I see that most moms/ladies truly enjoy their nails done. I have not taken my 3 yr old to get them done in a salon. I have soaked her and her brother (5yrs) feet in water, then lotioned them up then painted my daughter. Son was on intersted in painting his nails!!
:-) I am still not sure that I will take her anytime soon, but was curious what other mama's do. :-) Thanks so much for your input.

I definitely wouldn't do it before she's old enough to know to ask for it. Even then, I don't know that this would be my first choice for a mother/daughter activity. I feel there is so much emphasis on looks and appearance these days, I would rather spend my time with my daughter doing something more active or intellectually engaging.

I am taking my daughter a in couple of weeks to get her nails painted and she is 4.5 . My husband and I regularly take our kids on special one on one dates, and this is what my daughter always asks for.
@ 8kidsdad, spending fun, quality time with my kids is never money thrown in a trash can. I would rather spend the small amount to make their day special than have a bank full of money.

I took my oldest at 4, and i do this ever so often as a treat for good grades and just mommy/daughter fun time.
I say if they want it, as young as you think, as long as they are patient enough to sit there, my oldest always was, my youngest on the other hand is very squirmy
But fake nails,,,,,never, ill never allow that with my encouragement, thatd be like allowing a piercing, it damages the nails and a fungus can grow.
ugh..*****..8kidsdad,,,,Ben,,,lol!! you are a guy and just dont understand! :0)
its female bonding, and is priceless, like dad/son throwing and catching

I started taking each of my girls when they were 5 years old, just for polishing their nails. I usually go by myself to get my nails done but once in a while one of the girls will ask to go with me and I'll gladly take them... one of them... with me. My tech owns her business and has three daughters all my own girls' ages so they play together while I'm getting my nails done.
But usually, my girls do each others nails at home. I started doing their nails at 2 years old. It's a fun and harmless Mommy/Daughter activity and I make sure to get them nontoxic polish.

I took my daughter for her first mani and pedi when she was 4 years old. It was her Valentine's Day present. She LOVES it. We don't go all the time but she gets to go for special occasions or once in a great while for Mommy/ daughter outing. Her favorite is the pedicures. She loves the foot soak and the lotion. The salon doesn't charge full price for her, of course. It's under $20 for her to get both done- unless she gets a design (which we've only done once because it gets expensive).

I bring my 5 year old (almost 6) and we've been going together for a little over a year now. She LOVES it and thinks she's so fancy (Fancy Nancy!) when she's done. It's a fun Mommy-Daughter outing. :-)
(ps... she just gets her finger nails clipped and painted - but one time they did the arm massage part too and she almost fell asleep - it was so relaxing to her... and she's quite the outgoing-rambunctious child most of the time!)

Really? I must be weird then because my daughter has been going with me since she was born. I think she was 10 months old when I put her little feet in the cool water when my pedicure was almost over. I have pictures of her not even two getting her nails painted. She's a girly girl, and there is nothing wrong with it. I see like girls ALL the time getting their nails done. Why hold them back on anything? My kids can do many chores in the house, make their own breakfast and lunch, etc, why not let my daughter get her nails painted? No harm, no foul.

I never found this necessary, but then, I don't get my nails done at a salon either. My 16 year old has had one professional manicure, a couple of months ago, the day before junior prom. I can't see the necessity of taking 4 year olds for professional mani's or pedi's, it just seems ridiculous to me to pay for that. My kids are 16 and 12, and I know that kids today grow up fast enough as it is, taking preschoolers for nail salon appointments and frappucinos just seems to feed into that trend, and I don't think it's good for kids. Keep in mind that my point of view comes from the experience of someone who doesn't do salon mani's and pedi's myself. It might seem normal for moms who frequent nail salons and take little kids along with them to include the little kids. I would never do this.

