Input on Medicalert Bracelets for Kids

I need to order medicalert bracelets for my two little girls, 2 1/2 and 5, who both have food allergies. I've seen lots of options online, but wanted input from anyone who's actually purchased them. What has worked best for your kids? Have you purchased a medicalert bracelet you just love (or hate) in terms of how it stands up to the sandbox, the playground, and just regular day to day usage? Have you gotten any feedback from other people in terms of visibility? (It's a balance act between needing people to recognize it for what it is and NOT making my girls feel like they're standing out too much from their friends.) Thanks in advance!

Hi K.. I don't know about the bracelets, however my daughter had her 1st day of preschool and I'm frustrated and confused that her teacher does not seem willing to work with my daughter's egg & peanut allergies! This is all new to me, so I'm trying to figure it out. The teacher allows parents to bring whatever snacks they want regardless of my daughter and has refused to learn the epipen because of lawsuits!!!! I don't know what to do!!!

I wear Medic Alert bracelets all the time. I prefer the sport bands. However, the bands with the sister lock (or whatever they call it) definitely won't come off and they have a lot of nice ones with beads and all... I would think these would be good because you can remove some of the links to fit the child's arm. The other thing I have seen for kids and have even thought about getting for me is the ones that attach to the tennis shoes. The appear to be small; however, not sure how easily they are seen or read. Perhaps you could contact Medic Alert directly to see what they sell most for kids.

I have an 11 year old that wears a Medic Alert necklace. He has worn it since he was 9 and had his first seizure. I recommend the necklace, just because they can wear it under their clothes. I was afraid that my son would lose a braclet that is why I settled on a necklace. He is a very active boy and is able to wear it all the time. He even wears it when he is swimming. I have not had anyone comment on it as he wears it under his shirts. Now I know that they offer things that can attach to their shoes, I am not sure how well that works out on active children. I love his Medic Alert. I know that when I am not with him, if he has a seizure that the Paramedics, school nurse or ER Physician has immediate access to his medical information. I don't know if your 5 year old is in school, but whatever you decide just make sure that they know you have your daughter registered with Medic Alert. I hope this helps answer some of your questions. Good luck with whatever you decide.

My 4 year, almost 5 year old has been wearing a medicalert bracelet since she started preschool 2 years ago. They work great. If the 5 inch size is too big for your younger daughter, you can call and they will do a smaller size. I just get her the standard bracelet and let her pick the color for the lettering. Don't get the pink because even medicalert employees say it's too light. We have had the blue both light and dark and now have the purple which looks like a combo of purple and hot pink. They do get scratched up especially at preschool, but doesn't limit the visibility of the medicalert wording or symbol. The price of a new bracelet has worked for us as far it getting too scratched up (mainly at the end of a school year) or having to add new life threatening allergies. The beaded bracelets are very cute, but the smallest size is 6 inches, so I wouldn't offer it at an option unless you think your older one is that size and you little one won't need to have her's look like your older one's. We haven't reached that size yet. It's definitely good in terms of visibility. We have many people notice it which makes us feel better should something happen to her. All in all, we are very happy with medicalert.

hi K.!

yes, i've had to purchase a few of them and my favorite is from "american medical id" (www.americanmedical-id.com). i've had the original medic alert bracelets before and they're probably the ones i dislike the most.

the ones from american medical id allow you to enter MUCH more information, along with the childs name (which is critical!!) and medications... right on the bracelet. they offer other options in addition to the traditional bracelet as well and at a very reasonable price. i would recomend getting the little charm as well because i've found that the EMT's may miss the bracelet if it's flipped on the other side of the wrist.

i have no affiliation with the company, i just love the bracelets. i have a now 7 year old with food allergies, a nephew with a rare form of hemophilia, and i have several auto-immune diseases that affect my heart, lungs, muscle tissue and brain (and i have siezures). so i've definately gone through my share of bracelets!!

hope this info helps!

K.,
I bought one that looked like a charm braclet. When I asked the paramedics about it, they said two things, the symbol was not red and they are trained to check the neck and ankle for the, with the red symbol. I also bought sterling silver as they hold up better and look better longer. Since your girls are growing you may want to consider a cheaper option. The one I bought was for me.

Hello K.,
Actually there is something you can do. I don't know what area your in, but if you call them, they can send you a bracelet. Here in my town, there is a local office. I don't know the number off hand, but you can look it up under yellowpages. Good luck with that. The number is 1-800-344-3226 for anyone who might need the number.

K.,

I have had to wear a medical alert bracelet since I was little. It was never a problem for me and from what I can remember, kids liked it. They thought it looked neat and wanted one too. We ordered ours from the pharmacy and it was just a basic silver one-- it held up fine with playing, bathing etc. I didn't have to take it off for anything.

Good luck,

Molly
