Intense 24Hrs a Day Morning Sickness

Hello fellow moms, I am pregnant with our first biological child, and very sick. I am only about 8 weeks along, but cannot stop throwing up. I am sick 24hrs a day. Nothing sounds good to eat, and when I finally get something down, I throw it back up almost immediately. I don't go to the doctor until the end of this week. Any advice or helpful suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have tried eating crackers before getting out of bed in the morning, but I have usually thrown up throughout the night already. Thank you all in advance for any help.

So What Happened?

Thank you so much for all your advice. I called my OBGYN who directed me to go immediately to an urgent care facility for IV fluids and medication. She informed me that this could be very serious to both me and the unborn baby if not treated immediately. The urgent care facility put me on Zofran, I am feeling much better, at least I got a bit of soup and a piece of toast in tonight, so far so good. Thank you all again, I sooo greatly appreciate it.

I had the same thing with my 3rd son. Unfortunately there's not much you can do. Luckily with me it only lasted about a month. I know, that sounds like a long time, but considering some women have mild morning sickness all 9 mo, 1 mo is much better. Congratulations on the baby and have fun!

I had bad morning sickness too, but I can't remember it lasting all day though.

What really worked for me was Ginger Snap cookies. To be honest, as soon as I ate one, it was an instant relief. The ginger is good for the morning sickness. You can try this, if you haven't already.

The saltine crackers for me, was really for like gas, not morning sickness. Hope this helps.

I agree with Julia. Call your dr. And if for some reason they can't get you in, go to an urgent care. I had the same problem when I got pregnant. We were in the process of moving and I didn't have a regular OB when we got to the new place. I made and appt, but they couldn't get me in for a few days. I went to an urgent care and said that I was throwing up all the time and couldn't eat, drink or even think about food without throwing up. They gave me something for the nausea and I felt so much better. The stuff they gave me did make me feel kind of sleepy but so much better than constantly throwing up.

I had this with my first...for 6 months and then it picked up again at month 8. People will give you all kinds of advice from wrist bands to small meals to ginger tea, but when you can only put down sometimes 4 oz of water in a day (and usually water comes back up the fastest) the ONLY thing that worked was Zofran. It is a prescription used for chemo patients but pregnant moms with serious nausea use it too. Ask your doctor about it. I would still get sick a couple times a day but not nearly the amount before I took these miracle pills. Also, get the ones that dissolve on your tongue. They work almost instantaneously. Good luck!

Oh I am so sorry! I had the same problem during my pregnancy. Despite trying all of the over the counter remedies that were recommended by my dr (ginger, Unisom) I ended up having to take a prescription to control my nausea. My Dr. put me on
Phenergan (promethazine) which totally did the trick. I took it for 5 1/2 months and found it to to be a god send. It is safe (I have a healthy 9 lb 4 oz newborn to prove it). The only real side effect was it makes you sleepy - but heh, aren't all pregnant women sleepy? My Dr. also tried Zofran with me, however I found that it didn't work as well and was super expensive so I went back to the Phenergan.

Despite being concerned about taking medication, my Dr. reassured me that it is more important that the baby and I got good nutrition.

Slowly sipping Ginger Ale helped me. You may also try fruit. That was all I pretty much ate for the first few months of my pregnancy. I am so sorry, I feel your pain. Congratulations though!

if you truly can't keep absolutely anything down for 24hrs, i would call you doctor and schedule and appointment early. if you can talk to the doctor or nurse, even better.

it was too long ago that I was in your boat. 11 weeks, actually. i had to schedule an appointment with my doctor early and he gave me a prescription which really helped.

but hang in there, there's hope for it to get better.

Go see your doc. sooner than the end of the week. Doesn't sound like you'll be keeping enough down for the baby. THey can give you IV fluids to help the baby.

You poor thing! Sometimes women just have what the medical community calls "hyper emesis." It's their way of saying we vomit constantly. You need to be careful though so you don't become dehydrated. Try to at least get some fluids in you if you can. It sounds like you should be monitored by your doc too...Best of luck!

Hi A S:
I'm sorry your going through this terrible bout of morning sickness.I realize, its sometimes hard to think straight, when your feeling constantly sick and can't hold down a thing.BUT..Its very important, for you to call your Drs office and let the nurse know, how many days you have been vomiting. You can so easily become dehydrated, especially in this heat. You certainly don't want to wind up in the hospital on an IV for days.See if they will prescribe something for your nausia. For quick relief,I've heard a few girls, that bought some (ginger extract tablets) and they say it worked wonders! You should be able to get them at a rite aide,or a health food store like clarks. I really hope your feelin better soon A S. You want to remember this pregnancy,as a pleasant experience.congrats to you both,on the wonderful news.

