Strong and Tall 8 Week Old in Need of a Bigger Swaddle Blanket

I am a swaddling pro. I have so many different types of swaddles--Kidoppatomus, Sleep Sack, Aden + Anais, and brands I don't even remember. My new hands down favorite is the Woombie--it is incredibly easy, and there's no way he's breaking out of it.

My son is now 4 mos and he is sleeping even better in the Woombie. Basically, it looks like a zip-up pea pod. I can't tell you how wonderful it is--even my husband can zip it up without any issues. Last night my son slept 16 hrs straight in that thing. I'm now using the other swaddlers as my back-up for when his Woombies are in the laundry.

(ETA - my kids like to be swaddled for a long time--usually about 6 mos)

We had great luck with those Aden + Anais swaddlers. We swaddled both of our babies for several months (eight months and five months as I recall) so we had to go to the larger size swaddlers. They are light weight so not too heavy but stretchy enough you can really swaddle tightly. The Aden + Anais swaddlers held up through our two babies and are still going strong. At this point I keep one in the car for a light blanket and/or towel. They make great sun covers at the beach. Good luck.

I would just take a sheet and cut it to the size you want. We used the velcro swaddleme swaddlers until our dd was 9 months old.

You could just make a larger blanket from a piece of fleece. But 2 months seems awfully old for swaddling. At least to me it does. At some point they need to learn to soothe themselves without needing that - it's been a long time since mine were infants, so maybe others would disagree.

We had this issue with both of my kids, who were 11# at birth. With my first, a woman made me blankets from baby fabric. They were cut much bigger than the ones you buy and she stitched around the edges. I must have had at least 6 of them and they were perfect. So go to a fabric store and see what they have there. My DD was a tough one too. She was nearly 10lbs at birth, 98% for length, and had full head control straight from birth. (Seriously, you would be holding her and she would lift her head up off your arm and start looking around.) she also had colic and reflux, so needed the tight swaddle.

I used to wrap her double. I would fold a receiving blanket in half, and use that to bundle her bottom half. Then I would use one of those really stretchy blankets (I think they are made by Gerber... They come in 2 packs and are the same size as receiving blankets..) to swaddle her arms and torso.

It worked really well for us.

I made a couple of large swaddling blankets for my granddaughter...

I bought a couple of different prints of flannel..... 1 1/2 yards of each...

I simply cut it into a large square (if the flannel is about 44" wide, I cut it about 44" long), hemmed the edges, and my daughter used that as the swaddling blanket.

It was large enough that we could easily swaddle her for several months, and we could get her in a nice tight swaddle.

Get a "miracle blanket". Baby Houdini himself could not bust out of that thing :) Seriously though, nothing else worked for us. Those swaddler blankets are trash. This thing really works!

Swaddling only lasted a few weeks for us.
Our son was a kicker too and he got use to sprawling out fairly quickly.

I used Carter blankets for a long time because they were stretchy so I
could pull them tight, wrap & swaddle my baby.
