I just paid 35$ plus tip for a hair cut yesterday. Seeing as I only get my hair cut about every 6 months , I think it's not a bad deal.
How much do you pay for a haircut for yourself?
How often do you get your hair cut?
I stopped seeing my person when I started staying home because she was expensive. The girl I saw then - who charged MUCH less and did equally great job - has now stopped seeing clients and is teaching for a hair company. I have an appt. with my old person on Wednesday - who I still think is expensive, but I don't get my hair done that often so I MIGHT be able to justify it to myself?? (Hubby gets hair cut probably 4 times for my 1 and pays $10 each...so if you look at it that way, it is more justifiable...IMO)...
So, just curious... :-/ I HATE looking for new hair people...Do I splurge on someone I know does well with my hair or do I keep looking (and paying money) for someone who may or may not do it to my liking? :-)
TIA :-)
I feel SO much better! Thank you all!!!
I have VERY THICK, course/wavy hair (but not wavy enough to get the nice "beach look") and right now it hits at about my bra line. I can see going somewhere cheaper if I had easier hair to deal with (stick straight, not as thick, just "normal" more manageable) but I don't and I am quite picky. I tried Regis once and the girl asked me if I wanted it thinned and she literally cut chunks out of my hair and it was HORRIBLE! I am not about randomly trying new people...
After seeing what some of you spend, I am jealous of you who are able to make it work for $20, but am glad I am not paying more than I am! I am pregnant now so I won't be coloring any time soon! SO just need a cute cut to make up for fun colors! :-) Thanks again, All!!!

My hair lady charges $40, and for Northern CA, that's a bargain. I pay another $80 for highlights. I do this every 8 weeks. If it's one thing I refuse to skimp on, it's haircuts. I guess if I had more forgiving hair, I'd think about it, but my hair is baby-fine and light blond, so it shows every mistake. It's not worth it to go to Supercuts or wherever, in my opinion.
I pay $50 and it is worth every penny. Having it cut by the same person for 10 years. I can wash it, not even blow dry (been too hot) , brush n style it kind of and walk out the door and still looks great. A good cut can make or break how you feel.
I pay $20 and I get mine done about every 5 to 6 weeks - it's a shorter style, so it needs to be done that often to maintain it. There was a time I paid $38 for 1 particular person because she always did a great job, but then we moved out of state and I had to start over. Turns out for $20, I am still just as happy.
I don't consider taking care of my hair a splurge. I have long, straight, all 1 length hair that will not curl (think Pochahontas due to my Native American heritage).
I go every 8 weeks for a 1 step color to add depth, etc and a trim. I pay about $160 unless I try something different like low lights or something like that which adds about $40 to the bill. I also tip well.
It is worth it to me to have a quality person taking care of my hair.
I spend about $20 each time I get my hair cut. I am also not of the mindset that I need to have a perfect cut in order to be happy with my hair so I refuse to pay more. Also, whenever I have paid top dollar(for me)I've actually had negative experiences.
However, if you feel that going to your expensive, as you put it, stylist is worth it then do whatever makes you happy. I know in spite of going to inexpensive shops myself I only frequent the same one as finding stylists you like and/or can trust is not easy.
Before becoming a SAHM I paid about $125 every 2-3 months for a cut, highlight and style and that was 8+ years ago! Once I began to SAH I could no longer justify that expense so I found a different salon and was paying about $30-$35 per haircut - no more highlights =( The girl I was seeing there moved out of state so I was left finding a new stylist. My girlfriend who has great hair (long and stick straight) recommended I go to Great Clips and after much hesitation (my hair is not so great and very thin) I went into Great Clips for a haircut and was more than pleased! I loved my haircut just as much as I loved paying $14 (+$3 tip) =) I made note of the stylists name and when it's time to get a haircut I always call ahead and get her hours!
$20 for a cut at my salon
I'd pay up to $40 for a cut
I'm cheap. I see no need to waste $$ on haircuts.
Since my hair grows fast, I get cuts every 4-6 weeks. I use Great Clips & pay $14 + tip. I used to pay more & found that the quality was the same if I could lock-in with a good stylist at G.C. Now I check their work schedule before I drop in....don't want a newbie!