I am so sorry you are so ill! I experienced the exact same with both of my pregnancies. You really, really need to contact your doctor and let them know how bad it is. Occasional vomiting is normal, but it sounds like you might have hyperemesis gravidum and might need medication. From 6 weeks on, I took a whole host of different medications but the only one that worked was Zofran. It costs a lot of money, but well worth it! You could harm yourself or your baby if you lose too much fluid so please call today! I wish you the best with the remainder of your pregnancy. OH, and the good news is that it will probably either go away or subside a lot somewhere around 20 weeks.

When I was pregnant with my third child, I felt the same way. My doctor suggested an over the counter medication that I relied on through my 6th month. It was the only way I could make it through the day. Don't hesitate to call your doctor in between visits. Good luck!

the best you can do is just ride it out at this point. i am pregnant with my third and i have morning sickness mostly in the afternoon's and evenings. the bright side to this unpleasant apect of early pregnancy is that it means you have high levels of hcg hormones, which means you are supporting a healthy pregnancy. the downside is you feel terrible. when you see your doctor, ask for a prescription for dissolvable zofran. it works almost immediately and even if it doesn't stop the nausea completely, it definitely takes the edge off. phenergren and reglan are also helpful prescription anti-emetics. until you see the doctor, try ginger any way you can get it in. it naturally settles your stomach and inhibits the vomiting. i was sick like you are now until almost 7 months with my daughter. with my son, my second child, just two weeks. this one is going on 10 days, so i am hoping for relief soon. make sure everything you take in is lukewarm, your stomach will tolerate it better. the only exception is popsicles. they seem to do the trick sometimes. also, if you have a motherhood maternity store nearby or access to it online, they have what are called "preggie pops" and "preggie drops". they are sour suckers, with and without the sticks. they tend to help reduce the nausea also. anything on the sour side, such as lemonlime sode (sprite, 7-up, squirt) makes your mouth water a little bit and can reduce nausea also. try to eat little amounts, just a couple bites at time until you think it will stay. if it stays for 1/2 an hour, try a couple more bites. stick to bland foods and things that are kind to you coming back up, the last thing you need is for your throat to be irritated further by tortilla chips or other crunchy, hard foods. other than that, keep your fluid intake up. if you begin to feel faint, please, by all means hit the ER immediately. they can rehydrate you and give you IV nausea medicines. i work in the ER and ICU, and also had to hospitalized three times during my first pregnancy. pay close attention to your level of hydration, such as urine output and capillary refill(pinch your finger and if it taking longer than 2-3 seconds to get color back, you are dehydrated). good luck, most people feel better by week 10-12.

All I an offer is encouragement - I had the same thing for 6 months and lost 15 lbs. in the 1st trimester...I couldn't even keep water down. I tried everything I read and whatever people advised but nothing worked for me either. My doctor gave me Zofran which helped the throwing up but not the nauseas feeling, unfortunately. I am sure you've heard this already, and it sounds ridiculous right now, but this too shall pass and it will all be so worth it! I swore I would never do it again and we would adopt next time, but we now have a very healthy, 5 1/2 month old baby boy and I would do it all over again in a second. Hang in there and congratulations!

you poor thing! I remember...I too was sick as a dog with each one of my (4) pregnancies. it seemed never ending and life was worth nothing. I couldn't sleep, eat or do anything I fell into a deep depression each time. I know you can take medication for it but I would not recommend that. I just don't think medication is a good solution while pregnant...I always worry about the development of the baby...so fragile...I tried to remind myself that a few months of nausea is better than a lifetime of having a child with a problem.

On the other hand I did try acupuncture and it helped a little.

To give you hope, usually this clears up by the beginning of your 2nd trimester. I know this sounds like it is a world away but it is really only a month away for you. From one day to the next it was gone. I wish you the best! hang in there! your Baby will be so worth it!

