My husband just started with a new trucking company so he can be home on weekends. He just got his Semi but the guy who drove it before smoked cigars. The smell is nauseating. Neither of us smoke. I scrubbed the interior top to bottom and armoralled it but the smell is still there. The interior is mostly vinyl and I used the carpet shampooer to wash the seats and mattresses too. Does anyone have any suggestions to get rid of that smell?? Its awful and by the time he gets home all of his bedding, clothes, even he smells like cigar smoke. I'm pregnant and I can't even stand to give him a hug when he gets home til he takes a shower and changes his clothes. And he's been getting headaches from having to basically live in it. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!

What can I do next?

Try cutting some apples and leaving them in an open dish for a few days. For some reason that is suppose to absorb the smell. My husband bought a car that was used by a smoker and I think it helped. It takes a while but does eventually disappear. Also, try using Fabreez.

You could use Odo-Ban. It has a nice fresh scent. It is a cleaner and deodorizer...best of all it's biodegradable and not harmful to use around children or pets like some of todays cleaners...

Make a strong solution of it to wipe the seats down again (I know vinyl is a pain!) then use the spray bottle (that is ready to use)to freshen it.

You can find it at Sams Club for sure, and I believe Wal Mart and Kmart both sell it.

Good Luck!

pure essential oils work great diluted in various natural oils to wipe down the areas and also to keep on hand to inhale. peppermint and lavender are good, in the case of the importance of staying alert and awake while driving, Peppermint is the one! peppermint also takes care of nausea. be sure you get the REAL thing though as many products on the market that say they have some essential oil in them also have irritating chemicals and preservatives which counter act everything anyway. Health food stores or reputable smaller companies are the way to go to get the real thing.

I once forgot some hotdogs on the burner when I went out and they burned up to nothing. The entire house was full of the most awful smell and clouds of smoke everywhere. I had to stay in a hotel it was so bad. I rented an ozone machine (a-z rental in eden prarie) and in 4 hours of running it I had a new house! It got the smell out of the carpets, drapes everything! It smelled like a thunder storm had passed thru my family room. No srubbing or washing anything. The smell never returned. It was AWESOME. It was really cheap to rent and very much worth it. I bet it could take care of the problem really quickly. Good luck, let me know how it went!

I had my car detailed last summer and they said one thing that gets rid of most smells in cars is if you put a tire in there for a few days. I know it sounds weird but my husband left the windows down and it rained, I had an inch of standing water in the car and the tire got rid of the musty smell. They also said coffee grounds and charcoal works nice to. Good luck.

I would try an odor absorber you can find it at Walmart and sometimes at Target. It looks like little rock or salt stuff and it works quite well. My sister's closet had a mildew mold problem she cleaned it really well but her clothes were still smelly so she got one and it fixed the problem and didn't just mask it. Another product that I used in the day care was Odoban it can be used to freshen air and as a cleaner. It also has odor absorbing properties. Best of luck with getting the smell out and with your pregnancy.

Hi A.,

I would place some charcol briquettes around and under the seats. It will absorb the odors.
I had a house fire and it removed all the smells.

Hi A.,
Try some Febreeze and put a dryer sheet under the seats. If that doesn't help, call a car dealership and talk to one of their detailers and see what they use to get the smoke smell out of cars. Good luck :) C.

Hi A. -

I have found that Febreeze works wonders for stuff like that (saturate the fabric and let it air dry). . .if that doesn't work, try "Natures Miracle" you can buy it at any pet store - it takes out almost any smell. It's for pet urine etc - but I use it for any stubborn smells and it works great! Good luck - I can only imagine how sensitive you are to the smell - congrats on your pregnancy!

Buy a can of coffee grounds dump some out (unless you drink coffe of coarse) and place a peeled potato in the coffee and let it sit in the truck over a weekend with the windows up. It will absorb the smell.

I would say try a cup of fresh coffee beans and keep them on the dash next to the vents. I heard this works well. Good luck!

I am a smoker ( for 18 years now) and I have found that Febreeze works really good. I use it when I have my in laws over or my parents ( cause they don't smoke and my mom hates the smell) that or like a pet spray, they are normally very strong smelling so it takes whatever oder away. Good luck!! ( I was the same way when I was pregnant...couldn't stand the smell of smoke, so I do feel for you) :o)

A. -- I've had good luck with baking soda placed in all the ash trays. You could probably even sprinkle some on the seats and things, and then vaccuum it up later. We bought a used car that was owned by a smoker, it was AWFUL any time the windows were closed up for a while. Some mechanics suggested this to us. Hope one of these things works for you. A.