& for full disclosure: my hair is kept short, mega-layered, texturized, & with a low-key weight line. Lots of detailing. Not for the faint of heart stylist....& I still pay $14. :)
$85
I have very thick hair and it looks awful when someone does not know how to layer cut thick hair, so I spend the money because I've suffered through enough bad $50 hair cuts searching for a moderate priced stylist. Lord knows I've tried to do better than $85, but I just can't. I get my hair cut every 8 weeks which is about 6 x a year. I dread adding the cost and time of coloring to that, but I'm almost 40 and on my last pregnancy and its going to be time as soon as I come out of mom-of-new baby mode. Ouch its expensive! I don't consider a good cut a splurge. Its just what some of us have to do.
I usually pay about $120 including the tip for a cut and multi colored highlights. Last month I got my hair done and I got red and blonde highlights (it's naturally light brown). I do not go very often though. I have it done around every 3-4 months. I just can't afford to do it every 6 weeks like some people. I do save up for it. We use Dave Ramseys envelope system and as soon as I have enough saved, then I get to go and have it done.
ETA: I do my husband's haircuts with the buzzer thing and I give my son a mohawk with it. The lady who does my hair only charges me $10 to cut my daughters hair.
Depends a lot on your hair itself. It's easy for those who are saying "I won't pay much" but I wonder if they have hair that's naturally curly or wavy? Mine has big natural waves and they are not naturally great -- when my hair gets long it creates big swoops that stick straight out from my head in a way that can't be considered attractive! So I am very willing to pay for a pro who has done my hair many times and KNOWS exactly where it gets weird. I also have very stubborn gray that does not respond to all kinds of color and she knows what to use on me so I don't look totally gray and washed out. I pay her around $90 for cut and color, sometimes up to $120 depending on what else gets done. It's worth every penny. I do not get it done as often as it's needed because of time, not really because of cost.
If you are shopping for a new stylist, ask friends for someone who has experience with your type of hair -- if your hair is fine, you want someone who is good at handling that kind of hair; if curly, you want someone experienced with curly hair, etc. Don't be so polite that you don't ask questions in the salon! Every salon will say "we can handle any hair" but it's just not true.
When I was in high school, my wonderful mom found a stylist more than an hour away who was a "curly hair specialist" and took me there sometimes to make me feel better about my troublesome hair. I've always been grateful to my mom for spending the time and money to do that for a teen!
I spend about 75-100$ every 12 weeks. Depends on if I get a style after. Now when I color my hair it's about 250-275$
Just had my hair trimmed and both my kids last Friday. It cost us $40 and that was dry (no shampoo or styling). I perfer to get my hair cut without having it washed or styled after because I'm usually in a rush to get it done/get back to work/home/etc. So I think mine runs about $25 and $7.50 per kid. I started going to a local lady a few years ago because I was tired of walking into places like Great Clips and Fantastic Sams and having to wait 1/2-1 hour. She is very flexible and I often have to cancel/change my appt at the last minute due to work conflicts and she does not mind! I used to go every 12-14 weeks and also color my hair but after she told me time and time again, the only way to get my naturally fine hair in better shape was to cut it more often, I started going over 6-8 weeks. I have also stopped coloring my hair due to the cost and damage to my hair. It's amazing how much better it feels (being pregnant probably helps!).
I take my daughter usually 2x a year for a trim. Son gets hair cut by dad but I'll usually take him 2x a year for a nicer 'haircut' versus buzz cut that dad gives him. Hubby cuts his own at home.
I pay $35 and go about three times a year.
i had the same problem-then i discovered fantastic sams..got so sick of paying high prices n not getting what i want-so i let my hair grow out-12 inches i just got cut off-did a fabulous job..20.00...good luck..
I got my hair highlighted and cut in May, it cost me $135 including tip.
I've used people who are not so skilled, and it just doesn't work. When my hair is cut right, I can blow dry it and go - no need to spend time curling or straightening it. If it's not done right, it looks horrible until I get it cut correctly. So it's VERY worth it to me to spend the money. Just a cut is about $50-55. I am more than happy to pay it. Like the others, I get it done so less frequently than I did when the kids were not around.
I let go of the "I have to have a one-on-one relationship with my hair person" idea when an AVEDA school opened up close to my work. Hair cuts are $12 and colors start at $30. I can get a cut, color and eyebrow wax with a tip for less than what a color starts at at a salon. They have to learn somewhere, right? And, everything is done under the supervision of licensed cosmetology instructors. You are guaranteed. I've been going there for almost 3 years and only had to go back once to get my cut fixed. I'd recommend finding a school nearby and at least giving it a try.