I was very sick, 24 hours a day, for six months with my first two pregnancies. Nothing worked for me, crackers, peppermint, soda water, nothing! I couldn't keep prenatal vitamins down either. The only things I could keep down were popsicles, and I'd drink gatorade, and chew on ice to hydrate myself. Sometimes I'd throw up the coloring in the popsicles, but it seemed most of the liquid stayed down. The key for me was to never let anything hit my stomach all at once. I had to drink very slowly, very small swallows, but I would drink all day long. I know it stinks, but, in the end the result is worth it! I have two beautiful girls to show for it! (funny, but I never threw up when I was pregnant with my two boys.)
Try to concentrate on staying hydrated, It's amazing how long we can go without eating as long as we take in enough liquids.
I feel for you! I know how hard it is to care for a child while being sick 24/7!
Best of Luck to you, and I hope you feel better soon!

Call your doctor immediately---don't wait!! In the meantime, it's possible ginger decaf tea might help, but chances are you need to get something from your dr., even if it's just an IV.

The only thing I have heard of that works for morning sickness that you can have when you are pregnant is ginger root. They have it at all Japanese food places and serve it with sushi. I'm sure the Dr' can prescribe something if he or she really feels that you and the baby are not getting enough nutrition. Hang in there, for most people it ends with the first trimester. With my 4 it was usually at about 4 1/2 months. I feel your pain.

I saw another mom mentioned Zofran - it was the only thing that got me through my pregnancy without being dehydrated and weak. There is good news though! They have passed the FDA time frame and now there is a generic Zofran (Ondansetron). YAY! When your morning sickness is this bad, be sure and ask for the kind that dissolves on your tongue. I found the regular pill just came up as soon as I drank a sip of water. Also, if you get to the point where you are weak, sluggish, can barely think or show any signs of dehydration, do not hesitate to go to the ER! My husband dragged me there when I could barely respond to him after being sick for several days. They pumped me full of 3 cases of IV fluids (and my first pee afterwards was still only a dribble), gave me intravenous Zofran, and made me eat some food once the nausea had passed. It was well worth the trip and long wait in the ER. My insurance would only pay for 9 pills of Zofran a month so I suffered still the whole pregnancy, but the first 7 months were the worst. Also, please ask your doctor to check your thyroid levels. I already had thyroid problems so my regular doctor was checking mine but it took him seven months to get up to the right dosage and my OB said that was probably contributing to my feeling sick. If I ever get pregnant again, I will insist they increase my dosage much more quickly.

My friend is also pregnant and is a Holistics practitioner. So everything she takes is ALL Natural she said she was feeling sick and went to Trader Joe's and got Red Raspberry Lear Tea and it took the morning sickness away. Try googling Red Raspberry Leaf and see what it says for pregnancy. I hope it helps.

Here are a few tips:

Don't drink anything with your meals, drink about an hour before them. (That way, you don't have a bunch of liquid to throw up that will take all the food out).

Avoid sudden movements.
Avoid greasy foods, highly seasoned, or fried foods.
Try to eat six small meals a day.
Don't use alcohol or tobacco.

If nothing else works, try 25 mg of vitamin B6 and 250 mg of ginger every eight hours for three days (nine doses)

OR

12.5 mg of Benadryl three times a day, as needed. Ask your doctor first, you should call even if it's not time for your appointment for a few days and let them know what is going on.

I am the mother of four. With my second, I had HORRIBLE morning sickness, 24 hours a day. It was awful! Went on for about the first 5 months. There is not much you can do. Taking drugs was not an option for me. Keeping down enough food to maintain healthy nutrition, and staying hydrated, are the important things. I was seriously worried that I would have a scrawny and sickly baby due to nutritional deprivation. I tried everything! Eating ginger, drinking ginger tea, using those wristbands, crackers in the morning, and every other hint or tip anyone gave me. The up side? Women who have morning sickness tend not to miscarry. So I focused a lot on that. By the way... that child turned out to be my biggest and strongest baby at birth. A ten pounder who held his head up - and steadily - literally from birth.

I'm sure you meant "pregnant with our second child". Your first pregnancy, your second child. You do not have an adopted daughter. You have a daughter who happened to come to you by way of adoption. When speaking of my kids, I do not specify which came to me by caesarean and which by vaginal birth, because nothing matters less. Same with adoption. Calling a child an "adopted daughter" is labeling her. As an adopted child, I would have been MORTIFIED if I had ever been described in that way. Being open about the joy of adoption is one thing. Being described as an adopted child is another. Just my pet peeve.

Ginger. You can buy a root in the produce section of the grocery store, slice off a piece and suck on it.

Or acupuncture works WONDERS! but, ginger is easier, and cheaper!

good luck and remember it is worth it.
