Hi moms!!

I would love to polish my little girl's (she is 19 months old) nails but she still puts her hands (and sometimes feet haha) in her mouth. I am looking for something more natural that isn't going to make her sick. Anybody find anything out there?

I don't think it would be easy or cheap to find anything safe for her to ingest if she bites it off her nails. I say she's 19 months old, let her be a baby and look like one for as long as possible. As the mom of a 7 year-old (going on 16) year-old who is all of a sudden obsessed with fashion and accessories, you'll have plenty of time for all that stuff.

I just ran across some stuff made for kids while shopping online. I found it at http://www.momsmilkboutique.com/products.php?cat=108. There were a lot of colors to choose from and remover as well. The site has free shipping on everything too.

You can check out any products for chemicals or bad ingredients at www.cosmeticdatabase.com. You can do a search by product, company or name. I use botanically and organically based products for my whole family. Good for you for being proactive about the health of your family!

Hi-

I have been using zoya brand (http://www.artofbeauty.com/scrpt/scr.dll/cat?brand=2). They are free of the chemicals (toulene, formaldehyde & dibutyl Phthalate. They are a little pricey but worth it. I use them for myself when I was pregnant and now I continue to only use them in an effort to try to go chemical free and natural for our family.

Good Luck, S.

As a reward for my 4-yr old giving up her finger sucking habit, I agreed to paint her nails. I worried though that maybe she'd sneakily still suck so I made it my mission to find something not as toxic as normal nail polish. I got "No-Miss Nail Polish" for my daughter at Whole Foods. Check out their website: http://65.108.6.137/glitter%20polish.html

Honestly though, I'd wait until your babe is old enough to understand "when your nails are painted you can't suck on them!"

Check out the cosmetic data base that was recommended by Karen M (they also just released their sunscreen list). Zoya is a good brand, I used it during pregnancy and so is this: Nail polish Dashing Diva’s Extra Virgin www.dashingdiva.com

Good for you not wanting to put toxic chemicals on your little girl! They came out with a nontoxic nail polish remover, but I cannot find the name.

Have fun!

At the end of the day, it's your decision, but I really don't think nail polish on a 19 month old is a good idea.

Just don't polish. No need to rush grown up behaviors.

Wow! why polish a baby's nails???!!!!! She's too young for this type of glamour - for crying out loud, she's still a baby.

My girlfriend gave me a nailpolish that actually peels off so you don't ever have to use nailpolish remover. It's GREAT! I think she got it at Green Goods in Evanston. I'm not sure of the name but if you give them a call, I hear the woman who owns the shop is a wizard about all things eco.

C., When I was pregnant I used the nail polish from Whole Foods, water based, non-toxic. I also purchased a bottle from an online source, but I thought that WF had better quality. They sell base and top coat too.
Have fun!

There are several water based nail polishes. I used them on my toes while pregnant. There are two kinds: one that peels off, and one that has to be removed with alcohol. You can get them online or at Whole foods

My 4 yr old has gotten her toes (and a couple times fingers) painted probably since your daughter's age. It does not happen all the time, but it is a treat, right of summer, fun. She is so proud of her "toe polish". Anyway, when painting her fingers we just didnt paint her thumbs which she sucks. I have a 18 month old who I am sure will recieve some "toe polish" this summer. Looks like you got some great ideas on non-toxic polishes. Have fun.

I hate to be negative, but I tend to agree with the two moms who said to wait and let your daughter get into beauty items when she's older.

I have a 3- and 5-year-old and I paint just their toenails.
Consider that since the fingers so frequently make their way into their mouths.

I don't think there's anything wrong with painting a young child's nails, as long as the intention isn't to "make you pretty" but instead, to just have fun with colored toenails. :)

My girls love looking at their red toenails during gymnastics classes. It makes them giggle. :)

Sorry, I have no tips on safe nailpolishes, I just wanted to make a point that painting their nails is not setting them up for psychological devastation. It's just fun.

The natural brands.. aren't so "natural" after all.. if you check the ingredients.. it might be free of the more well known bad chemicals.. but many still seem to have TITANIUM DIOXIDE. This compound has been linked as a cancer causing carcinogen. It was brought to my attention by my best friend after I had purchased some nail polish that I thought was "safe" .. your best bet is to let your kid be.. and invest in a little manicure tool set with a buffer and clippers.. not polish.. It's so hard to avoid bad chemicals.. because companies are allowed to put in whatever, it seems, and the government doesn't care enough to regulate production.. unless it benefits them to.
