christmas. Every year our dog and two cats have stockings that get hung with ours and I'll put in some treats. I put their name on each one with glitter and they look so cute hanging on the fireplace with ours.

Fun question!!

My daughters' enjoy commenting on the cat's (suspected) birthday approaching and we may give an extra food treat, but nothing more really. Maybe if the children were younger or the cat older.

No. Seems odd to me. But I can see kids wanting to do that.

We do, however, put a gift or two under the tree for her at Christmas, she has her own stocking, and once Santa (cough cough) brought her a new bed.

---
Seems odd to make the distinction between the two, perhaps.. but on Christmas morning, she gets excited about all the goings on and can feel the excitement that permeates the morning. And she's had that weird tree in the house for a few weeks... so she KNOWS something is up and that paper will be shredded soon enough. So on Christmas, she gets her own items from under the tree. Usually a new frisbee and some treats. A stuffed animal toy goes in her stocking, with some freeze dried liver or something.
She sits and stares up at it. She knows.

yes, we do! always have. last year, for our Doberman's 1st birthday, we got a photo image cake with a picture of him that was on the news last summer - party hats(he actually like his hat and didn't want it taken off), matching plates/cups/napkins, the noise maker things you blow in, etc. the kids enjoy it and the dogs do too :) our little female Doberman just turned 1(well, close enough, she is also a rescue Doberman so her birthday is an approximation) - the kids had a blast picking out a girly cake and all the stuff to go with it.

ETA: our dogs also have pottery barn stockings just like ours that are personalized with their names :)

Oh how cute... but no, we don't celebrate our pet's b-days.
We don't actually know when they were born.
But we estimate.
We have a bunny and a parakeet and a Mejiro bird.
And a fish.
For now.

i've always made fun of people who do this. sometimes i'd make my old mare a special mash on her birthday, or shovel a few extra treats her way, but nothing big.
then we got the faerykitty.
she got a catfood cake complete with candle, and daddy and i singing to her on her 1st birthday. video-ed.
i'm sure we'll be over it by the time she turns 2.
surely.

special treat for dinner and a new toy or new bed. She also had her own stocking at Christmas.
12/4 will be a year since she passed. We will also be remembering her that day with a visit to her grave and stories about how wonderful and sweet she was.

I don't know my kitty's birthday because he was part of an abandoned litter. Actually, I can't even remember what month or year it was when we got him, so I don't even know how old he is in general. I should look up his vet records. We took him in just a day or two after we brought him home.
