I am really not sure on the rules regarding the tipping of hair stylists. I always thought that tipping was to supplement the lower wages paid to employees in the service industry. That might apply to some hair stylists who work for a salon and are paid a wage, but what about stylists who own their own salons or rent chairs in salons and set their own prices? If you are setting your own prices, aren't you charging what you want to be paid? Would you expect a tip on top of that? Is there a rule? Wouldn't having a repeat customer be the reward for good service in this case?
There are lots of people in the service industry who don't receive tips-employees in fast food restaurants for example-and they are often making the lowest wage of all the service industry.
For the stylists who set their own prices I sort of feel like the lower the price the bigger the tip should be. You give me a good deal, I appreciate it. You overcharge me I'll resent it.
The waitress at my favourite little restaurant won't let me tip her because she is also the owner and her husband is the cook.
I do tip my stylist, who happens to be the salon owner. She charges what I feel is a fair price, and I have been happy with her work. I just find the whole tipping thing to be confusing. I mean, if she wants more for her services, just charge more! I would rather everyone just pay employees a living wage and the whole tipping thing abolished.

My stylist is a young woman (friend of my daughter) who has opened her own one-woman shop. I always give her a nice tip because I can afford it and because she deserves it. I don't care if she owns her own shop. The extra money in her pocket is a reminder to her that I appreciate her and her work.
Many stylists who rent chairs in salons have to follow the salon's price lists.
I tip a minimum of 20% and have never heard of such a thing as not tipping the owner.
I don't think that workers in the fast food industry can be compared to a stylist. A stylist pays for their schooling and does continuing education to stay current on technique and style. They earn their wage and more, in my opinion.
My stylist has her own suite in a group of salons for hair, nail, massage.
I tip a minimum if 20%. She's badass good and it's worth it to me to tip 20% and plus.
I also am her model for several procedures and even tho those cost me 0, the upkeep is still 0 per her but I still give her a minimum of $20 when I walk in the door... Charge or no charge. You get what you pay for!! I pay well for great service.
Never tip the owner of salon.
They are providing a service and just like anyone in the services industry should be tipped for a job well done, anywhere from 15-20% depending on the job they do.
The tip is that I am a repeat customer...
My stylist owns her own salon and refuses tips. She does accepted Xmas presents, so I'll throw her is some money then-20 bucks.
It used to be that one did not tip the owner of a salon But I asked the stylist who now does my hair at her own salon if she accepted tips and she replied with an enthusiastic "Yes". I tip her 20%. The way I look at it is, if I didn't want to, I wouldn't have to. But I appreciate her service and she appreciates the tip. If either of us were not satisfied, I'm sure I'd be going somewhere else!
It's 15% for average service, 20% + is reserved for "I love my hair!!!" If the stylist owns the salon, I still tip only because if I can afford the owner, the price, a tip for my awesome hair is just part of the cost. Technically, it is true that the owner does necessarily get tipped. The employees have to rent their chairs so their cut is offset by that. Or if you choose not to tip the owner, buy some product! They make money off that too.
My stylist is the owner and sometimes his husband. Both do a really beautiful job with my hair, so to show them I'm pleased they get the same tip I would give someone else... I try to tip 20% since 13% around here is considered to be "generous." They pay their stylists competitively, and still are tipped very generously by most customers (I know many of their patrons).
Just because someone owns the salon and the salon is popular and doing well and may even be charging mid-range prices (I pay $45 for a cut) that doesn't mean they're making money hand over fist. They still have bills to pay regarding their home and child just like anyone else. They have bills to pay regarding the salon and they have to pay the salaries of their employees (they do NOT rent out their chairs and don't pay solely on commission).
What's nice, however, is that the rare time I've been caught with my pants down and not been able to tip (twice in nine years) my stylist has been understanding and so I tipped him double next time.
I've always tipped around 5 dollars for my cuts and 2.50 for my daughters. I get more done usually and her cuts are very simple.
20% and to waitstaff too. Unless they do a shitty job, then 15 %.
I will tell you what the owner of my salon told me. I needed to come in for a color and cut during my stylist's week of vacation. I had been traveling and couldn't come in before. He told me that he'd take care of me himself.
At the end of my appointment, he told me that as owner of the salon, patrons were not supposed to tip him. (I didn't bring this up -- he did.)
So you don't tip the owner. I do tip between 15 and 20%, depending on the amount of time spent on my hair and the job done.
My haircut costs $41, I always add $9 for tip to make it an even $50. My stylist is employed by the salon and he is fabulous!
Depends on what they are offering and how they serve me. At a salon I go to I only have my hair cut by the owner or colored by one of HER TOP girls. I went the Saturday after Christmas and had my hair cut. A Shampoo and cut w/ blow dry is $25-30. The owner is my friend and her daughter (who is licensed) was going to do my blow dry. But they found out I had a party to go to that night and decided to give me "loose curls" (think victoria secrect angel waves). Oh and my hair is down to almost my waist AFTER the cut. She didn't charge me for the style so I tipped her $15-20. I think my bill was $50 inc. tip that I signed for. If they are just doing the norm then yes I'll give a few bucks. But she did the work without charging me so I think a nice tip is worth it. (I am not sure what they normal charge for the "style" I received.) But I think you also get what you pay for. So if you normally tip them nice they will sneak in extra for you. Sometimes when I am getting a color (full highlights, which are pretty pricey) she will give a free deep conditioning or eyebrow wax or something.
My haircut is basically a "little boy's cut" so I negotiated a rate of $17 per cut (super short) every 5 weeks. I always tip 20%. Her usual rate for a women's cut is $35.
I always tip the same. If the cut is $18 I'd give them a $20 or maybe $22. If it was more then I'd likely not be going there.
I usually get a cut and highlights and it's about $100. I give her $10 for tip.