It depends on the type of salon you go to. I have a girl (like yours lol) who did it for me at a salon then left and started her own business doing hair out of her home. I have been going to her for years now. It costs me about $35 for hair cut and blowdry style and that includes the tip. when she did it for me at the salon it was about $55 including tip. She just had a baby and I haven't had my hair done by her since mid june. I have been going to fantastic sams. it costs me $25 including tip for cut and style. but it is not as good. the person is great but the style is just not the same. if you have someone who does your hair and you love it stick with it.
I believe you get what you pay for in this case. There is a reason you pay more...they take their continuing education to a higher level and standard. I don't think you can put a limit if it makes you feel good about how you look. If you just go with a basic trim them pay $20, if you want a "style" them you'll pay more. I pay $65 for haircut and $99 for foils. I've tried others like you said and it is such a pain. Both know what I like and what I don't like...and when I need a change, how far to go! I do try to stretch it a little and try to take advantage of "bang trims" so I'm in about every 10-12 weeks.
Wash, cut and style, $45 plus 20% tip, every 12 weeks or so.
I get my bangs trimmed in between for $10.
Partial highlights twice a year run around $100 each time, including tip.
My husband also gets "cheap" haircuts but here it's at least $15 plus tip, and he goes at least once every six weeks, so I think it pretty much evens out in the end.
I go to what is considered a "master stylist." She charges $75 for a cut. But I was watching the ladies at this Asian salon that I take my daughter to. One in particular was very, very good. I started reading the Yelp reviews and her name came up often. I finally took the plunge and she cut my hair a few weeks ago. LOVE IT. Now, it's not a high-end salon like my master stylist's, but for one third of the price (yeah, $25!), I couldn't care less. Problem with my master stylist ... very hard to get into and goes on vacations often so I have to book so far out. I'll continue to have her do my color, but I just found me a new hair cutter :) And now I have a great excuse (you go on vacation too often, you're too hard to get into, I have to book so far ahead, blah blah blah)
So to answer your question, check out the Yelp reviews of stylists in your area. You just may find the right combo of excellent skills AND excellent price.
I pay between $12 and $15. The person I see when I do get my hair cut by someone else is pretty good. She leaves the top a bit too long though.
45 for a cut
I color my hair myself for 25 bucks through esalon
The kids are about 12 bucks at Fantastic Sams.
Just a cut? I pay $38.
Full highlights add about $75.
Partial highlights, add $45.
Plus tip, 20% of the bill, plus $2 to shampoo girl.
The most I've paid? $48 for a cut, $90 for highlights.
I try to get my hair cut about every 6-8 weeks.
Highlights about 3-4 times per year.
My cuts are $40, so $50 with a tip. I have really slacked off in recent years and have only been getting one or two cuts a year but I have a new role at work that requires a more polished look so I'll be going every 12 weeks or 4 times a year. Around here was I pay is the going rate for a newish stylist. The more experienced stylists get $50 and up per cut but I have a very basic long layers style that's pretty hard to mess up so to me it's not worth it to pay for someone better. If I had a shorter or more precise style or something difficult link very curly or thinning hair I'd pay more for expert-level care.
after years of having friends do it (or hacking away myself with nail clippers) i've finally found myself in a place where a) my hair needs to be cut regularly, like every couple of months and b) none of my talented friends are close enough to impose upon. so i found a TERRIFIC gal, and she only charges me $20 ($5 if it's just a bang trim.)
so i guess it depends on how much it impacts your budget. i know i'd keep looking if i had to pay $40 a pop, unless i had a particular style that few stylists could do to my liking.
ETA- omg, am in shock at how much most pay! i don't color mine any more, but i think my cut is faboo, and now i'm realizing how lucky i am! i gotta kiss ashley next time i go to her salon (23 years old and owns her own place!)

My haircut on Thursday was $85 plus tip, I cut it about every ten weeks.
My daughter had hers done yesterday and it was $60 plus tip....she has hair to her rear end and rarely cuts it.
I wouldn't risk someone who didn't do a great job....ughhh!

Just remembered this....took my dog to get groomed yesterday (ten pound mutt) and HE was $50 plus a nice tip because he is crazy!!!!
Wow, I just go to Great Clips a few times a year. I have long, straight hair and do not have to get it cut as often. I don't color so that is not an expense as of yet.
