How to Keep Son Swaddled

My 3 1/2 month old son seems to need to be swaddled to sleep. However, for the past few nights he has been waking up a couple times during the night. He manages to get himself almost completely out of the swaddle, then cries until I get up and re-swaddle him. That last a couple hours, then he's out of it and crying again.

Any ideas? I am using the Miracle Blanket because it has no velcro, which seems to wear away as it gets used. It worked miracles for my first son, but I guess Brian is some sort of magician because he can get out of it in no time.

I've tried leaving one of his arms out, but he doesn't seem to calm down and sleep unless both arms are swaddled.

What can I do next?

My youngest son loved being swaddled but was able to kick out of it (which would cause the whole swaddle to come undone) so this is what I started doing - rather than leave his hands out I would leave his feet out and I would double swaddle him with each wrap in different directions. By that I mean the first blanket I would put the right side over first and the second blanket I would put the left side over first and swaddle tighter than you think they can stand, especially the first blanket.

Two words...double swaddle!! Here's a link with a description of the technique: http://toomuchbluesky.blogspot.com/2007/10/how-to-double-...

My son was swaddled to sleep for the first 6 months and swaddled for naps for the whole first year. We used the "swaddle-me" at home but I learned this technique from the staff at our day care. It works!! Especially as he grew bigger and stronger. He still wanted to be all wrapped up but would easily undo the regular swaddle. Good luck!

My son (who is 5 months) is swaddled every night. He is very strong (practically crawling already!) I have to use the SwaddleMe with the velcro because he can get out of everything else. I used the SwaddleMe with both sons and the velcro has yet to wear away. They also sell the Kiddopotamus, which is the same as the SwaddleMe, but I've never tried it. Good luck!

I don't know that I recommend this, but my son did the same thing (we called him Houdini) and so I started to safety pin the swaddle. As get got a little older I didn't do it anymore b/c I worried about him choking. But, while he was really little it helped to keep him swaddled.

How about a sleepsack? It's the kind that zips up the front. You can get it with or without sleeves. He won't be able to get out of it.

My daughter used to do this too and I ended up making a bigger swaddling blanket for her because she was outgrowing the one she had. I went and got fabric at JoAnne fabrics then use hemming tape ( you use a heating iron with it so it is very easy). This solved the problem until she was about 4 months- then we started weaning her off the swaddling.

Could you try swaddling him with his arms in and then after he's asleep, loosen up to get his arms out?

We also use the Swaddle Me. It is the only one that worked for us! I think it was $9.99 at Babies R Us...totally worth it!!

Hi S.,

I kept my son swaddled at night until he was 5 months old and he slept really well that way. I just used a really good receiving blanket to keep him all swaddled up. My favorite kinds are the Koala Baby Thermal Receiving Blankets at Babies R US: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2953108 - they are a little stretch, so it is easy to get the baby swaddled up good and tight and they stay in place. They are also larger than most receiving blankets so you can easily get them tucked in around the baby.

I know this isn't exactly on point, but my twin daughters used to be able to get no matter what. We used to pin their zip-up pajamas shut so the zipper wouldn't come down. As toddlers we'd zip up and pin, put them to bed, but they'd still be in the morning with the jammies (with zipper still pinned shut) would be laying on the floor along with their diapers. Do your best to keep him swaddled, but if he's not sleeping when he kicks it off (and he'll likely continue) then you might want to find another comfort item to keep with him so when he kicks the blanket off he'll still be happy enough to sleep. I understand the "worked for the first one" theory, but my son is totally different from my daughters, and my twin daughters are like polar opposites even though they're identical.
