Need Nice Smelling Car

I need an idea to help make my car smell better. There haven't been any accidents of any type, so I have no idea why it smells like dirty diapers. The car is relatively new- we only drink water in it and use non-spill sippies. My daughter has a knack for pooping while in her carseat, but it hasn't ever escaped the diaper, and her carseat doesn't smell. I've cleaned it out, wiped down the leather seats, dash, etc, but it still smells like poo. I would use Febreeze, but with the leather seats and all-weather mats, there isn't any fabric on which to spray. I've seen the car scent things, but I'd rather not use them since they're really strong and I don't want anyone breathing that stuff in on a concentrated basis. Help?

What can I do next?

My car has leather interior as well, spray the febreeze on the carpet (under the seats and floor mats) and the head liner.

Take a few dryer sheets and put them in random places in the car. Under the seat, under the floor mat, in the sun visor while it is in the closed position, in the trunk, inside that little pocket in the door, etc. This will do wonders for the "smell" situation

have you thought about an odor absorber/air deodorizer? Target sells one that is cheap - it's a clear plastic jar that has little gel looking beads in it and you unscrew the top to take the paper barrier out and screw the top back on - maybe try putting it in the car overnight to see if that works, if not you can try hiding it under your seat so it will still work...
Have you checked everywhere to make sure someone didn't leave a dirty diaper in the car (like it fell out of the diaper bag the or whatever)? Check the trunk, under the seats, behind the car seat, in the pockets behind the front seats, etc.? Anything can be anywhere with kids - LOL...
My DD is good for pooping in the car too, but our car doesn't smell like it...it would make me wonder if someone stepped in dog poop and tracked it onto a floor mat or the smallest part of carpet that shows...

The weather is getting nice, let it air out with the windows open for a few hours outside on a sunny breezy day. Sprinkle some baking soda on the carpet and then vacuum up later.

clean the carpets and upholstery. You never know what someone had on their shoes when they hopped in!! And if the car was used when you bought it, you don't know what someone else had in the car either.

The flooring under the mats is what? I bet you something probably did leak and you missed it. My kids were famous for getting things between the seat and the inside wall of the car. Even though I've had all weather mats too, the carpet under the mat is always cleaned and freshened.

We had a really awful smell in a van for a while and when we finally took the back seat out, we found dead frogs. They had crawled up under the car and found a way to get in under the carpet and had died right there and rotted. We took a pie plate, set it in the back and poured a bottle of vanilla in. Left it all day in the sun and over night. Next day the smell was gone. The car smelled nice.

You could spray the carpet in the car with Febreze and put a towel sprayed with Febreze under the car seat.... Not really sure what to suggest.

Have you taken the back seat out? There is a shallow area and it gets NASTY! When I owned a car, we tried doing it every year (just have to unbolt it, my husband does this) Anyhow you would not belive the things that we have found, don't think a diaper could get in there, but maybe something else?

Does your Husband, sweat a lot? Or work out and then while all sweaty, sits in the car to drive home? If so, then maybe, his sweat/wetness from the sweat, has gotten into the car upholstery?

This is an old trick and takes an afternoon to accomplish, and sunshine.
If it is possible, park the car in the sun with the doors open and leave it. Let it stay like this for as long as possible. The key is the sun and open air. No chemicals, nothing.
It works best in the sun, but the shade will work if that is all you have.
Not sure how, but it works every time.

If you are looking for a natural product, I would see sunshine-scents.org.

I had a new car back in 2004. I had to sell it because of the toxins released from the dashboard, etc. Not only did it smell, but I got sick. Could it be a strange new car smell?

FYI: The Environmental Working Group tested Febreze and found that it had over 80 air contaminants in it. The NRDC tested it, too. The conclusion ... This product is more dangerous than advertised.
- I call it "asthma in a bottle."

My friend opens a container of baking soda and leaves it in her car overnight.

Another friend found out that a few mice had gotten into her car. The mechanic found them . Boy, did it smell.

You can spray the febreeze directly into the air also. But spraying it on the carpet under the mats and seats is a great idea also.

Cleaning my car is a goal of the week for my spring break.

First just double check for rogue dirty diapers under seats :) Then maybe you could throw 1/2 a dryer sheet under one of the seats or all the way in back. I myself think they are too smelly and I use wool dryer balls with drops of essential oils on them...that works very well in the back of my van. Good Luck.

put dryer sheets under all the seats, including the car seat

I would honestly get some professional car cleaner for the inside of cars and go to town in this nice weather cleaning every surface in that thing.

You have probably already done this but dig under the seats ect, maybe a dirty diaper fell out of the trash and rolled under the seats.

Try putting a bowl of vinegar in the car overnight, I know that will absorb smoke odors. Just take it out in the morning and roll down the windows so the vinegar smell can escape.

Hey there. Not long ago we had that happened in our car because we forgot our back windows were slightly open when it rained. We tried a few things, however what does the trick is two things:
-one bowl of white vinegar left in the car for a couple of days or try
-an onion cut in two halves somewhere in the back of the car. It keeps away air Bourne bacteria and absorbs odors as well. It will also keep you and the kids healthy.

I hope it helps:)