What do you mean by having her nails done?
Just painted? with a design on it?
Or, the whole 'manicure' routine like they do on women?
Many places, for KIDS... will only paint the nails or paint a design on it.
You can also do that at home yourself.
I have.
My daughter is now 8.
She has, painted her nails already by that age. At home. On her own. I have nail polish that I let her use, or I buy "Piggy Paint" kids nail polish that does not have the chemicals in it. Natural and without toxins in it. Look it up online. Even E-bay has it and Amazon, for example.
At 7, my friend took my daughter and her daughter to a "nail salon." The same one that my friend goes to and that her friend owns. The girls only got their nails painted with cute flowers painted on it. Not a whole "manicure" routine and no cuticle cutting or nail filing, etc.
ONLY painted nails. Only nail polish.
It was for my daughter, as a 'gift' for her Christmas present.
Or my daughter gets her toes painted with flowers painted on, since her Aunty takes her once in awhile. As I said, my daughter is 8.
But this is not a regular thing. Just as a special treat or occasion.
I don't mind.
all the best,
Susan

wow I was thinking 11, 12 ish you know to celebrate she is no longer a little girl. Its special to save a few things to acknowledge them growing up, when they actually do start changing. Just my opinion: Little girls should be playing in the dirt and on the monkey bars not worrying about their manicures. The first time my daughter went it was a party and a very special event. I didnt take her because I saw a documentary on blood infections caused by salons and freaked me out.

I loved reading the responses, my daughter is 2 1/2 and when I paint my toes she wants hers painted. I will probably take her every great now and then when she's 4. I say every great now and then b/c that's how often I go haha.
8kidsdad, you think bonding with your child is throwing money in a trash can just because it isn't a way that YOU would do? Kinda close minded. It's not a pageant or anything, it's just painting nails and having "girl time". It doesn't teach them anything negative. Kids are individuals and should be treated like that.
I try to do as many bonding things in between big vacations on a daily basis. I'm not waiting til Disney world or Bryce canyon to do a bonding activity.

If I couldn't find a salon that used polishes that were free of VOCs, toulene, and formaldehyde I wouldn't taker her ever nor would I go.
Most nail polishes have these harmful chemicals in them.
I would opt for DIY pedis at home with polishes I knew were safe - spa night in w/mama!

We were in Brasil, I desperately wanted a pedicure (didn't have a chance before I left). My daughters were with me (ages 13 and 15), I let them have their finger nails done for 2 reasons - 1. we were on vacation it was a special treat 2. it only costs $2.50 (for cleaning, filing and painting - no massage).
My daughters have been taught how to do their own nails and have been painting and caring for them for years themselves.

I wanted to go for a pedi w/ a friend of mine and being a single mom, my daughter came w/ me. She was just going to hang out with us but then she said she wanted her toes painted. I let her get them painted, but that's it. She did come up and whisper to me that she didn't get the water part and I told her that's cause she's too young yet. She's 5.

When my daughter was turning 10 we made it a big deal of getting her nails done and a pedicure. It was special time for mommy and her. Before that their is no reason I say. Now on another note my daughter has been using nail polish since she was 8 but she'd do it herself. Just light colors like pink or a funky blue or green. Just little girl fun stuff.. I wouldn't make it a normal thing just a special occassion fun evening out with mom. A time to bond

My granddaughter has been going with her mom since she was about 4. She is almost 9 now. But she gets an abbreviated pedi / mani. they do not do the cuticles they do not do excessive sanding on the heels etc. she gets the soak and the foot / calf rub with lotion and then a pretty color on the toes. pretty much same for fingernails no cuticles. just some shaping, lotion and then the painting. she loves it

We love getting pedicures in my family. My 3 year old always comes with me, and the ladies always paint her toes or her fingernails while we are there. She loves it!
We started a tradition a couple of years ago at Thanksgiving. We always stay at my brother and SIL's, all go heavy duty shopping the next day, and on Saturday, all the girls, no matter how old you are, go and get pedicures. Some of the best pictures we have are of my 3 year old and my 4 yr old niece soaking their feet and relaxing in the massaging chair!

My daughter is 3 and my mom takes her to get her nails and toes polished. I was talking to the guy that does my nails and he told me that he found out that its not good for their nails at such a young age. He stopped doing his 3 year olds nails. I tend to believe him since he is up on all this since he does nails for a living. He never said when a good time to start would be.

I always do my own lately, but next time I go to a salon, I might bring my daughter and let her have a pedicure too-she's 5 and likes girly stuff more than I do! I'll tell the lady not to file or snip or scrape her though, just dip her feet in the bubbly water and then paint her nails. If she wants. But if I know her, she'll chicken out at the last minute :) If she likes it, we'll do it once in a blue moon, not often.
