I know someone that had her daughters' toe nails painted at a professional nail salon. Her daughter just turned 2 last month. Is this safe?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, I see that I upset/perturbed some of you. I didn't mean to do that, sorry! My response was off of the first 3 responses I got (so that's all it was based off). Now that I've read all your different views on this subject, I'm not going to say anything to her. But, I do believe that she doesn't know what she wants at this age. I know it would be different when she can speak for herself to chose what she wants. Thank you moms for your comments and concerns.

I think it's way too young. How sad that a child so small would be taught that this is what you have to do to be beautiful.

i would think so!!! as far as just having them cut, maybe, but even then with all the "adult yuckies" i would be afraid her delicate skin could pick something up that the mom wouldn't. plus if its an on going thing it could make her grow up too fast and thin shes more mature for her age...

I strongly feel that a child in a single digit age is far too young for nail polish, makeup, gel or hair dye. My husband and I decided that until our little one turns fifteen will she be allowed to wear either of the above. Untill then it will be chapstick, cherry flavor if she wants a little color and lemon juice instead of hair gel.
About it being safe? It's better to be safe than sorry.

I don't know about safety, but I think that is ridiculous! If she starts grooming her daughter now, she is going to grow up thinking that trying to stay "pretty" is the most important or high up on the priority list rather than just being a little girl. That is sad. Too many young girls are being to care way to much about their looks and not being young and carefree.

So yes, 2 is too young!

I am sure the polish is a little harsh for such a young girl, but I would think the fumes from the chemicles in the salon would be too much for a little one.

I have had my girls nails painted in a salon - there is a difference between having a manicure and getting them painted. The salon charges just 2 or 3 dollars to paint the nails and it is a fun treat. I don't frequent salons but if I did I would see no problem in spending a couple of dollars extra to have my girls nails painted too.
I do however paint my girls nails at home very frequently. They enjoy it, it's fun and a cool bonding thing. I have a 2, 4 and 6 year old girl (and an 8 year old boy who's nails I have never painted - ha, ha). The older two girls regularly have their fingernails painted and my 2 year old has pretty pink on her toes right now. I don't paint my 2 year olds fingernails because she is a thumb sucker and logically that would end up in her mouth. I don't see any harm in doing it. Yes there are chemicals but they probably breath more toxins in the regular air than they get from a few minutes in a salon.
As a side note I don't use remover on them. finger nail polish rubs off in a week or less of their usual activity and their toes last much longer but even that comes off naturally after a few weeks. As for it not being a special occaision or reward for behavior I actually think that makes it better. If kids get rewards like that they begin to feel entitled...I don't earn my way to a pedicure...it's something kind I do for myself - how could a 2 year old "earn" getting their nails painted? I'm not sure that would be a great message to teach.
In my humble opinion you are making a mountain out of a mole hill. I also personally feel that if you were my friend and brought me a list of responses from this site to a question you asked about my mothering choices I would be highly offended. Unless there is an obvious threat to the life or significant threat to the wellness of this child (which I highly doubt) then you should keep your opinions to yourself as they are just that - your opinions. I hope you don't find my response offensive but I honstly believe that we need to let other parents do things their own way without interference unless a child is seriously at risk.
I would just count yourself as fortunate that your little boy won't be getting his toenails painted.

My daughter is almost three and i have had her nails done since her seccond birthday... The nurse at the doctors office just loves to see what she will have on them next. If there was a problem, i am sure that she would say something to me.

Since there are harmful chemicals in many nail polishes & removers, I don't think it is a good idea. I'm amazed a two year old would stay still that long!

You know, alot of salons nowadays have special childrens manicures that use no chemicals, no weird tools, and will either leave the nails bare or just put clear polish on them so that the child feels special and included. Regardless, Ive known many many mothers who will allow their daughters to have manicures for special occasions - and as long as it is only occasional, there is absolutely no harm in having them done at a salon.
Just think of what 2 year olds carry on their hands as it is - all sorts of germs, viruses, bacteria, and dirt - and what they have on their hands on a daily basis is far more dangerous to their health than a manicure is. CHildren dig in the dirt with uncovered cuts, blisters, bug bites, all sorts of small injuries that could become infected at any time - but they dont. A manicure will not hurt a child at all, as long as the salon uses clean and sterilized tools!

I personally think that it's a bit young, but am thinking that if my 2 year old had been extra special good for me that i would take her on a VERY major special occassion...........but certaily wouldn't get in the habit of taking her often.
In the way of it being dangerous, YES. Typical nail polishes out there have EXTREMELY dangerous ingredients in them..........that are more harmful for little people than for us, but are even bad for us. I don't use typical nailpolish though. I get mine from a wellness company to alleviate any of those risks,so i always take my own nailpolish with me when i get my nails done!
:)
(i am happy to tell others about the store where i shop to get it..........

I have a 6 yr old daughter. I've been painting her nails at home since the age of 2 or 3. I don't go to salons. I wouldn't take my daughter to one at 2, unless for a very special occasion. Now that my daughter is older I've thought of having a mommy/daughter day and getting a pedicure. I've never had one.

Hi M. - I just saw your request - I know it has been a while and that you removed the polish, but I just wanted to make sure that you know that you can now check the ingredients of personal care products from shampoos to makeup, including nail polish on www.findgreenhere.com. Go to Cosmetic Safety page and click link toward bottom of page regarding cosmetic database - you can actually put in brand names and make sure that you and your family are not using anything that has toxic or unsafe ingredients. Best of luck to you and your family, :o)

Of course it is safe, unless the child puts her feet in her mouth, which I highly doubt. I wouldn't be so concerned with it. It's just part of being a little girl. My daughter is 2 1/2 and loves to put on makeup, just for play, and have her nails painted. I'm proud to have a girly girl.

That's ridiculous!!!! Yes, I would say that is way too young! The chemicals can be harsh in many nail polish brands. I get mine from an international wellness company that has no harsh or harmful chemicals in it. If you want more info contact me at http:kellyis.stayinhomeandlovinit.com.
